As one who struggles with memory issues due to my military service, this gives me a spark of an idea anyway in how to document my life. I've worked with people with dementia as a CNA in a nursing home and it is not a fun journey for these people. I've found that journaling helps a lot in remembering a little, if nothing else how irrational I was in my thinking when struggling with my mental health. Journaling when upset or angry really helps also, as it gets my feelings out so I don't pop a gasket. I can make it into a long prayer and it really helps.

I have said this before, I am in my 50s and I certainly have learned a lot more than just photography from you- I too also take many pictures of my family and myself and spend most of my income in creating memories.- Why? well, When I am on my death bed I don't want to remember or think about the things I purchased or acquired. I want to be thinking of all the moments and memories and events with my family and friends while listening to music.

Damn this one hits home. Watching my grandma have her mind destroyed by dementia is breaking me. It’s crazy how she can remember random small details from the past, but can’t remember what she just said. She’s listened to Swiss yodeling bands for decades so I’m definitely going to try and see it that music will trigger different memories for her. Thanks Jake!

Every year since 2017, I’ve been making a playlist of all the songs I play on repeat throughout the year. Every time I go back to those songs, a hundred memories and emotions associated with those songs come flooding back. And if I feel good in a moment, I’ll put on a song to capture that feeling forever. It’s incredible what music can do 🖤

I have been doing something similar for more than three years, I’ve been creating a playlist in my phone for each month of each year and added the songs that I discovered that month and mostly listened at that time. Totally worth it, now I can remember what I used to listen back in 2019 and what you said, the feelings and experiences I had and why I listened those songs at that time, I totally recommend this.

Love the shots in this video! I'm only 20 right now but I've noticed I am already forgetting things that I did when I was like 4-10 years old and around that time I took pride in being able to remember pretty much everything. So, finding new ways to remember my life and experiences has become very important to value the little things and value things that once made me happy but I had just forgotten.

Funnily enough, I've collected a spotify playlist for years, conviniently called "memories". But yea, that is so true with music. I met someone once who was not able to speak or communicate in any way at all anymore, completely "out from this world", but when you'd put a guitar on her hands, she would play multiple songs perfectly, and those were not even the easiest songs there are. It was just incredible.

Gah - this is so powerful, man. My wife is always amazed at how I can know the year that a song came out (*explicit* memory) even from 15, 20, 25 years ago. I just know how I felt during that period of my life (*implicit* memory), so that makes it really easy. And it's fun to sit back and let those feelings wash over me for a minute... But I'd never really consciously thought of that link between the two. Thanks for making it all make more sense... though you've now rubbed off the shine of my magic ability to know song release dates! 🤣

I use Day One Journal for writing down my life and the day-to-day minutiae, and have done so for nearly a decade now! I love watching videos like this because it gives me new ways to think about how to capture my life as I live it, and how to remember people, places, feelings, and so on from days long gone. It offers me the ability to really dig into my memory and think about what more I could add to the contextual narratives of my lives as I've lived them. Thank you for this wonderful creation, and may your memories continue to flourish and subsist how you wish them to.

That's actually a really interesting and new way to keep track of memories, and I think it can be very useful. I also strongly associate songs with memories, sowriting them down would be a game changer. Would. If I actually sit down and write them. Never was the diary person, but I do write when I feel a rush of emotions, and rereading those journal entries also help relive moments :)

Man, I'm so glad I found your channel. Especially this video, the tie between music and memory rings so true for me as well. Some of my strongest memories involve jamming with friends as kids. The album I listened to on my train ride through the Italian countryside. An album I used to spam with a close buddy who we lost recently has been the sharpest reminder of him. You have a lot of profound ideas and a gift for putting them into video form.

Forgetting is one of my greatest fears in life. My family doesn't have a history of dementia or Alzheimer's but watching movies/tvshows/reading books on it. I thought how cruel it is and I started thinking, too, how I wanted to protect those memories and remember when I am older. So, I started taking a lot of pictures, saving old songs, and recording video/audio bites of small moments with friends/family (even it's cringe at the moment). Trying to be my own historian in a way. Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you Jake for making this video! It's nice to know that I am not alone when having these kinds of thoughts.

For several months, (years ?), I found out like you that music was a strong anchor of memories. Each time I listen to an "old" song, I relive the moment when this song played. Some songs have more influence than others. My problem is that I never register the title of the group performing. Today I'm trying to gather as much information as I can and find these old song and build my "life" playlist. Music also have a strong effect on my mood. Lighten it up, or on the contrary a way to "let it go" when I'm down. I'll also building a list of songs for that matter. There are also songs I experience in some bad / sad moment, that are lovely, but I just can't listen to them any more as they are bringing back those sad moments... Finally, everytime I'm listening to a songs, I've no more voice talking in my head, but images of a video clips I'm building in my head ! Thank you for this video Jake. Take care.

Great points! After I went through my vision loss, I found that my memory has definitely improved since I think memory is a muscle and it takes lots of effort to flex at times, but when we do it definitely grows. My auditorial memory has definitely grown, but I have also gotten into using cameras since my vision loss which has been a powerful way to clearly capture things in person that I can look at on my computer later to enhance my visual memory through photo and video.

