Julia, you are exactly right! This IS a special ad hominem...namely a "poisoning the well," which is a sub-categorical logical fallacy of ad hominems. Guilt by association, harkening to an unrelated belief a person holds, etcetera fall under this sub-category. I would caution against over-applying this correction, however, as people often fall for the "fallacy fallacy" (the declaration that the conclusion or conclusions of an argument are wrong due to a logical fallacy or logical fallacies contained therein). Also, people may dismiss the legitimate pointing out of conflicts of interest or historic trends of a person that, while not logically necessitating that their conclusions are wrong, can statistically or practically give useful information about where the conclusion or conclusions came from; for example, pointing out Kevin Trudeau's criminal past of fraudulence and the unlikelihood that a convicted fraud would revolutionize several fields is perfectly legitimate. Finally, I would urge people to make sure that they do not mistake jokes and irony for actual attempted use of a logical fallacy! A person's status or profession adds a lot of credibility and weight to what they're saying. Those things should be taken into account. But people should not disregard someone's opinion because they don't have x degree. You don't need a sociology degree to have an opinion about sociology. You don't need an economics degree, or have a business, to have an opinion about economics.
