Half hour documentary made in 1992 to mark the 20th anniversary of the sudden expulsion of approximately 80 000 South Asians from Uganda, a decision made by President Idi Amin. Many of the refugees settled in Leicester, with their family and friends, even though the City Council attempted to divert them by advertising in the Ugandan press with an infamous slogan: "Don't Come To Leicester". Twenty years later, they were and remain an essential part of the fabric of Leicester's society.
The film examines some of the historical, political, economic, cultural and personal factors in this tumultuous event, with archive footage and contemporary filming and interviews. Screened on BBC regional television.

What did Africans do in last 40 years. At least Indians kept the business and industry alive. The Ugandan economy suffered a lot after the Indians left.

It wouldn't have worked. During those heady days people were scared of the army thugs who went about beating, killing and harrasing the populace. Nobody knew what was going to happen next. For a thriving economy you need security and at that time there was none in that beautiful country. Later on the genocide in neighboring Rwanda and the wars in Congo and many more. If the Asians had not been allowed to leave, can there be any doubt that, under a monster like Amin, not a single one would have been left alive? Personally though, I find it shocking to see that people living in a country for many years STILL cannot or will not speak the language of that country. I know it's not fashionable, but I also think it would be interesting to see the impact on the established population of a place like Leicester of a massive influx over a short period of time. Both good and bad. How has the English culture survived, absorbed, changed. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be provocative. Culture is always shifting and changing and that's a good thing.

You have to blame the British! they created problems everywhere. In Malaysia, they did the same and Uganda and Kenya was no different. African people were totally marginalized in their own societies. In Malaysia and SE -Asia the Chinese took the economy into their own hands and later pushed out the Malays from the mainstream. These things do have consequences. However, having said that, we must acknowledge that migrants do work hard and at times outperform the locals due to sheer pressure.

Don't talk nonsense here. Malaysia has always been MALAY-centric. The PM has always been a Malay man, the Sultans and Agongs were all Malay men. For over 60 years, UMNO, a Malay-based party ruled the country and implemented the New Economic Policy in 1970 to increase the wealth and economic power of the Bumiputra. It is also written in the constitution that Malays will get special privileges. If despite all of this, Malays still couldn't catch up to the Chinese, then it's the fault of your leaders and your people. Don't blame the British or the 'pendatang'.
