As a singer, I knew I wasn't supposed to clear my throat but I was never told why, so thanks for the reasoning behind why a singer or maybe almost anyone ought not clear their throat. Also, I am glad you mentioned warm tea for you throat. I was told warm liquids are good for singing and cold liquids aren't. Sometimes I have used hot sauce for limbering up my throat. Not super hot sauce but mild hot sauce. I think the peppers numb the throat and relax it. I don't know if it is actually a bad idea, but it was something I used to do when I was playing and singing in Dive Bars years ago. It seemed to work for me.
@nonchalantcrab348610 ай бұрын
This comment is very old, but just thought that I’d share that I have a tea that has chili flakes in it for this very reason. The creator of the tea made it for someone who is a voice actor, so they need to keep their voice healthy. I definitely think hot sauce works

Phlegm is usually caused by allergies or dehydration. If and when your going to sing it's best to hydrate the day before and have a room temperature bottle of water close to you when you sing. If it's do to allergies try a over the counter medicine that works for your body, this may take a few weeks to figure out.

Its never *moist* when its cold out. The cold air is incapeable of holding moisture like the hot. Your body is likely overproducing phlegm in cold to lubricate. -- Edit: also sinus drainage from mild infection/sickness and over lubrication seems to happen in the cold. I try to not write the paragraph long descriptions for at least 1% of my comments but all or nothing statements are often incorrect.

First time wathching your channel. I visited your website just now, went there to have a quick look. What catched my eye was: "I believe that no one needs to put limitations on their voice and decide for one genre. It’s all a matter of technique, and you can learn it!". This is a very important statement and I'm very happy to finally have found a "legit" vocal-teacher who supports the same thesis as I do ;) To me it made your teaching-offer completely credible and it makes you as a teacher most likable to me - for I suspect you to having really "explored" the voice. I think I'll search for some singing of yours - I'm curious now of how you might sound :) Thank you very much for your throat-clearing-advice! I will heed it ;) I hope I could explain well enough what my point was ... English is not my first language - so I apologize for possible mistakes ;) (I am a self-thaught-singer (and sideline teacher) from germany)

@lizb8534 жыл бұрын
After respiratory infections, what tends to happen is that whilst the original infection has cleared, it leaves your throat, vocal cords and vocal folds irritated and inflamed. There are 2 things you could try, 1) get a small empty plastic bottle and a drinking straw..Half fill the bottle with warm(NOT HOT) water.Then put in the straw, and gently on a count of 5 blow through the straw to make the water bubble, then gradually go up to 10 and so on. This actually massages the vocal cords and soothes the inflammation. The other thing ( probably better known anyway, are steam inhalation,followed immediately by a warm steamy drink, to moisturise the throat mot to mention replacing the fluid lost through breathing in steam. Lots of warm drinks will help anyway, at any time, BUT if in about week you're no better, you need to see a doctor or in the worst case scenario if eg you're preparing for a concert or whatever an ear nose and throat specialist. I teach singing for a living, and also have a medical background. That's how I know about this problem.
