Correction: The solar plexus isn't located under the sternum. It is a bundle of nerves on the front of the aorta in the top of the abdomen. It is indeed covered by muscle. The reason it is hurts is because..... well it's a dense bundle of nerves. This also means that if you make sure to tense up your abs when hit, it will mitigate the pain a lot. But yeah, a solar plexus shot will always hurt more than many other body shots (just like a liver or spleen shot will), so you should do you best to guard it.

MMA guys might poo poo things like nerve grips which have vastly varying degrees of success but this is exactly why even having a decent knowledge of anatomy as a martial artist is so important, obviously not crapping on Ramsey here because he makes very valid points but I do find it funny because it's like with the infamous akido style wrist grip and how precise you have to be as an example. Magically works in certain situations brilliantly well but then if you've got a person doing something different it's completely useless or they may simply know the mechanics of the technique and how to resist it. There was a moment I remember where one of my own instructors tried using a special kind of jab to the throat which does apparently sort of crumples a person when done correctly, the biology was sound. However one thing he did not expect at all because I'm predictably weird is the place he was aiming for wasn't in the place he was expecting which is a great example of anatomy knowledge at play and it's difficult even for really experienced people. This is exactly why I tend to favour the idea of joint locks and more reliable basic techniques over anything fancy. The fancy techniques do work but they're very very precise and also there's no accounting for surgery either because that moves specific body parts sometimes depending on what the surgeons have done. We all found it pretty funny because of course it's one of those things you just weren't expecting and I mean how could you? I didn't know a tiny portion of my throat wasn't in the usual place LOL.

@@RamseyDewey I should give it a shot in a prayer. I'm in this situation where you seek redemption of your past life that screwed you over. People that are unwilling to try out new things are symbols of that past nerdy life like they came from the dark past to pull me back in. I hate whoever settles on a sub par life, like, can't enjoy working, or can't understand women. In my case, most teammates only talk to me near deadlines, people avoid me more than they avoid bullies, I suck happiness away in conversations by accident, but it's hard to see yourself as a villain. What's clear is that there are goals and people push you in some direction.

I will never look at body-shots the same again after fighting a boxer in my second Taekwondo tournament. He was so damn strong and my liver was hit 3 times and my solar plexus twice. It left me with some trauma and every time I get hit with a bodyshot that hurts, I get flashbacks from that tournament, even though it's been 2 years since. Here's something I found interesting. I think I have watched you enough yrs lol. I was picking up Auto Parts at our Hub and there was a young man working Back with a car battery. When I came back around I Started telling others things for Strengthening his punching power for the top on a ground and pound here the part that surprised me: I started explaining to him as I would grab one leg for a single leg takedown and and explained a few variations on what he could do once he got the single leg and then I went and postured myself into him as I grabbed his double leg and explained why to grab at this spot and this spot etc. Now mind you I'm coming a Hip injury where I lost so much weight ie Fat around my Hip area, the my led ball slipped partially out of the Socket. Muscles weren't doing anything the Fat was stabilizing the Hip Joint. Lost 105 pounds so far. Anyway when I walked out to the truck I was like, I think I just channeled Ramsey Dewey 😅🎉 Rehabbing the Hip muscles. Got to makesure I don't re-injure it. My two cents on the 4-arm scenario: Your comments about the arms getting in the way are also true for people with the standard number of arms, yet we don’t try to pass the arms in the way we pass the guard. Part of this might be because we also have the same number of arms, so we can control them with our own, but I think that a bigger reason is that the mechanics and placement of the legs with respect to the body make them mechanically much different than the arms with respect to their role in positioning and movement (the direction they bend, their connection to the hips, etc.). This makes me think that maybe passing only the legs might be much more effective than you suggest (after all, it’s really passing the hips that we care about, right? and passing the legs is just a necessary step for that), though you’d still have to figure out how to deal with that extra set of arms…

As a person who practices Uechi-ryu karate which is known for its entire body conditioning, the area in the center of the body is best conditioned with Isometric and breathing excercises. The reason is because it actively teaches the person training to tighten the muscles in those area in a way that provides a form of solid "armor" to protect the midsection and internal organs that pushes outward. This is kind of like the pressure inside of a basketball or soccer ball. When direct force is applied from the outside the internal pressure springs back in a way that the ball is not taking direct damage. This starts as a concious act where the midsection muscles are tightened and eventually becomes an unconcious action by the person like any activity that you do for long periods of time. This same type of state of mind happens with most people when they are driving after years of experience. You go through the motions and may need to figure out where you are going, but you don't think of what is going on when you are actually driving, it just happens.

On top of having to pass the guard twice, the second guard would have a lot more limb dexterity. Once you pass the legs, you don't really have to worry about them coming back to bite you. But Goro's lower arms could grab you from behind. And good luck trying to arm bar them; they're thick as tree trunks. If there's anyone who could just not believe in BJJ and curl you like a dumbbell, it's Goro. But man, forget BJJ; Goro would be AMAZING at Muay Thai. Imagine what it'd be like to fight a dude who had separate pairs of arms for striking and clinching. He could clinch you with his upper arms and throw uppercuts to the body like knees, while maintaining his footing and balance.

