The right time is so important. I blew a tournament because i was prefishing after work( i work midnights) and arrived at the lake around 10am. I found good fish and marked it as a starting spot. Day of the tournament we started there, 6am, and had nothing. A friend hit that spot around 11 and put 5 nice ones in the box.

Congrats on the recent win. In a couple of weeks I'm scheduled to fish an upper Midwest lake that has a significant amount of wild rice. While I'm assuming I'll be flipping jigs I was wondering if you had any tips on fishing on or around rice. Any thoughts are welcomed!

About 1/3 of the tournaments I fish are on tidal water. Timing is everything on tidal water. Other than that I like to be very flexible and seldom know what I’m going to do after my first stop.

I have outfished quite a few Trackers & Rangers with my 12ft jonboat for just those reasons. I don't have the luxury of gassing from one spot to another, so basically I pretty much have my line in the water most of the time.

Thanks for the great tips as always Matt! Hopefully you’re getting your utility patent going, I’ve seen a video or two of a big company prototyping a “hover hook”. Core Tackle will be the only place I order mine from

Here lately the fish are in like feeding pods, you will find some here, and in some in other places. There is a lot of shade on the river!

Early in my fishing I was the guy that made a beeline to the hot spots. Big mistake if you want to keep the spots for yourself. Time of day as well as season is important but I don't go directly to a given spot. There be buzzards watching you for a good spot. I may start a 100 or 200 yards away and work into the area. Yeah I call them buzzards!! Because they'll circle and wait, fish to it and past it. Don't telegraph your spots. Matt, I've been seeing more and more sites doing evaluations on the hover rig, must be on fire about now!

agreed! I hope more keep reviewing the hover rig!

Matt, can you tell us how soon will bass be ready to bite after being caught and released uninjured. We boated over 1000 here by Wisconsin Rapids since May and new fish move in but I don’t know if the previous bass are catchable now. Any thoughts are appreciated. Great video!

Don't be the guy with old kinky line, dirty reels, and constantly snagged up. Maintain your equipment and practice, practice, and practice some more until you don't have to think about it. At that time, you will be able to apply Matt's advice effectively. 😊

This just goes to show why you really can't be somebody who fishes one style these days. You really have to be adaptable and versatile and ready to fish offshore if there's an offshore bite or fish up shallow if there's a shallow bite etc. Every tournament is going to be different and you have to be ready to adapt to anything essentially.

I'll be honest, that entire mentality of saving bass for the next day never really made sense to me. The weights are cumulative, day 1 weights still count on day 2, so catch everything you can as fast as you can. Somebody might come and get those fish before you get chance, and that actually happens a lot when anglers are sight fishing beds. If I can catch a ton of good fish today, then I don't need to catch as many tomorrow, plus I know I already got the good fish I wanted to weigh in. I know this is backwards from what pro anglers do and it's probably the wrong way to look at things. But that's just how my mind works.

If a 4 pounder is a big fish on a lake. And you already have 5 fish in that class. Your going to have a really hard time upgrading from there. Your probably better off saving the rest fir the next day.
@MattStefanFishing
@MattStefanFishing Жыл бұрын
its not always the right move, but if you have a good limit and cant upgrade much more no reason to ruin fish for the next day
