The best video on this topic I've ever seen, thanks for the content and your humor, big Z!!! Until I accidentally stumbled upon your channel, I couldn't even sit for 10 minutes without pain. Now I feel like an almost healthy person!

I wish I had this content back in 2006. I'd just started working and was in a ton of mid back pain. Physios/online advised me of "good posture". I jammed a foam roller into my low back and tipped my hips into APT which made everything much worse until I found you/hartman/PRI in 2021! My tip - bias gravity for comfort. Recline slightly so you're not fighting gravity all day. I work from an ikea arm chair with a wireless keyboard/trackpad and a TV - much comfier & I switch to a sitting/standing desk for more active postures

Sir Your videos are as good quality as the youtubers who have 1-13 milion subscribers if not even better. You have the light on videos, it's short, funny, entertaining to watch,there are time stamples, You show exaples of exercices on yourself wich is all a big +. I don't know if it is a new chanel but if it is, it will blow up quickly. Good luck to you Sir.

I feel so much better about my sitting habits at my desk job. I kept thinking "I really need to sit with better posture" but I can't help but fidget and change positions throughout the day. Sounds like I did myself a service by not forcing myself to sit in static "good" posture.

What about yogis who sit for hours in the same position back stright? If the yoga challenge would be to sit for two hours and to feel that you could keep going without any discomfort afterward, what if our back muscles are just weak? This weakness could cause problems for someone who is brand new to cross-legged sitting. It might put a heavy strain on their back since they have used so few muscles. Imagine you are Neo from The Matrix and have just been taken out of the Matrix. Now you have muscles you have never used before. Just a thought. Also people are really used to leaning towards chair or something so not using the muscles.

Sitting in lotus or legs extended on the floor feels great on my back, but it's hard on my knees if I don't move often. Still better than back pain though!

Get a small to medium sized foam ball to toss in the air and play catch with yourself. It's watching this video I realize no matter how long I can sit, I'm never still, I can't do it never could. These days when I'm mindful of it I do push ups or squats because they don't cost anything. Gives me a pump, a stretch, and a squeeze like a mini reset on the machine. I was sitting now I'm vascular. I suggest playing catch because a lot of people don't have good or any hand/eye coordination (except gamers), so they'll really be moving about to catch that ball, especially early on. Foam because when you miss it you don't want it breaking something plus you'll get a good grip on it, bounce is overrated. Soft or light enough to not do damage or at best not tip over whatever you drink out of. If you have a roller chair, even better.

hi zac, i see you are sitting on a herman miller aeron chair. I've tried that chair but had to return it because as you've said in this video, i tend to be stuck in that chair for too long and my back and neck just kills me. what do you think of chairs like the hag capisco where the design philosophy behind it is to switch sitting posture every couple minutes? have you tried such chairs and could you recommend any? thanks.

I've been practising what's known as Zhan Zhuang from Qigong, which is essentially just standing still like a tree. This has reduced tension in my body drastically, which is strange given what you mentioned about staying still being linked with more tension
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
You may be able to relax well in that position. Also If standing there is more normal sway that occurs compared to sitting
@paul-ie Жыл бұрын
I'd also be curious to know if sitting in meditation posture is something that actually reduces tension too. The idea is that your body learns to hold this position using the least amount of effort necessary, so tension decreases Edit: I mean in the long term, obviously anyone who's sat for more than 30mins knows tension increases
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
@@paul-ie Perhaps. There's also the act of meditation, which is relaxing

I have one. Was going to talk about it but ended up cutting that portion. It does burn more calories than just standing. I can’t do deep work on it though. Better for answering emails and such. It doesn’t best walking outside because of the visual piece, but works if you can leave the office

But wait, I thought you said it should be an active posture, but the activity leads to stiffness?
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
The act of sitting produces increased stiffness to hold a position. The recommendations here are to try and offset that by throwing in movement wherever possible and using other strategies to counteract that. Hopefully that clarifies
@paul-ie Жыл бұрын
@@ZacCupplesPT it was a bad joke sorry, but thanks for clarification 🙏 I think also breathing is a huge factor eg if really focusing hard, the breath gets shallow and can stay shallow. There are yogis who can sit for many many hours very comfortably
