After I just tested the Fujifilm X100V, I am now finally testing the Fujifilm X100VI. This camera belongs to a very specific section of the market, just like the Leica Q3, Leica M11, Leica M10, Ricoh GRIII, and the Fujifilm X-Pro 3. These cameras are Luxury cameras built for people that want to limit their options to increase creativity, but with the extreme hype surrounding the Fujifilm X100VI, it might not be the best option for everybody. So today I'm talking about: Is the Fujifilm X100VI worth it for you?

My full video on the X100VI is coming next week! Of course there are tons of reasons to buy a "simplified" camera, and if you like it, more power to you! I just wanted to make this video to verbalize this concept I've had in my head for a while, I literally wrote the script for this video between 3:30am and 4:30am haha. Maybe it will solidify the purchasing choice for some people, or maybe help some people beat the FOMO 😊

Wow. I 100% saw myself in your description of someone at the “simplification” end of the curve. At 66 years of age, I have had a plethora of cameras through the years, and currently have several still. But I’m tired of carrying the gear. I get frustrated by overthinking which camera and what lenses to take with me, and find myself packing and repacking and organizing gear to take to an event, and sometimes I just throw up my hands, leave it all at home, and use just my iPhone. For this reason, I think I’d love an X100vi. Unfortunately, my wallet is too empty. 😂

There are 5000 languages in this world and you chose to sepak facts. I think interchangeable lens cameras are the best way to hop around the spectrum. If I want to stay flexible, I put my zoom lens on, when I want a creative challenge, I only take my manual vintage prime lense(s) with me. Flexibility is everything.

Very good advice. Guess as a 65 yr old who’s been taking photos since about 1965 starting with my grandma’s box brownie, I’ve come full circle. Whilst I own full on Canon and medium format pro gear, my main interest now is back to thinking about the photo before hitting the buttons, just like I do when using expensive film stock. As a Fuji film user I decided to add an X100VI to my kit and mimic those days in the early 1980s when all I had was a Minox GT35 with its manual focus, superb 35mm lens and very compact size (still got it). Think I’ll also stick to aperture priority and of course the ibis will help out.

Dude, awesome message. Still heading up the hump on your graph with my x-t20. Been going at it for four years. It's great to be able to change lenses and explore creativity. Sometimes imposing limitations like you said (Portugal trip with just the XF 35/2). So much fun still. These limited cameras don't tempt me yet

when I started I wanted the biggest camera and lens I could afford and explore everywhere, now that I started working professionally I rarely use my big work gear anymore outside of work and the X100 / Q&M series (or any small camera tbh) have brought back the joy of why I started photography in the first place but with a smaller kit. And for that I am willing to pay the price

Your presets, along with other creatures with the same style, have taken me back to the Exploration Phase, where I really feel like I was close to leaving the Simplification Phase. I have been thinking of jumping from Canon to Fuji but just did not feel it was the right path right now. It was really changing my editing style and look that has really got me to rethink my photography and enjoy what I have again. I agree on using the money to get a new lens to try a new style of imaging. Travel is where I want to spend that money, get out of your home comfort zone, see new things and explore, forget about the worries of the world for a day or long weekend. I never want to leave that exploration phase ever again.

Interesting video, but I disagree. I was in my 'exploration phase' when I bought the X100V and it fitted me very well. You zoom with your feet, you learn the exposure triangle with the great dials - there is so much to learn in the beginning that it's a good thing that you are not distracted with choosing a focal length. And the small size enables you to take it everywhere - which is also great for becoming better. But you are right: there comes a time when you have to move on to other 'experiments'. But I was able to sell the X100V for almost the same amount as I bought it when it was time...

honestly thats why i dont really get the hype behind the x100 series fuji cameras, theyre amazing for the people that are already quite seasoned with photography and not typically for beginners. Or people that loved shooting film ofcourse,.,

Thanks for making this video. I was wondering why I wanted this camera so much, after all I have X-T30 the X-T5, Sony a6600 and many prime lenses. But felt overwhelmed with all the options when going out on a shoot. I would simplify things by only taking one lens and then shooting in color. I usually shoot b&w. I’ve had the camera for about three weeks now and it is a quirky little thing. Definitely not the sharpest lens and not the fastest AF but it is fun to grab and go out to relax and enjoy just taking pictures. I started out in photography so many years ago with film and have owned Ricoh, Nikon and Sony when they bought Minolta. I love the fun and excitement that Fujifilm cameras bring. I agree people shouldn’t just start photography with the X100 series limiting themselves to the one focal length. Maybe a used X-T3, with the exposure triangle right there at your fingertips. A zoom and a prime lens. Then go have fun.

