Thank you for calling out "nipple confusion". It's something I've been concerned about as I plan to welcome my first baby in December and breastfeed/bottle feed. I've been really concerned about being able to do both, especially because I need to go back to work, but want to still have that breastfeeding bond with her. I appreciate the video! Saved it to reference later!

THANK YOU for making this video!!! I'm a birth doula and I spend quite a bit of time discussing which bottles/pacifiers and paced bottle feeding. I'm 100% sending all my clients to watch your pacifier, bottle, and paced bottle feeding videos after our postpartum chat so they can see and hear the info again from you! Your visuals are so friendly and your explanations are clear and the length of your videos are just right. Keep 'em coming! And BTW, I don't buy nipple confusion, either.

I pumped from birth, but transitioned to exclusive pumping at 2 weeks. I found some helpful Facebook groups dedicated to exclusive pumping where I got help from moms going through the same thing and there's a website literally called Exclusive Pumping that was extremely helpful. The most important things are to figure out the right schedule and settings that optimize milk output and are sustainable for you, to get a hands-free pumping bra that fits your pump, get the right size flange, get a few sets of pump parts, and consider a battery powered pump so you can move around. Once I figured those out it felt more manageable and I pumped until I dried up 2 weeks before my baby turned 1.

As a second time mom, we knew I would probably have a low supply like with our first (pcos), but I still breast feed as well as bottle feed. Luckily both my kids have/had good latches, but I am such a hover parent when other people give my kiddo a bottle to make sure they are pace feeding so I dont have flow issues 😂

Warning! Babies lose their suck reflex and may stop taking bottles if they don’t take them frequently enough! My son took usually 1 bottle every day from week 1 to week 8 when he suddenly stopped taking them. This led to a lot of frustration because I couldn’t leave him with anyone else for very long and I couldn’t take naps while he was watched and fed anymore. And then when I had to go on a trip for several days when he was 4.5 months old, we spent so much money and time trying to get him to take a bottle. So in hindsight, I wish we had given him bottles more frequently and encouraged him to use a pacifier to keep him well practiced with bottle sucking.
@mamanursetina3 ай бұрын
Oh no, I am sorry to hear that. Yes it becomes no longer reflex and more voluntary sucking between around 2-4 months of age

BEST video about breastfeeding!! can you do a video with bottle/nipple recommendations?? I chose the wide nipple (was afraid of nipple confusion) but I think that was too big for my newborn and he developed a shallow latch on my boob, so now switching to a non wide nipple that he can have a deep latch with.

I am so happy i learned about paced bottle feeding. Unfortunately my own anatomy makes it hard to trigger my babys suck reflex. The lactation consultant advise made breastfeeding frustrating for baby and me. It also made it that baby was not getting enough food. Started combo feeding breast milk and baby is doing much better with weight and latch.

The benefit is that decrease in air. IMO the shape of the bottle is the most important piece and frequent burping and correct feeding technique

My little one is such a foodie that he screams 2 seconds after the nipple is taken out for the burping! This kid will then hold onto his burps at all cost 🫠 He will also fall asleep sometimes while eating, and when we move to take the bottle away he wakes himself up to pull the bottle back, just to fall asleep again 10 seconds later.

My baby was a NICU baby. There were Too many tubes to breastfeed initially so the bottle was the only option. I was able to speak to the lactation consultant, got help getting a latch, figured it holds for me, because my breasts went from D/C cups to F CUPS. We went through a learning curve, but patience, and tuning out the initial crying, we’ve been able to bottle and breastfeed no problems. You don’t get to pick which bottle the NICU uses, but it’s not the end of the world.

Just tried the bottle for the first time last night (5 weeks old) and she had no problem with her taking it but idk if I agree with allowing too much air in the nipple. Based on your advice we didn’t stress over it but afterward we burped her and she burped up SO much air and then was fussy all night with gas and discomfort. Maybe she’s more senesitve to swallowing air because she’s had gas issues in the past but usually a burp or two and some Mylicon helps but this was really bad! It sucked because my husband feeding her the bottle was supposed to make my life easier and instead I was up all night comforting her
@mamanursetina3 ай бұрын
So sorry to hear that. If it's not working for you you really have to do what's best for you and your little for sure! This is what I recommend from a lactation perspective.

Amazing video and so helpful! I just wanted to double check: if I’m expressing extra milk to then give it to my baby later, why do I have to express again to signal to my body to not stop producing milk? It produced enough so I could express so would pumping more not lead to overproduction? Same if I’m formula feeding 1x day (and want to stay consistent): if I pump whilst giving bottle will that not lead to overproduction? I’m 34w FTM and I find it all so confusing 🙈

I feel like there aren’t any nipples that are slow enough.. I really want to love the lansinoh or the Evenflo because of the nipple shape but they drip so quickly! I understand with paced feeding that drip would be slower, but my let down is SLOW. My first child would not feed at my breast because the flow was way too slow. I need a bottle nipple that is insanely slow but still a good shape like lansinoh and evenflo 😭

@TaelerASMR I have a 3-week old and just switched from size 1 to size premie for the Dr. Brown narrow bottles since my baby girl drinks too fast and keeps choking. We switched her to the slowest flow nipple for a few days now and she's feeding much better and it helps with pacing efforts as well. The Similac nipples they use in the hospital was slow flow and she did well with it before we went home and started using size 1 nipple for her. So we felt comfortable going back to size 0 (premie, even though she's not a premie).

Nurse Tina, I really need your help. I have 8 week old twin boys, born a month early. One of them is really slow to gain, and the Dr. Is pushing formula. I think I've figured out that his latch is poor, and he's getting the fore milk, but not the hind milk. How do I teach him to suck harder? I've been pumping and additionally feeding him with the Lansinoh natural bottle, 2-3 times a day, as well as nursing on demand. I'm also doing paced feeding, and breast compressions while nursing, to keep him Interested (he nurses a short time most of the time). I'm in Hilo, Hawaii, where breast-feeding help is limited. I have been in touch with the OB nurses from our hospital, or are also lactation consultants, but they're too busy. If you can give me any advice, I would really appreciate it!

@mamanursetina3 ай бұрын
Be persistent and patient. Offer it every feed but don't force it too much. And you could try suck training where you use the same nipple on your finger to see if you can get them to latch and suck much like you would on a pacifier to train those muscles.
