@@caitlinb Calm down. I have a play list, so I can be inspired. I don’t need to ask a content creator how to fix my own problems of my own making, and then expect a you tuber to do an entire video based on stupidity. As if they have time to respond to people like you. You’ve answered your own questions. If you need to warm up cool toned greys, just use warmer colours to either paint over the grey, or add warm colours to your decor. If you have an all white kitchen, add a splash of colour by using a bowl, a vase with flowers, a pot plant in a coloured pot, hang up a colourful painting...the list is endless, just use your imagination. If you want to modernise boho, get rid of anything that is quintessentially boho (such as macrame, pompous grass, wicker, basket, or rattan items, too many over grown plants) etc. Tone it down and just have a few decorative items. Keep the colour palette more basic, like three colours instead of the whole rainbow. Use your brain, instead of needing to have others think for you. Thank me later, when you’ve actually fixed your own problems.

I have that ugly organic tile and I'm gonna replace it with subway tile. The beauty of subway tile is that it's classic and will last you 10-20 years without you getting tired of it. I can't say the same for other unique styles.

The organic tile may look good but harder to keep clean because subway tiles are flush and can be wiped over seamlessly while the organic needs a tile by tile clean. Not fun.

As a architect I can definitely say that I love ceramic mosaic type of tiles. Subway tiles are fine if placed in horizontal/vertical grid and also colour of the grout does really matter... white tiles and black grout are too overwhelming.

I know subway tiles aren't the most unique but they came back in style in a big way for a reason: 1. They are cheap 2. They are versatile enough you can design around them without them taking over the look 3. They are inoffensive which means good for re-sale Trends are meant for easily replaceable aspects of your design. The bones should be classic.

Since I live in Central America it is super easy to have furniture made and fairly inexpensive. Mainstream stuff is either not available or super expensive here. I have had my couch reupholstered 3 times. And also my dining chairs. I generally use blackstrap loom woven fabric. Love your do dos.

I agree that Subway tile is overdone, but only because right now, we are going through a little bit of a classic revival. On the other hand, although the ceramic handmade tile is more unique and earthy (which is in line with the current trends) I think in 5 years and even less, the handmade tile will look tacky whilst the subway will remain a classic forever.

ceramic tile is usually more high-quality, while subway is more mass produced...think the natural, gorgeous type of ceramic zellige clé or fireclay makes...quality is timeless IMO

I feel like people gravitate toward subway tiles because they are one of the more timeless tiles. I think I captured the best of both worlds in my kitchen with a white organic shaped subway tile, each piece is kind of wavy and interesting but also still feels classic. I definitely do love your “do do” option though, it’s a breath of fresh air.

@@readthewarnings True! A lot of authentic pieces are straight-legged as well, though. I think the reason diagonal legs are getting tired is because they are used as a shortcut to an MCM vibe by a lot of cheap and over-done fast furniture items. Like almost a college apartment or generic youtuber feel (desks, for example, come to mind). The authentic pieces are still beautiful and stand out from the copies, but since the diagonal legs are everywhere, it is nice to get that MCM style without only having diagonal legs everywhere.

@@MeanderingMeagan4 totally agree, like the examples she showed are really awful looking especially when they are mass produced but if you go antiquing you’ll see so many cool interesting leg shapes and designs. And there are many straight legged mcm pieces but they are different than modern designs, they tend to be more tapered which looks really cool. I also think the mixing of both diagonal and straight legs looks very nice! If mcm or retro isn’t someone’s style that’s fine, but we live in an age where there are soo many styles to choose from that you can really choose anything you like! I love the resurrection of mcm especially bc many of these videos she’s made she has talked about the awful painting over beautiful mcm furniture, so I’m happy more people are loving the style. I just really like the retro “space age” look:)

Also, I love brass and I wish I could incorporate a touch of it in my kitchen but I know it wouldn’t look great in my particular space. I was shopping with my husband recently, and the saleslady said "this is what everyone is buying right now". My husband said, "Don't tell her that, or she won't want it". I just don't want the same thing everyone else has. I don't want a formulaic look. I don't want to walk into every one of my friends homes, and see identical decor. I think decor should be unique, like each person who lives there. I think you are trying to get people to do that. I really do think some people can only follow formulas though. They buy all new matching furniture in a set, and they are perfectly happy. I die inside a little when I see it.....but since I get to leave, I let it go, and just appreciate how much I love my own space, with my own stuff. Great video, again!

