Don't Choose Extinction - UNDP | United Nations | Jack Black | Climate Action

The world spends an astounding US$423 billion annually to subsidize fossil fuels for consumers - oil, electricity that is generated by the burning of other fossil fuels, gas, and coal. This is four times the amount being called for to help poor countries tackle the climate crisis, one of the sticking points ahead of the COP26 global climate conference next week, according to new UN Development Programme (UNDP) research.
The amount spent directly on these subsidies could pay for COVID-19 vaccinations for every person in the world, or pay for three times the annual amount needed to eradicate global extreme poverty. When indirect costs, including costs to the environment, are factored into these subsidies, the figure rises to almost US$6 trillion, according to data published recently by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Instead, UNDP’s analysis highlights that these funds, paid for by taxpayers, end up deepening inequality and impeding action on climate change.
The main contributor to the climate emergency is the energy sector which accounts for 73 percent of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil fuel subsidy reforms would contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and benefit human health and well-being, and they are a first step towards correctly pricing energy - one that reflects the ‘true’ and full cost of using fossil fuels to society and the environment.
But UNDP’s analysis shows that fossil fuel subsidy reforms can also be unfair and harmful for households and society if they are poorly designed. While fossil fuel subsidies tend to be an unequalising tool - as the lion’s share of the benefits concentrate among the rich - these subsidies also represent an important portion of poor peoples’ incomes that otherwise must be paid for energy consumption. Fossil fuel subsidies’ removal thus could easily become an income- and energy-impoverishing strategy. This contributes to making fossil fuels reform difficult, and imposes a key barrier to transitioning to clean and renewable energy sources.
The Don’t Choose Extinction campaign features a collective intelligence platform, the Global Mindpool, to help tackle the most important issues of our time. Linking insights from around the world - on the climate emergency, the crisis in nature and inequality - the Global Mindpool will support UNDP to better inform and equip policy makers in government, civil society, and the private sector.
For more information on the ‘Don’t Choose Extinction’ campaign, visit www.dontchooseextinction.com
UNDP is the leading United Nations organization fighting to end the injustice of poverty, inequality, and climate change. Working with our broad network of experts and partners in 170 countries, we help nations to build integrated, lasting solutions for people and planet.

I'll be honest - when talking about diplomats or even leaders of many nations, sometimes with various other problems, I wouldn't expect them to think about climate first. Actually, if a certain world leader would think about climate first, instead of, I don't know, well-being of his own people, then I would have bad opinion about him. And before you say ,,but it's going to be for better good for everyone, including their own citizens" - try telling that to a homeless man with wife and 4 children. Ask him, if he more cares about small fractions of procent of CO2 in the atmosphere, or having a house and job.

Reminds me of AOC when she changed her vote to pass that Israel Iron Dome 1 billion USD funding bill from "against" to "present" in tears after seeing the majority voted in favor of it. Politicians often just vote in their personal interest, or their party's interest for any specific matter. Makes me wonder what would happen if we had a type of society where every citizen could vote to pass laws/bills every week instead of letting a political party they might of might have not voted for decide for them.

UN has always been a loose confederation of the nations. Every nation has their own agendas so it's never going to be possible working collectively as a whole in general. Unless every other nation gets conquered by a single one, I don't think it'll ever be possible to make everyone work towards a common goal. While this might bring more order and make it more efficient progress for us, it could also backfire spectacularly. Imagine the fate of entire humanity in the hands of a few corrupt people with absolute power over anyone else.

To be fair to aviation though, they're trying to find a safe way that doesn't rely on fossil fuels, currently biofuel is the best way they've got while they find something better. That and they're not the biggest polluters, people cutting down on meat will have more of an impact than planes going green, making electric cars more affordable across the globe would have more of an impact. Think the only places planes pollute more than cars are where energy efficient or electric cars are popular and many people have them.

Sure, along with the chickens. We run away from the problems like a chicken. We are when it comes it as they say in my native languages "kiekes" who have "gen verstand van kiekes op een root te zette", however, anyone with a brain would realize that the end of the ice age, isn't the end of the world. Earth chan would still remain, even if we sucxefuly eradicate all lifeforms on this planet, it wouldn't mean that earth chan would simply just vanish. The thing is, we could try sending probes to Venus, study it, convert the 500 million year of climate change and use what we learned from global cooling upon our world. Not only would it help our world, nut give us an entire planet, around the same size as ours to colonnade, which has no complex lifeforms to look out for, has non of the problems might encounter on Mars, such as lower gravity, almost no atmosphere, solar radiation, less solar power this by being much further from the sun, being further from Earth, less opportunity launch windows and so on.,.

It wouldn’t hurt to change things so we deal with less fossil fuels, but people reap what they sew & smart people use more because it takes years of practice to provide what they do. They serve products that make life better. Don’t be fooled. The world governments simply want total control of the people & the economy we utilize. Provide value to the community. It’s not that hard. The governments are the ones just sitting around taking money. Industry & capitalism has kept our nation on top financially & in terms of production & trade for decades. Until now. Its more likely that we haven't found it yet than it is that it never existed. Its almost a certainty given the fact that it would've filled the gap of an additional necessary natural predator for the Velociraptor and other smaller species of Dinosaurs, since the larger predators almost never bothered with smaller prey. But speculation would put it at around 7-8ft tall when upright and built similarly to the Velociraptor. So, not too far off from the movie depictions aside from the lack of feathers.

Exactly. These are hypocrites. They are making decisions about hunger, education, human rights, while sitting in their posh offices, wearing posh suits. The resolutions they make can't even be passed without the permission of the ministers. Who, half of them, are corrupt. Where was the UN when taliban conquered Afghanistan? Hiding. And now they are focusing the attention from that to this. Pure Hypocrisy. Lol.

At least now it is everyone's mind , from which the world is suffering now. At least this Note was raised in such a beautiful manner before everyone. Think if we got ourselves and our government in the right place, spending not on useless items, at least we can bring a change. Right