I personally hate editing photos and that's why I wanted a Fujifilm camera. It's a horrible process If they had a XE5 so that I could add my 18-55 kit lens from my xt20 (which I barely use because it's too heavy to bring with me easily) it would be great

I had the original X100. I loved looking at it. Definitely a piece of art. But when I went out to take photos, I usually ended up taking something else and so I sold it. If I want to take a camera out but the purpose isn’t photography, I take a pocket camera. If I’m feeling creative, I take a DSLR and one lens, although sometimes that lens is a zoom. Why? Because the DSLR feels more intentional. If you’re carrying one in your hand, it’s more of a reminder that you’re looking for the “Good Photo” that you can be proud of.

I have never owned a proper camera before, I have only indulged in phone photography. I did have a point and shoot back in the 2000s, but I gave that up because the night photos were so noisy. I am planning on getting this for the following reasons - (a) I am not willing to drop a lot of money on photography. Yes the X100VI is expensive for what it is, but the alternative of buying a whole body and set of lenses is more expensive. I do not want to experiment. I just want a good camera to use for the next ten years, (b) This is a tiny camera. The best camera is the one you're already carrying, and I am more likely to carry this on me than a full blown kit of body and lenses. I also do not want to stand out as a "photographer" because I accept that I am not one. I am just a tourist who wants to click better quality photos than my phone can, (c) I like that it has film simulations. It would allow me to share jpegs straight out of the camera instead of asking family and friends to wait a few days so I can edit RAWs in lightroom on my laptop, and (d) I know from my experience of using Halide etc on my phone that I am not capable of climbing up to the summit of that curve on your graph. My brain simply isn't a natural at understanding the technicals of photography. P.S - Speaking of film simulations and recipes, are you planning on releasing Fujifilm recipes of the pastel dreamy look you released as presets for lightroom a while back? I bought them last month and love them, but my brain is so weak I do not remember what name they had 😛 P.P.S - Some people say the lens on the X100VI isn't good enough for the sensor. That the images are too soft on this. Is this a major negative for this camera? My thinking was that if we're looking to simulate film, then softness isn't a con?
@no.7893
@no.7893 6 ай бұрын
I don’t have a x100 so I can’t speak to how bad the softness is but I’d imagine it’s similar to using old glass and having a bit of haze. If you wanted absolute clarity you wouldn’t be shooting with a 70 year old rangefinder. Crappiness is part of the appeal to some.

The graph is pretty accurate and i suppose I'm somewhere towards the end of it. I've got 2 FF cameras and a decent collection of lenses. I want an EDC camera that doesn't give me GAS for new lenses and does simplify the process. Too often I get analysis paralysis when deciding what lenses i want to shoot with when I leave the house. So yeah an X100VI is not what I'd call a necessity for me, it's definitely a luxury but one I know I'd enjoy. But it's gonna take months to get my preorder so maybe I'll have a change of heart over time. We'll see 🤷🏼‍♂️.

great video and agree with this. I hated my sony aps-c for its form factor, crop sensor, the lens size and weight and felt pressure to switch to something like a leica or fuji or to go FF. I spent the last six months just using a very cheap light manual focus lens to experiment with and loved it... now realising that sony aps-c is great place for experimenting as there's a lot of cheap and 2nd hand lenses, the camera has a great range of features, customisation and flexibility. I dont really love the camera but i am super enjoying experimentation

What a great video, I agree with a lot of comments here, I’m on the downward slope. I have an xt3 with five lenses which I never know which one to take, most of the time I can’t be bothered at all. So the x100v1 sounds great, I’m thinking of trading in it all for an x100v1, so I don’t have to think too much as I’m getting just too old!

I’m a very experienced photographer but only have less than beginner money - and I don’t mean x100vi money either. Good voice of reason So simplification for me is going to have to be something a lot cheaper and older - or perhaps just one fixed lens!

Thanks for this, definitely would love to get one of these but, would feel guilty letting my lenses and sony cameras sit. I did get the xt30ii, it’s been great, but if you are used to Sonys dynamic range, auto focus stickyness, and instant photos, instead of that annoying image processing screen you may not want to get an XT30 ;)
@futc.photography
@futc.photography 6 ай бұрын
Yeah once you’re used to Sony gear, it’s hard to completely switch, I‘m definitely sticking with my Sony stuff for a while. By the way, the processing screen is a result of you setting the clarity setting, if you set it to 0 the camera becomes a lot more responsive.

The only reason I bought a camera was because I thought the X100VI looked cool and took good pictures and is easy to use. Really I would have never gotten a camera otherwise. Dont care about photography at all really, I just want to take cool pictures on vacation which I will do this summer with it. And if I want more options ill just buy another camera.
