I used to work at Panera and had to make it very clear to customers that asked about the lemonade that they’re very high in caffeine, and that it’s not safe to give it to their little ones. It’s labeled in the machines and everything. My condolences to the family and I am truly sorry for their loss.

Panera is very good about company wide changes and protocols, our bubblers were labeled too, the warning is actually included on the label for the drink itself inside when you get them yourself. We also had to warn about the high caffeine content to people who asked. I am in no way defending this because lord should lemonade not contain that much caffeine, I literally could never drink them and went for Dr. Pepper every time I drank something instead, but the chain is very prideful on keeping things consistent and I wanted to make it known!

The amount of caffeine a normal person can have in one sitting without having serious health problems is 400 mg. On top of that, they don't do a good job displaying how much caffeine is in the drink, and since it's bright and colorful, any child could easily order it thinking it was just a normal lemonade and die. Panera purposefully created a lemonade that could put someone in the hospital.

@@Wings_of_Genshin its more clear than on energy drinks and typically the sign is what people look at to see the drink, I believe it’s more so the fact that the mg count and effects of caffeine aren’t widely known, taught or advertised properly and that has more to do with company’s, government regulations, ect., also, theyre advertised as charged lemonade compared to the one normal lemonade that doesnt have the different colors or the highlighted ‘charged lemonade’. What happened was not okay and there should be regulations for caffeine. Nobody needs to ingest that much caffeine, even for a perfectly healthy person that much caffeine can be damaging to health. Caffeine also has addictive like properties, its not proven to be addictive but it does create a tolerance to itself causing for people to ingest more caffeine, has withdrawal effects and it attacks adenosine receptors in the brain (they create the feeling of tiredness) and in defense more are created leading to becoming tired more easily and requiring more. Caffeine is typically fine in moderation as its in a lot of things, but it’s still dangerous and there needs to be more awareness around it.

If it's guarana caffeine it's stronger than coffee caffeine. I use guarana caffeine. 220-300mgs of guarana caffeine give me a boost unlike coffee caffeine of the same dosage. Different types of caffeine give different effects as some are more effective immediately, while some are more effective long term. For example, guarana caffeine is really effective for the first half an hour, and then about halves in potency after that, but that half potency left will give you a mini boost for a while

Sadly everyone in the comments is making awful assumptions. Edit: i’m pretty sure the video by food theory mentions that Panera changed the labels of their “charged drink” because of complaints. I believe they actually enlarged the caffeine count as originally it was tiny. A while back people were literally making videos about how dangerous this amount of caffeine is and how someone could get hurt in the future because of the weird marketing. TLDR; bottom line is: you should never have to worry about literally dying from purchasing a single drink from a restaurant.

It clearly shows on the dispensers, in this very video, that there is caffeine and how much caffeine there is per two different sizes of cups. Admittedly, as a normal consumer I didn't take much note of it the first few times I got it - but I don't have any diet-related health issues and I only use a little bit in the tea (which I expect to have caffeine anyways) for extra flavor. For anyone who knows they need to watch what they consume, Panera made it a lot more accessible to check than a lot of other place.

She herself was fully aware that she couldn't have caffiene. Restaurants are not obligated to tend to every medical need - That is the responsibility of the consumer. For example, someone with liver failure should know damn well not to drink alcohol, and a person with a nut allergy should know what products have nuts, and to check if unsure.

I honestly have been saying that these are gonna to really hurt people since they came out. When they first came out like 2 years ago, I got one. I’m sensitive, but I was just focused on the meeting I was in and didn’t pay attention to the labels like I normally do and I honestly trusted Panera to have healthier options. I had to pull over on my drive home because I was shaking uncontrollably, and my heart had an abnormal rhythm.. I felt like I was losing consciousness. I have bilateral pulmonic stenosis which in short is a heart condition including stints… I am so unbelievably thankful that my boyfriend saw the details about the lemonade and told me about it before I had ordered it and drank it. I’m normally fine with energy drinks now but it still takes me 2 days to finish 1 can. So I can’t even tell u how upset I was to know that this drink could’ve potentially killed me if my boyfriend wasn’t so obsessed with the contents of everything he drinks. I love Panera but they need to do better. It is very simple for a person to avoid any unwanted health consequences. Her passing is very sad but I feel the company is being over burdened as the company did take precautions having the caffeine contents clearly visible on the dispenser along with calling it “charged”. Along with that, someone with high risk to caffeine should be extremely cautious especially when caffeine contents are labeled within three feet of your face. I remember when I was working at panera and the new drinks came out, i was telling customers with children who wanted the drink that the charged lemonades had more caffeine than a redbull (which we aren't told to do). While the signs on the drinks do let the customers know how much caffiene is in it, it still isn't marketed properly, which makes it understandable that most people don't understand. I've had to let many elderly know because i was worried, and since we aren't required to tell the customers unless they ask, it is understandable why this kind of thing would happen.

I’m sort of split on the topic. I work at Panera and yeah the Lemonade (the charger sips not the regular) have a ton of caffeine in it. We do have warnings on the bubblers, and the advertising claims to have as much caffeine as our Dark Roast. However, many people are unaware of this fact including mothers who almost give these drinks to their children. We would have to speak up in the matter to remind these mothers the drink has caffeine. I think the problem was not a lack of warning labels, but blending the warning labels into the background. The caffeine label looks like it’s apart of the ingredients list. Personally I think both parties are at fault, while the death of someone so young is horrible, she was an adult who if she had a serious health condition, she should have looked into the nutritional value some more.

it aint her fault at all, she had no idea that the lemonade was that caffinated, plus theres only a very fine print at the bottom saying its caffinated, anyone can look at the lemonade and think its a normal drink. How dare you critize someone who just lost their life to company stupitiy.
