Excellent! I too frequently hold on tightly to beliefs to which I have an emotional attachment, and feel that criticisms of them are instead directed at me personally. I've been wanting to not feel that way for a long time. Thanks for this video. It's going to help guide me down a better path. I do find it ironic that you argue against treating argument as a competition, yet almost immediately introduce the idea that you are in a duel, which is itself a competitive activity (and often violent). ;) It did give me the idea that opposing arguments could instead be viewed as tools, some being better than others. Then, "losing an argument" could just mean that you are shown that your tool is flawed in some way, but also that the other tool is of higher quality, allowing you to go build better things, and helps reinforce the idea of argument being a collaborative endeavor. Anyway, thanks again. This was immensely helpful for me. :)

1. Divorce your belief from yourself - view belief as if it's existing a few feet away from you physically. - when your belief is being attacked, picture the attack being directed to the distanced belief, and not you. - this allows you to evaluate your beliefs objectively and fairly with no emotional attachment behind. 2. You are "collaborating" to figure out what's true. - a healthy argument is where both parties have no motive to win. 3. Visualize being wrong. - How would you cope? - How would this world look like if your belief was wrong? - Think about how you would react, get used to the idea of being wrong. - You'll be in a better frame of mind to more objectively consider the possibility that you're wrong. 4. Take the long view - When you concede to a point, you are putting credit in the bank in terms of your ability to convince others in the future. -Others will know that you aren't stubborn. 5. Congratulate yourself because you're objective, not because you're right - redirect the common impulse to validate your ego (When you win an argument you feel validated). - you could be right all along by arriving at the conclusion in a non-smart way. *If you tend to think of arguments as duels rather than "collaborations". - think of the duel as both you and your opponent have weapons, his/her weapons being stronger than yours, engage in an objective argument, and you'll be awarded your opponent's weapon (ideas successfully conveyed and received). *if you feel defensive over an argument, put the same words into a person you're comfortable with, you'll find that the argument sounds more fair now. Correct me if I've misunderstood, have a nice day !

I really love the litanies of Tarski and Gendlin. Their recitation is an almost ritualistic way to focus before approaching information, a comfortable alternative for those who miss the structure inherent in religion. What is true is already so. Owning up to it doesn't make it worse. Not being open about it doesn't make it go away. And because it's true, it is what is there to be interacted with. Anything untrue isn't there to be lived. People can stand what is true, for they are already enduring it. -Eugene Gendlin

This great. Some people say "the truth hurts". But no, the truth is already there, just believing it won't to any additional damage. Except to your false beliefs, but you want to get rid of those anyways. Open your mind, it isn't so bad. You won't lose anything valuable, and afterwards you will be better of.

Some people call their opinions "values" because people's values can't be publicly criticized or called into question. If someone does "attack" another person's values, there are pretty severe social consequences that usually far outweigh the offense. It amazes me how in our modern society, many people feel and act as though they have a right not to be offended by anything they see or hear that challenges their "values"; Which is a real democracy killer.
@cube2fox

Thanks for saying something clearly which I had merely unclearly in the back of my mind. Another aspect of the topic: There are some philosophers who do not do moral philosophy but think that ethics presupposes the existence of mysterious platonic objects called "values". That's about as sensible as to assume that working mathematicians presuppose a platonic realm of numbers in their work.

Good video. I mostly use the third option and think having a good imagination helps a lot. For some reason I just enjoy the process or argument and gaining a better understanding of things. Not sure how to explain why or how to make others feel the same way but that might just explain why it comes more naturally to some people.

Amazing insights. I am currently doing a counselling course and every tutor on my journey talks of being free from personal bias. However most of these tutors delude themselves and fall for cognitive bias and also they cling to their favourite therapy. Good tips. The first one about imagining a spatial remove is news to me; I'm sure it's more effective than many might imagine. Regarding 'winning' an argument: if the other party has something to offer (as they usually do), which you reject by pounding them into submission, then that's something you don't have that you otherwise might - looks like losing to me.
