Couldn't agree with you more. Been searching for this info a very long time. I have breathing issues do to severe lung damage I suffered about 20 years ago and have been searching for optimal breathing information. I do the buteyko method to manage episodes; and it does indeed help; but it is not a normal way to breathe. All the belly breathing stuff just messes me up and makes my body freak out. I am loving this. 💜

100% I've watched hundreds of videos and I think of myself as someone who knows alot but have struggled with my diaphragm forever. I bought the O2 Trainer and that led me here. The guy who invented the O2 trainer doesn't use an inhaler anymore. His teaching isn't great because exaling completely with his method is fast and for me at least it didn't work until I modified it to a slower exhale. I might still be doing that wrong but this video addressed the lower abdomen technique, by keeping it firm, and also the SLOW expansion of the inhale so that I don't get winded. This guy is amazing.

6:50 Proper diagphramaric breathing on mobility - always think expandint ribcage 360 degrees 1. Breathing in - tongue on roof of mouth - lips closed - quitely in nose - slightly ab tension as you inhale Note: Note : forcing too much air in the nose = increase muscle activity, compensation, and tension. Muscle tension = less space for air Note: slight ab tension inhale = more space for ribcage to expand, limiting big muscles like the ribcage and chest from lifting the ribcage up as a unit 2. Breath out - open mouth - slow - air not all out - lower abs get smaller as you exhale Note : forcing air all out limits air and tension

THANK YOU Zac for sharing bio-mechanical facts and sharing💕. I am working with this since I became structural oriented first in my Bodywork and then working in Somatic Psychology. I have found also the same superficial mistakes in the postural generalizations done everywhere, I say Everywhere cuz of yes almost everywhere. The lack of understanding of the rib-rotation and letting us going into a flat spine position hurts my back and shoulders just by seeing it - and then people want a better mattress healing them. But also additional to pain - the Diaphragm as well as so many more (if not all) Health functionings won't engage the way they could - if they were aligned correctly (Fluid-transportation through tight spots?) The Diaphragm is a muscle like all others in need to be positioned correctly to be engaged. With the Oxygen-Advantage I have been learning about the Bio-chemistry of the Breath - and with it proof also for the Body-mechanics. Thank you!!!!!

Finally someone roasting those ridiculous belly breathing exercises. Nasal breathing and think 360 expansion of the ribcage, at least try to get some expansion to the sides as a start. Fighting a long rib flare battle which I think is due to over-breathing and unnatural belly breathing “cues”.

I love your videos Zac, they're life changing. Although, while I understand it's a joke, the Michael Meyers queue is so anti parasympathetic, it's actually quite stressful. That said, I have a truckload of anxiety issues, so might just be me.
@ZacCupplesPT
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
That’s a fair point. I could see someone who does have anxiety around things like that not responding to the cue. I use something as simple as “inhale so no one hears it.” When I’m coaching people I usually make it a joke. In fact, in my clinic, there’s a picture of Michael Myers cutting a birthday cake, so it’s a bit less threatening, though you have to read the person

Zac, i completely fail at the exhale. Its not long enough. I can exhale for a 5 count, my belly gets a bit smaller (even the part below the belly button) but my lower ribs wont move. When i try to exhale louder, fogging the mirror harder, my front neck gets tight. Also i have the feeling there is a ton of air left which could get out if my ribs would move. Do you have any tip how to get afull exhale? I have the feeling im trying to hard and tensing up....

When you are exhaleing the air out , should your stomach around the belly button not cave in at all? From what I've read my abs are over active and I'm trying to use them less, the stomach below belly button should go in but not above? Even when I lean forward sitting down my stomach starts to suck in above the belly button.

re avoiding forceful exhalation - what's the reason why some PRI exercises use a balloon to exhale? Isn't that a forceful exhalation?
@ZacCupplesPT
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
Usually they use that to close to lower ribcage. Practically I’ve found this orients the ribcage in many, so I don’t use it much. I could see some utility for wide ISAs

Talking about breathing is tough, it's such a deep phenomenon that links the psique and the body together If I'm lying down relaxed I cannot not belly breath, it is all that is required to move, in that position, to oxigenate the lungs, more effort would be kinda pointless
@ZacCupplesPT
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
I agree. You really don’t need that much effort during quiet breathing. It becomes a problem when people intentionally restrict chest wall movement. It should move, albeit slightly

Zac, I don’t agree belly breathing is bad thing. It is a starting point. I am sure you had a client that cant potentiate the belly- instantly they breathe with chest. This is very common to see. People should master belly breathing first, create that IAP and then move to the next phase and learn how to expand the rib cage. I would not separate the two, but saying belly breathing is wrong is wrong. Many people cant do it.
@ZacCupplesPT
@ZacCupplesPT Жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying, you want to minimize accessory muscle breathing, and are using belly breathing to reduce that. However, you also limit the intercostals contracting when you belly breathe, which these muscles should normally contract upon inhalation. If you coach very light breathing without necessarily halting movement in a given area, you can likely get the outcome you want. Ceasing movement requires muscle activity as well. Is that something you want during inhalation?
