Let’s be absolutely honest and real. Walmart and Kroger are not ripping us off. We are responsible adults who are ripping ourselves off. 😮 It is our own refusal to make a plan and stick to it that allows us to spend more than we should. Remember, not everyone has to budget carefully. It’s okay to spend as little or as much as you can afford , on anything. The costly prepared foods are available for those who want to purchase them and they look really appealing. Not everyone cares about nutritional value for dollar spent. But, many of us do. So, decide what’s important to you and be vigilant.

Your process is what I have done for years. I always take inventory of what I have on my shelves, then make my list ... leftover veggies go directly into a large container in the freezer - when it's full, it's time to make soup. Most important - grocery shop alone. Hubby and kids are never as disciplined.

Use your crockpot to make a larger quantity then divide and freeze. Turn one meal into a different meal the next day. Roast on Sunday becomes BBQ sandwiches the next. Or a big pot of soup by using the gravy adding carrots, potatoes and noodles. Delicious. I always make a big pot of spaghetti using the left overs for spaghetti pie. Mix spaghetti with all the sauce. Layer in greased casserole half of the spaghetti, add cheese and some pepperoni or some cut meatballs. Cover with Spaghetti then sprinkle layer of cheese. Bake 25 min until warmed and bubbly. Yummy.

As a widow, I still cook as if for 4 to 10 people. Then I freeze whatever, and have many meals. I always buy meat packages in family size, and then individually repackage what I know I will use. Over all it is expensive up front, but I do not have to buy meat but once a month or longer.

My TIP: find out which day(s) and estimated times your store does markdowns. Our store does markdowns every morning between 8:30-9:30 am. It's a 40% markdown, generally, but we regularly have some things marked down as much as 90%. I have a budget set aside just for these items. I call them my "Deals of the day" lol

Buying in bulk is the only way to go besides growing your own. I made about 40 pounds of eggplant parmesan and I am single, but my cost for all of it is only about $18. The eggplant is from my garden, the sauce is from the tomatoes I grow, eggs are from my chicken coop, I made my own bread crumbs, and only the cheese, oil for frying, and flour, came from the store. It took me all day to peel and fry the eggplant, and the next day I made 4 big pans of it with a little left over. At 1 pound per meal, my cost is only about 45 cents. If I add garlic bread then my total would be 50 cents. I only drink water from my well. I do things like this all the time and eat healthier than 95% of the people out there for a small fraction of the cost.

It always helps if you know the layout of the store VERY well. That way you don't go up and down every aisle and linger over things you don't need. I make my list in the order each item is in the store, to the best of my ability. I used to always use a stenographer pad for my list. I put food on the left column and other items on the right. At the bottom of the right hand column, I would write down my menu and where to find the recipe (if using) I went through the same process Misty described and then I had my menu where I could always see it, and I could refer to my list for anything I needed to transfer to the next list. I stopped going to Walmart because I was always spending more than I needed. I could get most things in other grocery stores.

Another tip, especially if you don't cook at home as much as you'd like to: If there's something you really like (either prepackaged or restaurant food), figure out a way to recreate it from ingredients. Even if you take a "cheat" for one or two of the ingredients, then you can move on and figure a way to recreate the "cheat" ingredients. For example, I LOVE Red Lobster's roasted Brussels sprouts. I was craving them and had an abundance of Brussels sprouts so I looked up the copycat recipe online. It's very simple to make the French's fried onions and I had a bottle of sesame ginger glaze I had purchased. It saved me time using the bottled glaze because I didn't have all the ingredients. Next time I will try using the ingredients in the copycat recipe for the glaze. Sometimes giving myself a little grace for a small win will encourage me to continue to push forward to become less dependent on the grocery store.

I live in a rural area and I drive 75 miles each way to get groceries once a month, and I always make a list because if I forget something then I have to wait a month before I go to the store again. Shopping for groceries once a month really highlights what items are costing me the most or least each month and has really made me a better shopper. On a side note, there is a Kroger owned Fred Meyer retail / grocery store as well as a Walmart 60 miles away, but I prefer to drive the 75 miles to get to a Winco, which has much better prices overall and better selection.

I love doing my main grocery shopping at Winco. But, I do shop the sales ads of Kroger and Albertsons for their sales specials. At least those 2 stores are just a few blocks from each other. And my stores are a lot closer than yours. I would love to live further away, it's not country here anymore like it used to be, at least we are still out of city limits, not sure for how much longer though.

I always plan on making things that will make leftovers. My husband is retired (he doesn't cook at all lol), so I make sure he has something to heat up, and I take with me to work. I always look at grocery ad for Kroger and Aldi to see if there is anything that I really need. Since I've been preparing and canning for a few years, I pretty much look to see if there are any specials on the food items that I think are good stock up prices. I don't live on a homestead with any animals, but I do garden. I always have to get my meat and milk at the store. I also always check to see if any meat is on clearance when I go. Many times, I've found round steak or other beef there and just bring it home and can it up for later. I don't buy everything in bulk, but I'm always checking my inventory of items every week to see if I'm getting low on things. I HAVE to meal plan every week. I usually make Wednesday breakfast meals because it's something I can do quick before church

I shop 3-4 different stores. Two of those stores I shop their store ads for specials nearly every week, and depending on price and quantity, and will stock up. I do my main shopping at another grocery store, that does not put out ads, at least once a month. I do still go to Walmart, about once a month to pick up a few items/brands that I can't find at the grocery store, but it's getting to where I make less trips to Walmart. I don't necessarily do meal planning, but I like to keep things on hand for whatever I may decide to fix for meals. I have gone to making some of my own mixes for gravy, taco seasoning, spaghetti, etc. If I know we are not going to eat leftovers they go in the freezer and sometimes becomes a Hodge podge stew. Plus, I keep a grocery list of the main things I purchase, on the fridge and will mark things on it that I have used and need to replace.

