I purchased bees from David end of march I installed my package on March 27th I checked on them every 7th day and 3rd time yesterday after two weeks. They’ve filled 7 and half frames within one month they’ve exploded! Only thing I’ve done is fed them constant supply of sugar water. These bees are the most gentlest I’ve ever seen

Always buy two to begin with. You will loose at least one hive your first year. Most loose both. But with two hives you have a better chance to end up with one.

Unless you're looking to make splits, DO NOT put another deep, add a super then queen excluder, then add more suppers for your harvest.

I just got a new Nuc--July 20th--due to an older hive dying out...three frames of brood and two of resources...I had some drawn comb that I placed with those bees. I also added a frame feeder of 2:1 sugar water to promote drawing com in a second brood frame. I will check here in a month...thanks for your videos...

David, that will work in an 8-10 frame box, but the queen needs more frames to lay in than what’s available in a 4-5 frame nuc. I just got into my one month packages and they had lots of nice frames of brood, nectar, and pollen. Of course, they had drawn comb.

Thank you so much for all the useful videos. Quick unrelated question, any suggestions on how to keep large roaches out of the beehive? Im seeing them around and inside the hives and not sure how to deal w them without harming the bees or making the honey bad. Thanks again!

This seems like it would make it hard to detect, the rare occasion, of a non laying queen. I don't believe you wouldn't have time to fix anything in that hive. Such as giving them a new queen or a frame of of brood from another hive.

I struggle being patient with my bees in general. I am learning to take better notes so I can remember what it was like. But it's tough staying patient. I split 2 hives in 5 today and am taking 2 over to a farm in the morning. I let them make new queens, so I shouldn't check for at least 21 days but I be derned if I make it 14 days 😂 Hopefully I learn patience. For new beekeepers it can be good to watch the hive draw comb and expand. It's a whole new world for newcomers.

What about if you start with a 5 frame NUC? Should you still leave them alone for the first month or is it different since with a NUC the bees will be further along in their hive building process?

So many of them will supersede if you don’t get in about the 2/3 week mark and nip the cells…

I just found your channel, thank you for the sound advice. I made a mistake after transferring my NUC. I used a empty box as a hive stand and after a few weeks I believe my queen moved into the empty box with very little wax and no store. How long is too long or is it safe to put her back in the original hive? I found queen cells in the old hive but after two inspections was unable to find a queen. I thought it might be best to just stack the boxes with a piece of newspaper but I'm a newbie wanted some advice? If you have time thank you.

I was wondering why they don't ship brood comb. Does it die too fast without constant care of the workers?

Yes it would chill, and die from lack of warmth.

I got my package early march and was advised to check on them weekly. The queen after being released by the workers from her cage started laying many frames of worker brood, as well as swarm cells (drone brood and queen cups) I feel like had I not checked on their progress 10 days after introducing them to my 8 frame they would have swarmed given a month free time; although this package may have been a special case

Same here. Mine must have been in the nuc box for a while and over populated because they had a queen cell that was about to go hot when I got a chance to check them a couple of days after I got them home.
