When I first started traveling to East Africa people in the U.S. did the same to me. Since I was traveling as a single woman, everyone told me I shouldn't go. They kept telling me how dangerous it is and how Africans don't even like Americans. Of course, I didn't listen. Now 2.5 years later, some of the haters have made their way to the motherland. So far, I've lived in Tanzania, spent time in Rwanda and will soon be going back to Ethiopia to invest and take over an 18 year old NGO. Africa has been better for me than the United States. In fact, its much safer so let them say what they want to say while you live your best life. ❤️

Hey Julian❤. I left a comment in your last video about Uganda, which I guess wasn't well received. You are an inspiration to many, myself included. You are courageous, funny & kind. Its amazing to watch/experience. Your sexuality is the LAST thing that comes to mind,if at all. We just care about your safetly and because we have grown to enjoy you so much over the years, we were anxious about you possibly getting targeted again. I apologise if our concerns brought up feelings of fear and self-doubt. ...with all that being said, I get how frustrating it can be to have limits placed on your life for simply being who you are! I hope you still have the courage to trave the rest of Africa and that you meet good people who will help/protect you along the journey❤❤❤

I appreciate how you always want to give us a chance before placing dangerous and uneducated judgments over our home. However, Africa is a really complicated place with a very complicated history. South Africa is still the only place with clear gay rights codified in its constitution in Africa. I myself have heard so many stories from people around Africa about how they have been harassed and mistreated for being gay. This is a constant struggle they are fighting against with very little compassion given back to them. It’s true that everywhere you will find intolerance but some places in our continent are really dangerous. I once spoke to a guy in Tanzania studying law and he was really going through a lot of internal turmoil. He said to me that he wakes up every morning to work hard at school so that he can one day afford to move to South Africa. In his country if you are caught “being gay” you can be taken to jail for 15 years at most. I can only imagine what everyday life there must feel like for him. Some people are just being assholes on the comments I’m sure. But as a gay man I could never truly be comfortable being in a place that treats people like me like that even if I got unequivocal support while being there. I wouldn’t even want to spend my money, even though I’m an African, enriching a state that treats people like me like that. I really get when you say you’re more than your sexuality and I feel the same. Im in the corporate world and I always work hard to separate myself from being seen only as a gay man but also as a competent man in what I do. I do think that some of those comments are truly to caution us about the world that is outside of our comfortable realities. We want to believe that the world has more than what meets the eye to offer but the truth is that many places just aren’t ready for us yet and that’s messed up but a sad reality. Being thrown in jail for 15 years for being gay is really an extreme form of homophobia. I know you’ll always be safe and I love that you brought this up so eloquently. Love you so much❤❤

Thanks Julian for this video. I'm from SA and even though we are LGBT friendly there are parts of my country which doesn't care about the constitution. If you told me that you were traveling to some deep rural parts of SA alone and had no one to advocate for you upon arrival, my advise was going to be please take precaution. Not because I care about your sexuality but because I care about you, so I must consider it. I've traveled to Uganda and loved the country and would definitely go again. The people were amazing. I've also traveled to a couple of other African countries and I can definitely testify that African people are by far very welcoming. What I hate in Africa is law enforcement. I am scared to death of the police of most African Countries. They are weasels who take advantage of people and will look for reasons to arrest people just to get a bribe. I've been in such situations and luckily had locals speak to them. Since you are not the type of person to travel to a country and only stay in the 'touristy' places, these are the things you may encounter. Unfortunately this continent has a lot of maturing to do in this department and I'm sorry if it comes across as fear mongering but most of the time we the people who live here are on our own when bad sh*t happens. We know how to cope, but we wouldn't want you to face that. Another thing is that even in Africa the media is extremely bias. We also have some really messed up views about each other and what's really going on on the ground. Example, the things President Museveni of Uganda has said in the past about LGBT are hectic, if someone goes off on just that, I can understand why they would caution you. However the president is not the people and the people are nothing like the police. I watched the episode of your travel to Uganda and enjoyed it very much especially when I saw some of the places I visited. I laughed when I saw the traffic because I experienced that too. I wanted you to try the food. I normally eat 2 meals daily and Uganda is the only country where I just kept eating non stop. To be honest I relaxed when you mentioned that you had a contact/friend there. I hope you go back because I definitely plan to and this time with my family. Sorry for the fear mongering. I honestly don't mean to.