The biggest Don't for me is Don't Ever Ever go all out on something that's super trendy in the moment because guaranteed it will be basic in 3-5 years. For now it's that beige and white soft boho vibe with the cloud couch, sconces, and oil paintings. Or the kitchen with all open shelves. I love it and it looks cute now but it's so oversaturated and overdone. It's always better to go for things that are a bit different even if not the trendiest for the moment.

Re buying used upholstered furniture, especially if you have allergies: the fabric and cushion foam/down can be full of pet dander, smoke, human sweat and body odor, old food and stains. Cleaning will not remove these things that are imbedded into the cushions.

I’m a big MCM aficionado and I didn’t realize it before you mentioned it, but I don’t like angled furniture legs either! Looking around my house, all the MCM legs are straight. I’m not a fan of atomic design (I prefer Danish Modern) so it makes sense. Angled legs do seem retro and Jetsons. And I completely agree with subway tile. Done to death. I think Paige doesn’t like diagonal legs because they look less “orderly.” My kitchen designer cannot stand an upper corner cabinet with a diagonal door for the same reason. She says when she comes in the room and looks down that line of cabs, the diagonal cabinet “is jarring” and I kind of agree. Diagonal legs is kind of the same thing. I think they look like the brooms in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. They look like they’re going to run off!

I think it comes down to feng shui - the art of design - where they tell you that you need to feel very relaxed. Anything sharp or protruding is extremely bad feng shui so hence diagonals and chevron are considered bad and will 'attract bad luck'. They say this is like sitting in front of someone pointing a knife at you - uncomfortable feeling.

*On Point Tips* . Paige, I agree 100% on the gallery wall using larger scale pieces. I finally got the *WOW* factor when I switched to larger and fewer pieces. I yawn at subway tile. On brass *vomit* , in the 90's I had brass and glass living room pieces, I grew tired of it very quickly. I warm-toned brass detail here and there adds a bit of warmth.

Love the hand cut (or hand cut dupe) tile you showed as an alternative to subway tile and agree there are lots of different ways to install subway tile to give it a fresh look. Also, there are so many beautiful tile options available at all price points that it's a shame not to give other tiles consideration. That said, subway tile isn't going anywhere, it's a classic and will stand the test of time. I am an interior designer and I know most designers want the white kitchen & subway tile to go away but mostly that's just because they/we are tired of doing the same look over and over again. ;-)

Agree on the subway tile. I would like to say good bye to the pale all gray palette in every single renovation since 2012. I love a deep rich charcoal Gray and a nice Heather Gray | and those gray accents but the entire house of grays...please, for the love of baby Jesus swaddled in his fine lines, can we shtaaahhhpp it. ❤️ I love the diagonal leg but also love the straight lines-I love your style. I feel your pain on mid-century side legs and brass everywhere. Or halogen lights. Ugh. I disagree with stackable subway tiles. I don't think so LOL. To me, it looks very retro and hence ugly. (my personal pet peeve is mid-century style and furniture - I grew up in 70s and 80s and that I remember as uncomfortable and ugly furniture and it will never, ever make in my home). I also think that all white kitchen look nice. I also love marble. Not everywhere, but appliques, e.g. countertop. I wanted to do black marble on white kitchen (or green kitchen) but my people didn't approve saying all has to be white. Also that room has no light so all white makes sense. Oh velvet! Velvet is one of the best materials! I get that cheap, sythetic stuff that Wayfair calls velvet is not the same, but if you can run your hand over it and it feels like fur, you have high quality velvet that will last. Not sure if used furniture is the best way to go. I think the best way is not to buy with trends and rather save and buy higher quality pieces. And having said all of this, I like your strong opinions on things. I'm so tired of people not having an opinion.

