I came looking for this update because I was at Walmart on Thursday, and noticed a guy had grabbed a handful of Walmart cards, then he was taking like 5 cards for certain restaurants. I pointed him out to the self checkout monitor, told her what he's gonna do with them, and someone should notice when he brings them back. She actually called for a manager! I didn't expect that at all. So I started explaining it to the manager. He was nodding in agreement and said that he would tell someone in loss prevention to review the surveillance footage, and keep an eye out for when he comes back. I have seen this happen before, but I didn't know what they were doing. I was curious about it, but didn't say anything. I'll sure say something about now! This happens a lot!

No! They do not have to be in the store. They add a sticker over the gift card sticker code. As soon as it's loaded with your money, they get an alert on their phone. Then they spend your money.

Any account that would hold you accountable for blatant fraud on the account needs to be closed immediately. The consumer isn't responsible for the vendor's lack of security. That would benefit the vendor to have poor security.

Find out if there's an on going investigation of gift card scamming going on by the FBI. It may have made some regional news elsewhere. People rarely invent their own scams. They are taught by others. So the patterns start looking similar... the M.O. or modus operandi if you want to use some university bought words.

This happened to me at Target. Don't purchase gift cards. Customers should start taking the cards off of the hooks so that they can't be sold. If the companies won't stop it shoppers should take the cards to prevent them from being sold to innocent people.

Another thing customers can do is Get an audit farm and have the IRS audit any business that's doing wrong by their customers.... If you have any phone calls that were recorded, and definitely any card statements where you loaded the money onto a gift card for someone else, that would also help if you have a bank statement I strongly agree with contacting the local news But you should also contact the REGIONAL news, too! If you can gather every single customer who were wronged by that same store, all of you need to show up in person and do a citizens arrest, and have the cops with you, because this is your right Definitely make a police report first, and tell them you're pressing charges Request that every last worker in that particular store goes to jail until proper restitution is made When you make a police report and press charges, do a theft report, you and each and every customer who came along like-minded like you and wants to take action and have these thugs arrested Every last worker in the involved store is arrested and jailed UNTIL.... You can also call your State Bar and put a lien on the store and anything those workers own so none of them can sell not even their cars, or use any money from their bank accounts You can get a real good lawyer who handles these matters and freeze every asset this particular establishment owns and everything every worker owns When the thief is found, then your lawyer can selectively start lifting liens and go after the THIEF, but ONLY AFTER the thieves assets are ALL FROZEN LLC doesn't matter, you can bust through an LLC, but only with the help of a good lawyer who knows how to do it You can take their homes IF it comes to THAT and even their cars, bank accounts and other assets If you all have to liquidate all those assets including the stores, then you all will be FILTHY RICH Because you could easily own that and other establishments Including HOMES, CARS, BANK ACCOUNTS and EVEN the BANK itself that allowed this to happen I guarantee if enough people were to band together and boycott Walmart and just not shop there, all of you join a class action go after everything, I promise full restitution will be made to each and every person who's funds were stolen If you really want them to crack and cave in, all of these tips is exactly how to do it

Sounds like a Walmart employee could be doing the scams! Go see an attorney who offers free consultation. This could be a class action lawsuit where thousands have been affected. The attorney should take the case on contingency fee. How they work: A contingency fee is a way to pay for your legal services after winning your claim. The fee comes out of case if he/she wins. First check out a class action case attorney.

Last Christmas I purchased a gift card for my grandson at Target. I gave him the card and the receipt. When he went to use it the cashier had told him that the card was scammed. Since I gave the receipt they honored the card. What the scammers are doing is they steal the cards from the displays, take them home and record all of the numbers. They then glue the cards back together and return the cards and then you put money on them and the scammers use them before you can. I will never buy another gift card. I will give cash.

So... here's how you get your $150 back, plus attorneys fees, and get WalMart to respond. File a civil claim in small claims court... and Do Not allow WalMart to settle out of court. What you will do is set a legal judgment against WalMart, which others can act upon for the same reason. Corporate only listens to legal judgments, not on WalMart's favor. Expect WalMart to show up at trial with a team of lawyers, but dont let that dissuade you, its a tactic. Stand your ground, you will very likely succeed and provide a relief pathway for many other consumers as well. Fraud is illegal, and that is what WalMart is allowing to occur.

The same thing happened to me, what I did was notify the federal authorities, and they did their process, I then went into the local store, brought up to the store manager, she told me some of the same things that they told you, so I mentioned that Walmart is in violation of the Goods and Service Act, meaning I paid for their service and they did not provide that service, I had a Federal officer with me at the time, and he reiterated the same thing, so the store manager refunded my money

My son is in IT and a wiz on the computer. I told him what happened to you. He said that one way this happens is that the scammers get the physical numbers of the cards and they create a program tying these numbers to a program that as soon as the card on the shelf is loaded and activated it triggers an immediate transfer to the scammer's account---- basically it's gone before you leave the store. Somehow they are in the Walmart system and have gained access to this information. It really sucks. Thank you for keeping us posted on what you are doing to investigate. There will be no gift cards of any kind given for Christmas this year. Cash it is!!!

It's happened to me several times, none at Walmart though. I've had Sephora and Ulta cards that were already used by the time I sat down to use them. There's never any consumer relief with this issue. It's infuriating. I'd advise everyone to avoid all gift cards until companies step up and fraud-proof the cards.

Happened to me in 2017 and testimonials showed it had been going on for years before that. Get the word out! I avoid Walmart when I can. It made me that mad, talking in circles for hours with those clowns, just to be told it's not their problem, even though they know exactly which store it was used at (on the other side of the country), probably have video footage of who used the card, and likely have a paper trail on each one.

