When I had a layover as long as yours with Emirates they offered me a hotel with shuttle & a meal card. I'd like to believe this is with all airlines especially when you're a frequent traveller. I saw someone else mention the lounges available at the airport, that's also an option in the case your airline doesn't offer any of the perks I mentioned. After my first international travel I learned that it's wise to pack overnight necessities in the carry on bag because anything can happen e.g. major delays or missed flights, forcing you to spend at least an additional day at your layover location. And I also make sure to pack a light jacket & an extra pair of socks in my carry on just in case the weather is unpleasant in the country I'm spending my layover at. I'm glad you decided to travel back home to be with family during the festive season 💕

Yes, you're right @Aunty Mpho, Emirates has a stopover program which automatically detects when booking your flight if you qualify for accommodation for your layover. I don't think Lufthansa has the same program but there should be info on their website or airport service desk regarding their Welcome Lounge access especially on an intercontinental flight.