Hey coach, gonna try to post a new question in hope that you might answer it: I think a major factor in how martial arts "lose their edge" is just how insular they become. Without a diversity of ideas and techniques to test against, they become stagnant and decline in effectiveness as they more or less just become optimized to "deal with themselves". What are your thoughts on this idea?
@dtibvgz8441
@dtibvgz8441 3 ай бұрын
Hello friend. Let me tell you about my thoughts on the topic. Which I'm sure is shared by many professional martial artists and managers - as I've watched a lot of videos where this was mentioned. To be pedantic (sorry, personal quirk) - Martial Arts are evolving and becoming better, we have guns and nukes - those are the way of the modern-day soldier. Unarmed martial arts on the other hand are what you are talking. Important - as due to that unarmed martial arts are not 'needed' they are currently practiced for fun by enthusiasts and as recreational activity. That's 99% out of the people practicing unarmed martial arts - while they can improve it and develop it in a way which you may deem as 'good' - once again - it is not needed and very few people will be interested, and they will lack a lot of things - you mentioned few of them. There probably are still some new, modern styles which probably will cover your interests - but in this day and age google is your best way to find them. Those who are highest level participants, very involved and are basically professionals in the field - they want it to be 'safe' and 'financially beneficial' - you should look at some sports which split into 'traditional' and 'sport' versions - Taekwon Do and Judo comes to mind for me. The traditional keeps a lot of elements which are dangerous while the sport gets 'watered down' to lower the number of possible injuries and increase the longevity of their participants - at least until they are performing under the spotlight. They don't want to be at fault, pay compensations and the like - they want to make money by advertising and sponsorship etc. - they also want it flashy and distinctive to not look like other sports or styles. As I see things - all three groups don't have as main objective to improve unarmed martial art and its efficiency as such - one group is happy to practice, the second (traditionalists) to keep it as it is and the professionals - to make it more profitable.

Well since you love fictional questions here's one. What would be an effective way of fighting for characters who can fly like Omni-man or Invincible (They're like superman but just with flight, super strength and super speed)? It seems like just punching as hard as possible isn't the best strategy since most of the energy in the strike just gets wasted making your opponent fly across the sky and that also forces you to chase him to get a second strike but if grappling is the case then doing while flying would be very different!!

Hey coach, I just have a question about sternum "injuries" from pressure on the ribcage. I heard at least pain around and under the sternum (and cracking) is common in BJJ, and I myself dealt with it now for 4 months (I tried to be a good sport when practising Van Flu chokes and finally had to tap out from pain in the chest after my partner couldnt get the blood choke for some time). Does one actually recover from this? At least the cracking seems to be here to stay. Related: I have a slightly inverted sternum without any physiological symptoms, but are people like me just destined to hurt their chest in BJJ? Any experience?

Are you saying okinwan body conditioning doesn't matter? My Isshinryu sensei could pass the Sanchin breaking test with okanawan bos broken over his solar plexus, forearms, and shins and thighs and stuff. I saw it with my own eyes. He didn't do that all the time, but he technically passed the 7th degree black belt test while he was still only a light green belt. the only way to hurt him was to hit him with a full-power thrust kick straight into a vital target, but in a real fight he'd never be dumb enough to get hit like that. All he needs to do is keep a good guard and step back and not get hit, etc. His stance was good. He kept his right elbow protecting liver and right hand chin high. Left elbow protecting solar plexus and left hand maybe cheek high. I never beat him sparring. He was a real 4th dan in okinawan karate. I did beat two of his 2nd Dan students in sparring sometimes, but never came close to beating Sensei Mark in stand-up. I was his demonstration partner for about 4 years in submissions class as well. I've calculated that when I was 20 years old, my thrust kick was pushing 3000ft-lbs, and sensei Mark could soak it if he wanted, or he could just rull with it and not take damage. I was a natural 185 fighter, he was a natural 235 or 245 figther. I circuit trained 20 hours per week back then, even though I don't look it now. I have been very sick since 2006.

Bhy the way, my standing guard was A++ when I was 20 years old. I could disarm other brown and black belts who were attacking me with melee weapons such as Escrima and Okinawan bos, etc. It even got TOO EASY to beat the other brown and black belts when they had weapons. In one case, I disarmed a 2nd Dan when he had double stick escrima attacking me, and I didn't even get hit. That was during my black belt testing.

@@RamseyDewey Yes, that's correct. Solar plexus is incredibly hard to train against a straight punch, much like the liver. That's why my sensei's standing guard covered the liver and solar plexus with his elbows, but still had chin high fists. Correct. It's about the only place on the body you can hurt a fully trained heavyweight. You may as well try to jack a heavyweight in the jaw or temple if you are ever in a fist fight with one, because most body blows aren't going to work unless you literally hit right on a vital target like the liver or solar plexus. You're correct.

@@RamseyDewey Anyway, against a heavyweight, if you are a smaller than heavyweight, your body shots should aim for these points: Solar Plexus Liver Kidneys Left armpit vs heart and left lung, perhaps right round kick or right hook, or slip a jab and straight punch here. Anywhere else and the guy will pretty much just laugh at your attack for body blows. And you NEED 2+ inches of penetration on those targets vs a heavyweight just to get past his muscle and ribs. You can't just punch/kick at the surface of his body, you need to strike THROUGH the body by 2 to 6 inches for it to even matter.