This is so true! I remember when I was on a holiday with my little brother a few years ago, we were surfing for the first time (absolutely hooked now). When we were driving with the surf school van to ‘the secret spot’ for our last lesson I was just staring out of the window and saw the waves crashing on the big cliffs. It was such a peaceful moment that I genuinely felt so good in. On the radio was first R.E.M with Losing my Religion and then Coldplay with Paradise. Now everytime me of my brother hears either of these songs we instantly remember the holiday, the people we met and I can just picture it like it was yesterday. Music is incredibly powerful! Thank you for sharing this Jake, I really enjoy your videos! 👌🏼

This is so funny because I wasn’t expecting you to say music as a way of keeping hold of memories but I’ve done this for years and it’s crazy how much it connects me to myself, and secures me in my identity. Just making a KZbin playlist with whatever feels like your kind of songs at the time, it lets you go back and remember how strong everything was, how deep those feelings went. Another thing I do to pair with the music is writing. As soon as I started thinking of it not as journalling, but writing, I immediately was able to flow into it way better. Because remembering the feelings from the point of view of your past self, it adds so much understanding to what you were thinking at the time, what your perception was. Just opening up notes and saying what you thought, or deceiving a powerful moment that happened that day, you’ll likely never get the exact moment again, but documenting it through the lens of how you felt the moment went, it’s incredible what it can do

You are wise beyond your years my friend! The 80's were rough on me but there was one song that helped me through it. "Power and the Passion" by Midnight Oil. There was one line that resonated with me at that time " It's better to die on your feet than to live on your knees..." That song, to this day, is so powerful for me. Absolutely love your work and your ability to tell a meaningful and powerful story!

This is by far the most emotional paid promotion video I have ever seen. The way you told this was spot on, and I was actually watching another KZbin video of a girl singing ‘you are my sunshine’ with her baby brother who has Down syndrome, and got me crying somehow, thinking that music/song has the power to spark joy and speaks to one’s emotions.

Music and songs don't just make your memories feel real but also your dreams and the memories that are not even yours are feel to be much alive with true music. Like for example you can feel and visualise what's like living in Tokyo in 50's or in Jamaica in 30's by just listening songs of that time of that place, it's just like a partial time travel and it feels powerfull and humanne. Also one another thing I feel about memory is that it's not just a single memory but a cluster of memory that is binded together with other memories of the same time, so one way is to remember some of your memories look at the major incidents happening at that time like reading past newspapers or memories of someone else of that time can reignite your little memories too. Thanks for creating thing, love you as always ❤️❤️

The video touched me a lot, in my family there is dementia as well as I have known for 2 years that I am a neurodiverse person, since my youth I know that I am dyslexic, this form has difficulty remembering what I have just said or seen. As an aphantasie, my memories go back between 4-6 years, which severely limits my ability for deep and wide memory. It also makes me a little emotional, it always makes me sad, due to the further neurodiversity of the adh it makes my memories a little confused, which is very difficult for me in the memory with others. Since this year I know that I am autistic, which explained a lot of things in my life to me, very amazing. It's hard for me to realize who I am right now. What strikes me from time to time is that when I listen to songs from my youth, the one and the other memories come to mind again, unfortunately only fragments, because the neurodiversities deny me further access. That's crazy. Thank you for your video❤🎉

The music journal idea is very good. It's been a while since I listened to music, like only for myself, purposely to make me feel something. It can seems weird but I find it hard to look for music that I would like. I don't like very much spotify and youtube suggestions. And I don't listen to radio because the advertising annoys me. So I'm kinda stuck. It take too much time to find the music I like that I kinda... gave up. I now realize what I'm missing and I think I'm going to change that (loss of) habit. And why not start a music journal, yeah. My way of remembering is writing. Poetry, journaling, inner thoughts, reflexions, ideas, letters to my past self, letters to my future self, pamplets, articles... Doesn't matter what, I write. Writing can help to store so much things. It's a beautiful art form to me because you can twist and model the words so they express what you feel in so much ways, with so much tools. Anyway, thank you for this video. I really like your work.

Late to the party but wanted to share this ! observation drawing is incredible for memory. from time to time I take the habit of drawing anytime or anywhere i go. I like also to right comments, I take notes on the weither, feels, conversations, jokes... Very quick drawings most of the time, or longer ones if I draw my lover sleeping for exemple. I notice that years later, when I go back to these shecktbooks, it's incredible how I remember everything. I often remember what we were saying, how it felt, when it was. But most strongly how I was feeling at the time emotion-wise. Like. Amazingly well. I think the act of drawing,(with the level of subjectivity it demands and the fact that you have to actually take some time to do it) manages to really incapsulate a moment. Idk. :)

Beautiful video, as always, Jake. It takes a lot of courage and a special kind of person to be this vulnerable on camera. My family (I am more than a decade older than you) are also plagued with dementia and Alzheimer's. I highly recommend looking up 'The Caretaker - Everywhere at the end of time'. A very powerful album (5 actually) that portrays the journey of someone going through the stages of dementia. Very very powerful.

Jake, you truly inspire me to make videos💛 - YES, I think music is like the texture of time; it prints feelings in our soul, so when we get to replay "that song," it is like "wearing" back a memory inside; that only you know-how! I also use music to pin my memories. I truly appreciate your thoughts, your ways of visually sharing your feelings, the topics, and your sincere ways of exposing your mind and heart through cinematography and photography. Thank you so much! 😃

Absolutely outstanding as always Jake! Nothing stirs me inside as much as music it’s the one thing I couldn’t live without. Dementia has affected my family for generations too… I feel your pain. Live well dude.

"remembering is reassembling" - the more (multiple sensory) cues the brain can get, the easier it is to recall, since we don't remember facts, but rather feelings.