I had this scam happen to my sons back in 2017, looked into it, and saw that VERY MANY people had the same thing happen, only to ALL be told that we must take the issue to the local police and Walmart won't do anything about it. I'm not the biggest fan of Amazon, but I have yet to have them steal hundreds of dollars from my kids and act like it's not their fault or their problem. It's a good thing you contacted the police. I would go further and call the FBI and report everything that you have and I would call a local news agency and see if they can get this information on your local TV and Internet channels. I called my local police one time to check about a possible phone scam. They took my information and said I should call the FBI and report everything to them , also. Because I hadn't actually lost any money there was little that they could do but they kept my information. The FBI agent I spoke with was very polite and considerate. They said if I ever lost any money in a scam they would be able to do more. At least I was able to give them the phone number from the scammer. I know a lot of people that hate the FBI or the idea of the FBI and don't like the idea of talking to them but they are there to help people and you should have a local number to get a hold of them.

My local Walmart DOES. It all depends on where u live. My town is hugely Republican. We have law and order . We don’t put up with crime which is why I can leave my house to go to work and not even lock my door and it’s safe. Heck I don’t even close my door, so my cats can go in and out all day. Imagine my door is open all day and nobody comes in to rob me and I have lots to steal. We all look out for one another in my small beach town. @@TheMacsLife0 if Walmart sold you a laptop and the box you bought ended up being empty because someone stole the laptop and added something for weight to the box, Walmart would have to refund you. Why don’t they have to refund you when the card you bought doesn’t have the credit in it that you paid for? This wasn’t a case of the customer losing the card or having the card compromised, the cards were compromised on Walmarts watch. It’s their responsibility Take this as high as you can. The rest of us have less loud of a voice to the corporate world. Your voice may not be overly loud to them but maybe it’s loud enough to get some attention. Weather you meant to, you are speaking for many consumers who are having a hard go of it. Well meaning family would give us gift cards when we were homeless to help out, this would have devastated us and our family who didn’t have a lot to give but did anyway. To have money you barely scraped together to help a loved one stuck a state away go down the drain is something that’s happened to me when I’ve tried to help someone. It’s terrible.

Never buy gift cards, any of them. This happens all over the place. If you're mailing the gift, use a personal check or a cashier's check. If you're giving the gift in person, give cash. There's too many opportunities for scammers to get these card numbers, from the manufacturer's employees, to the shippers, to the store employees, to people off the street getting the numbers off of unprotected cards. The stores don't care, they get your money when you buy the card, and then they get the profit when the scammer spends your money at their store. They're absolutely NO incentive to fix the problem. Walmart has the scammer's info, they could report it as a cyber crime, and initiate the investigation, but why waste the time, they're not losing money.

I have had a issue with Wal Mart in that I am disabled and have had to use the delivery service and every time I have my debit card has been compromised. I mean to the point of several hundred dollars. It happens within a few hours of my getting groceries. My bank has advised me to not use Wal Mart grocery delivery as they have seen this happening more often.

All this just makes me so mad...what's wrong with people? I'm disabled as well and last month I had my food stamp card drained for every cent on the day my benefits came in! The thief/scammer/hacker didn't have my card but some how must have hacked into their system and got the card numbers. That was the only explanation my local office could think of and said it's happening all the time now. The purchases were made in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia...and I'm in Texas!! To make it worse, we had just got hit by hurricane Beryl and I lost all my food from being without power for 5 days. I was waiting for my benefits to come in so I could try to replace a little bit of the food I lost and when I checked my balance, it was 0.00!! I'm still waiting to find out if my stolen benefits will be replaced. Something must be done about these hackers now. All theses companies and agencies need to get up with the times and secure their cards to protect people! They need to track down these criminals, especially if they have the addresses of where the purchases are being delivered to. It's very upsetting and unsettling not knowing if we will be targeted again. I'm a nervous wreck worrying about it. I pray all these thieving, scamming hackers get caught and prosecuted. As a previous customer service manager (not retail) i would encourage you not to give up. You have several options, email and or call your local news tv consumer reporter, mail letter to head of walmart corp home office, your attorney general or senator. My senator has an online form and helped me within a few weeks on a matter last year.

What happens to these gift cards is someone buys a bunch of gift cards, scratches them and gets the numbers off them, then they replace the scratch material. Then during their shopping puts the cards on the shelf for people to pick up. Then some how figures out when the card is loaded,. So be careful with any gift card you buy and load. this is not a new scam. It has been around for a bit.

The FBI won't do anything. I was told to contact them by PayPal when I received an empty package from a scammer on market place. I was simply out my $300.00 dollars. I checked the seller out and she and her husband are selling cars and have a unlicensed auto repair business. So I turned them into the IRS. People need to be careful of who they scam. Perhaps my percentage of their undeclared taxes will be my payback for her scamming me.

They will not start a "class action lawsuit." A class action suit is a civil action, comprised of a group of wronged litigants. It is not usually handled as a criminal matter by state attorneys. They can instigate an investigation for fraud or theft.

They are too far removed from their customers to understand how their actions affect their customers. I like to compare Walmart to Sears. Sears was the largest retailer in the USA. They gave it all away because they did stupid, stupid things and they could not figure out which things were so stupid that they lost their entire company. This is a classic business problem. As a company gets bigger and bigger, they get strangled by internal politics and issues like this gets lost in the corporate hierarchy as the ranks try to hide it from their superiors because they want to keep their jobs or they want to get their bonus check.
