In recent days, some people have found that certain places in China have started spot-checking the phones and computers of inbound travelers. According to a report by the South Korean news agency Yonhap on May 10th, a Hong Kong tourist at Shanghai airport was asked by officials to check their phone and even opened the messaging app WeChat to check their conversation history. And this situation is not isolated.

I will never going to have a layover in China ever again. Had it once in 2018 during my family vacation to Thailand and it's such a hassle. First, you have to go through some sort of passport control, fingerprints, and face screen - doing it by yourself. Second, have to go through security check again. And, we are just transit (layover) through Shanghai Pudong airport

In my youth i read lots of dystopian scifi novels of societies where the people was totally controlled and indoctrinated which at the time fascinated me, it seems like china is realizing the fiction i enjoyed reading 50 years ago. As china's economy continuous its decline the need of domestic control increases and the fear of a chinese invasion of taiwan leading to increased political tension with europe and america. Another aspect is the growing interest from china in african countries raw materials where access usually is acheived with empty promises of investments in infrastructure and bribes. It's common in China, now in Hong Kong , Shanghai. Don't think China is another country. CCP(and Xi) wants Taiwan to be the same. CCP knows they are not guilty, CCP does it as a caution to the population..
