The novel ending was a cliff hanger. In the same volume 17 Novel the author said he is ending it here to take a break and wants to write a sequel later. Megumin becomes his gf in the middle of the novels and stays his gf by the end but the harem teasing continues. Volumes 16 and 17 are focused on kazuma and aqua, and the final scene of the series is about kazuma and aqua (it is also the first scene with a hint of romance between the two in the entire series) not megumin. Other harem teasing was eris promising to Marry him, kazuma refusing to give back the ring even though he knew he'll get engaged and kazuma saying in the epilouge he wants to start a harem.

His brain malfunctioned after he realized he was captivtated by aqua. There was no hint of romance with aqua until this final scene of series. Alone it sounds strange but if you read the full v16 n 17 you get the nuance and context behind the scene. >he says she made his heart skip a beat. Look at the illustration as well. The intention behind that scene was very clear. it was the first (but very small) hint of a Kazuma x Aqua The author favorite seems to be Aqua? Because it does not make any sense to end the series with a special moment between aqua and kazuma alone and ignore megumin. Aqua seems to be the official face of Konosuba while Megumin is the fan favorite. Saying megumin is "winner", he "ends" with megumin or he "chooses" megumin is dishonest and ignores 90% of what happens in the novels. The story stopped because author says he wants to take a break. The story didn't stop because the author is done with konosuba.She's just his first gf and the harem teasing continues long after. The series ended with a cliff hanger / open ending and the author said in v17 afterword he wants to take a break and write a sequel later because he's not done with konosuba yet.

Kazuma doesn't end up with Megumin. That whole arc got forgotten in universe. Most readers complained and didn't like the author forcing a romance. So the entire romantic relationship got tossed to the side and forgotten.

@@sparhawk2195 source? i am legit asking because i agree that either kazuma be shipped with a better girl, keep the romance "stagnant", or just make it pure comedy. if you can provide a credible source for this, i'd be at peace and continue watching this anime again.