I feel like I'm the only person that hates curtains hung way higher than the window. When I see curtains hung like that all I can see is the weird wall gap. For sure agree on the subway tile when it comes to recently remodeled standard kitchens, though. White subway tile with white or blue grey cabinets, marble, and brass is so boring.

I agree. There are so many tile options. But subway tile is classic and will never get old for me. Plus, it comes in an array of colors. I hate white subway tile with dark grouting, though.

I agree with what you said about gallery walls. Most YT designers say a space or vignette should look deliberate. I think the opposite. We should break rules, only go with trendy objects we absolutely love, and trust our gut. Don’t be afraid to be yourself. I think the best spaces have an element of haphazardness.

Just a small tip: frames should be 2.5 inches apart that way they look the most "pleasing" to the eye. Edit: it can be more than 2.5 inches but that is usually the standard, avoid placing them closer to each other because it will look weird.

I’m with you on the straight leg furniture! I never liked diagonal legs. I mix and match eras. And I have some mix metals (but mostly brushed gold) in my kitchen. I have white kitchen cabinets with a vintage looking green kitchen island and white quartz countertops with black and grey veining. I’d say we have similar style! Thanks for the great videos! Would love if you did a video about couches. I’m having a hard time figure out couches and accent chairs for my uniquely shaped living space.

I agree to everything you said! The tile you proposed instead of subway tile is BEAUTIFUL and thank you for bringing that option to my attention. We currently live in a condo and it if we are lucky we'd like to move to a townhouse or SFH in the somewhat near future so if we are able to redo our outdated kitchen we still might do subway tile just for a cost thing and the fact we don't plan on living here for years and years and years (I dont mid subway tiles and used to like them a lot...now I find them a little underwhelming); but if those tiles become cheaper like you mentioned I would much prefer that! Also agree on the straight mid century legs vs angled. when we first started buying things for our house I bought a vanity which I still love lucky from west elm (its the oval one with a marble top) it has angled legs but I still find it tasteful, and fits in well w/ other decor...but when I stared looking for a dresser and nightstands I purposefully avoided the angled legs because I agree it looks more costume(y) if decor could be costume(y). I don't mind a piece or two with those angled legs but it depends HOW angled and I too prefer a straight leg. I dont want to feel like I'm living on a set...which plays into your point about mixing eras, styles etc. I've always tried to do this, it's def a better look.

in 2019 I redid my family's house (the entire house needed updating, the bathroom wall crumbled) it was built in the 50's and not much had been done since the 70's so it was time. In the kitchen, I did subway tiles but they were clear, they do have a white background but the clear thing looked better with the rest of the kitchen and behind the stove, I did a complimenting tile, smaller rectangles that were white, clear, and silver metal. it looks pretty cool. I did a quartz countertop, it's white with grey sparkle but also had a little bit of a mirror chip so it sparkles and brings out the silver in the accent tile. I know grey is out but it just looks so pretty. it was a huge upgrade from the 1970s harvest gold tile that was there. I also didn't want to put tile with too much texture. Where I live we have the Tuscan kind of tile, it's very porous and I feel like it absorbs grease so much and I didn't want that for my family's kitchen since we planned to rent it out and I wanted something that was easy to keep clean. The renters love the kitchen. Mostly because I think they knew what it looked like before haha. - I also don't like the angled legs. I'm older than you and I grew up with mid-century everything and I'm not a fan, the straight legs do look slightly more modern.

Another thing with buying used furniture... look for a nice frame (often vintage/antique furniture). You can buy upholstery fabric, and have an upholsterer redo it. End up spending the same amount on a nice frame and upholstery, as you would a cheap one of Wayfair.