It’s sad you didn’t get to enjoy Uganda. Most people with those comments to create fear have never been there. I enjoyed your Kampala downtown tour . I didn’t know how you did it without fearing your camera to be snatched🤗😂. I would have loved for you to visit uptown too plus experience Uganda’s night life. It’s really dope and the people are very respectful and friendly. Next time you want to go back, hit me a line and hook you up to some nice people to show you around 👌🏾🤗

FACTS! I love that you assumed positive intent from the commenters but you are right. You are not just your sexuality. As a gay man myself, I do think of my safety but if I restrict myself based on my inexperience then I am relying on stereotypes and NOT the reality. All you can do is what you are doing and what you are doing is the good work. Thank you for going and showing us that Uganda is safe just like everywhere. The Lord is before you, never fear.

Yeah talk about it, am a Ugandan and I was so much in love with how you were showing the beauty of Uganda, truth is, ugandans are the most free people in East Africa, they mind they own businesses regardless , I believe you do all these travel vlogs like in Uganda particular for free just to show the fun they are missing out, I expected more and was surprised on how short you cut the Uganda adventure..i believe we follow as a mixed community and sexuality shouldn't be involved and we have fun as a family. Please visit Uganda again "please.....!!!" The few days were epic for me and was hurt about the few Uganda episodes.. thou less is better than nothing .much love.

It was probably out of concern not to scare you. If they're from that country it seems they would know best and only wanted to keep you safe. There are plenty of travelers who mention our western way of thinking does not always work when you're abroad. If your instincts led you to leave because you didn't do the research as you stated then you did the right thing.

As a Ugandan; born and raised, I'll tell you that a lot of gay people here are living positive and successful lives. Some have even had their "Happily ever after" here and are going on about with their lives, despite how the media decided to potray the country, because of that one time the president was pressured to criminalise homosexuality, a law which he didn't even want to attach his signature onto. 😳 What if I told you we have pride events 🏳️🌈 here? A well oiled LGBTQIA convension centre🏳️🌈? And did you also know we have several gay-friendly bars🏳️🌈, clubs🏳️🌈, hotels🏳️🌈, schools🏳️🌈, hospitals🏳️🌈, etc🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈🏳️🌈? Of course there are some instances where people could use homophobia to want to take advantage of those they persive as gay, but that barely happens, as most of us here are focused on the hustle called life!😏 So please, we shall be glad to have you back. 😊

Hi Julian, welcome back to Kenya. I hope you have an even better experience in our country this time around. I am glad that your attitude is still positive and that you are choosing not to let negative, fearful comments (even if well-intentioned) prevent you from living your best life. For instance, the reputation that the police in the U.S. have of brutality and racial bias has not prevented me or any Kenyans I know from travelling to your home country. Not to minimise the reputation Uganda has as an unsafe place for LGBT people but you were probably more likely to have been injured/harmed in a car or boda boda accident in those chaotic traffic scenarios you shared in your previous video... Looking forward to watching your next vlogs...🤘
@nomfundongidi74182 жыл бұрын
all the comments were out of concern because you can find more than enough news reports or even videos about queer people being locked up or killed in some African countries for who they are/love. Your channel is def not about your sexuality but is about travel, so sometimes its better to have caution than going there with naivety because we don't wanna hear that you have been locked up or killed because of who you are. We don't judge you but the countries that don't want to accept that people should love whoever they want to.

I was definitely one of those people whose first thought was "be safe in Uganda!"-- when you mentioned going there. They do have horrific history w/LGBTQ+ people, and as a Kenyan/African, I did worry for your safety. UG is generally known (by Africans) as a super-conservative/not-very-open country. That said, as a fellow queer black person, I'd hate to have my sexuality limit the places I visit and explore, so totally understand where you're coming from with this. :)