One thing we do as an example is we'll have chili dogs one night then we add some tomatoes, corn, onion and whatever we have that is good for second night. And finally we'll add elbow macaroni cubed potatoes and peas of course with spices and have a great chilli noodle dish. Tastes great fills you up and saves money!

We do “ethnic” night. We learn about a culture. Then cook their traditional foods as a family. Fun to taste / experiment. Even more fun if you can field trip to an Indian bazaar, mid eastern market, fiesta, etc and shop the stores. Try some unique fruit/veggie or snacks.

Warning: My husband and. I got a painful burning in our mouth after eating lettuce that was on sale cheap from Publix. It looked perfect. And was large. And only 99 cents so we got one. We normally eat organic. And it left a chalky feeling like as if it was mercury or battery acid or something that burned us. I’m glad we immediately spit it out. Even brushing your teeth doesn’t help even with activated charcoal. It just made it worse. So we ate a bunch of frozen fruits. Be careful that we pay attention n try each thing we eat , small bites n if you feel pain spit it out. I still have it and could get it tested but not sure where to go or what to do with it. We don’t have extra money to pay for a test if they charge and we don’t have good phone service , no data and barely any internet, to make calls, so we have to go to town. It makes it hard yo get things done. But that’s just the way it is here in the mountains. We are not real used to this, originally we are from cities with lots of internet n data. But we like It here. So anyways, we are going to town tomorrow n we will maybe get info on what direction to follow on this.

Sometimes if all you have is a shoestring check, you might want to buy in bulk but remember, it costs MORE for that BIGGER pack It's fine if you can afford it, but also be open to opting for free food boxes and food from your local soup kitchens Another thing that can save money is if you don't have ridiculously big appetite that can cause you to overeat I guarantee it's going to be MUCH CHEAPER to feed someone with a SMALLER appetite than it is to feed someone with a MUCH BIGGER appetite because they CAN eat you out of house and home like an elephant can

One thing to remember is it can be easier said than done if they move stuff around, forcing you to have to go through the isles to look for what you need from your list When they move stuff around, you're actually forced to look around as you're trying to find the stuff on your list One thing you can do is use an online shopping service and have stuff delivered so you're not as tempted as you otherwise would be You may also be tempted online, but I guess it depends on your level of resist ability When you go to the store, remember those hygienic products and other things are only out for a time, and I'm talking about stuff that you may find like say in certain snack or hygienic Items, they're going to change or be discontinued SOMETIME If you go for something specific from your list Be open Covering other versions of the same thing, because SOMETIMES those items are newer and better If you see something that could potentially be newer and better than what you usually get, feel free to try it if you want if you're willing to forgo what you were originally after Let's say you're after a specific or shampoo, but when you go down the aisle, you see something that's newer and better If you're willing to forgo the version you usually get that's on your list, then READ the LABEL, COMPARE PRICES, and make an INFORMED decision You can follow this tip for anything you know will be changed or discontinued eventually

I usually do have a list. I know I rarely buy anything that isn't on it...but if I don't take one. Lol. I wind up with a whole lot of stuff. Sometimes I buy something, get home, and lo and behold, I already had four. So, that list is essential. I still am not doing the menu planning, but I do think it would be a much better way to go. We started freezing meals. I always make too much for just the two of us, so now, we freeze at least two portions for a day when neither of us feels like cooking. My husband makes the best soups I've ever eaten. He doesn't know how to make a small pot, so we freeze soup in bags. That worked out so beautifully when we were both under the weather. All I had to do was pull one out. Also, if you freeze it flat, it thaws out much faster. (Rose Red Homestead recommended that.) My sister used to double her recipes and make an extra to put in the freezer. That way, she had meals ready to go for anything. It also helped when she needed to take a meal to a family suffering a loss. There truly is a lot you can do. So, all of those prepackaged foods? You can make them yourself and freeze them. You can also brown hamburger and freeze it to be used for spaghetti, soup, etc. I sometimes do that to save time later. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and tips with us. God bless you and your family.

I cook in bulk and put them in microwave prep containers with lids. In this way, I am not having people not eat leftovers but eating things that they would go to the store and get those microwave meals. Yes, this means, making 15 different meals however, freezing it means I am cooking for 2 weeks at a time. I make my OWN foods and know what is in them. I don't need added ingredients that my body can't process. If you know a company that would send you coupons, write them. Banquet, Diamond, Kelloggs, Eggo, etc. Yes, I have received coupons and save money this way. If you absolutely need snacks, make those in bulk and freeze it. I have made cookies, brownies, tarts, and cupcakes. I even make sandwiches and freeze those so that all I need to do is take and go when I am on the run. I don't need to do anything cause it will thaw as I go do my day without having to go out to eat so much. Yes, I do save more money by bringing my own lunch and having it in my car in a thermal carry bag so I can skip eating out and save my money on what matters. I also bring an emergency med kit (I am diabetic) and don't want to be without emergency insulin pens. They are refrigerated in the bag because I do freeze cold bottles and put it in the thermal bag with my things. Bring drinks if you so choose as well. I sometimes have to go a distance to a costco or whatever but at least I am getting something worth my money in bulk.
