It's easy to think that the way to go is to learn various meanings for different cards, and then apply them in answers. This is not so easy, however. Instead, develop understanding, and you can always apply that, no matter what the question. Here is an example.

@@kristine6996 I think it's a valid type of literary form when a person only says part of a very well-known phrase. An example would be if someone says "There but for the grace of God." We all get the meaning, because we know that the whole thing is "There but for the grace of God, go I." Sometime recently, I was watching tv and one of the actors was trying to decide between keeping something he had, or trying to get something a bit better. He said, "A bird in hand." Because we all know the ending is "...worth two in the bush." Anyway I just wanted to mention this stuff, because it looked like you were correcting what Eiran said as if it was wrong, but it's a technically valid and acceptable form of communication.

When I was taught to read tarot almost 30 years ago, I was told to throw away the booklet that explained meanings and instead, view the image on the card as a scene I'm looking at through a window. What is the scene telling me? Apart from that, understanding the meaning of numbers has been beneficial.

I think that's a good idea because each artist design a deck with different inspiration and meaning. For example, my 10 of cups look a tad different from deck to deck, so I like to see what each card is trying to tell me as opposed to memorizing what 10 of cups mean in general. Plus what message are jumping out that day that the universe wants me to focus on? I believe it's important to lean into what my intuition in picking up on

The cool thing, is that you can apply this with pip cards too! Why are the pentacles placed that way? Which pentacle represents "you" (or the one being read), why are the other pentacles placed that way around them? I absolutely adore how well thought out tarot cards are.

I had a brain flash when I was watching a video of some card decks and one deck the book didn't say "meanings" it said, "possible interpretations." And I thought, the cards don't have (set) meanings. They have possible interpretations. It'd not like a code where 1=A. You can't just match the card to a meaning. You have to interpret it.

When I very first started reading tarot over 18 yrs ago a friend of mine told me to throw the book away. The book with all of those meanings. That was the best advise I ever got. What I did to learn the tarot was every morning before I started my day I pulled a card asking what would happen in my day. I would come home and write down what card I got and everyone that stuck out to me in that day. Even the stuff that didn’t really matter. For those that don't fully understand what is being advised here, it is that your readings should be more instinctive and intuitive, rather than a simple "text book" interpretation. This works very well with runes, pendulums, and any means or devise that requires the user to "speak" for them. No, you can't just make something up, based on your own imagination. You do need a basic knowledge of what the card, rune, or symbol is generally accepted to mean. However, how, exactly, those pieces fit together will vary from one person to the other, and one situation to another. And that's even if the same sequence comes up for different people.

I really like this because I've always seen the seven of swords differently than it is described. It seems everyone sees it as deceit or representing cheating. I just got my first tarot deck ("The Essential Tarot" by Chloé Zarka Grinsnir) and I saw a review for the deck that said "Don't read the book that comes with it for the card meanings, get a journal and shuffle the cards and each card that comes out write down the meaning you feel from it in the journal before reading about the meaning of the card online/in the book"... and I believe that's a great advice because it makes you trust your intuition a lot more and you don't have to force external influences and ideas to fit into how you see the cards.. It's better to look at each card and write down what you think of it and feel from it and letting that be your definition for it first then researching on the cards after to just help with some clarity.. I agree with your video!

It's more useful to know the characteristics of each suit and the symbols rather than meaning of each card. So it would be better to know how the empress feels or Expresses herself rather than the meaning of her card. The meanings limit you. But knowing that an Emperor is cardinal Aries fire energy is very useful, if that makes sense

Beautiful video. Thank you for the advice and th experience. I also once watched a KZbin class about Tarot (in Germany language). It was a bit similar to what you mention here. The lady in the video recommended instead of learning the cards - take the major arcana and just take a look at each card - write down which details you see and what you associate with the card and the symbols in it. In the next step you are called to check which cards of the majors you already experienced in your life - as it is the fools journey. Next step is to take a journey with each card - that means really meditate with the card. For example go into the Fool card - meet him where he is, visualizing you are in the card with him. Walk with him. Ask him who he is and what he has to say. So journey with each card. This honestly helped me a lot to get a better understanding of the cards and the archetypal symbols in it. i consider songs being mentioned (in video or conversation) to sometimes be messages to me from spirit. (by analyzing the words or song itself i find meaning.) this is the second time watching a tarot related video the song "nothing compares to you" live version was mentioned to me. this is a definite message. btw this is beautiful insight. i read tarot, and i initially learned without a guide book , just going off of meanings i get personally from the cards. i find the messages i get are accurate, and sometimes they match up with the guide books! but by trying to be too rigid to the meaning of the card can block an intuitive hint or message that would be very helpful.

Except you combined completely unrelated topics with one tarot card, that has nothing to do with pervert pope or vanity of king from the mentioned tale, or the name of some random song. It should be your personal experience relation. *I agree it's best to develop understanding of a card*, which is done by daily drawing then living out the day and taking notice of the relation between the card and daily experiences- or drawing one card at the end of the day for the main theme of your day. Doing that over again can build up understanding of various aspects of perticular card. For 78 cards to be lived out and understood in that way, takes Years. Afterwards to solidify your understanding, you can live out the day(s), week, or some period of time cycle, and then related to that experience make a drawing of it conecting to one arhetip from 78 cards.

totally agree with you. When I first wanted to learn there were so many meanings for cards I just didnt think all of them could be right. Now I use symbology and numerology of the cards to divine what each mean and as you say my readings are accurate and I put that down to learning by not learning the meanings 🙏🙏

I agree with this but only partially. Art is both the artist and the audience. Each brings some meaning to the situation. I’m Native American and we see the entire world as a “Tarot”. Everything brings a message… anything that crosses or comes a crossed our path in life has meaning and some things the meaning will repeat enough to pick up in a pattern. This pattern can often match the experiences of others around you but then it can be person too and not match up with anyone else around you. This correlates with our design. We have a formula but within that formula we are not following an exact blueprint and we are unique and so our perception and experience is also unique. The artist had an experience as the art was exiting them to the platform they use and this is valid for them and possibly others. The audience who views this may find helpful hints for themselves in that experience, may experience a new inspiring idea or concept through the artists interpretation that can be helpful to them (though not necessarily so), but it should never be set in stone. Like-wise as we journey through life symbols can chance or enhance in meaning. These messages grow and change with us. So it’s helpful to learn how others used and image or read an image, but you have to take the meat and leave the bones. What aligns or resonates with you, carry that for a time and be willing to shed it and adapt it to personalize it for you. It’s an ongoing relationship. Not a religious text with rigid standards. The other issue which is not part of my culture that I see as a problem here is the concept of hierarchy. It causes a lot of garbage between people and it’s a lie. The concept of hierarchy has no other purpose but to set a stage for power. Anyone who approaches you with an attitude or idea which aligns with hierarchy… they are not trying to help you. We cannot find our own relationship with the world (or the cards) from others. We can only see how they impacted someone else and look within to see if that’s a good fit or if something different fits. No one can tell you who you are or what’s true for your journey. You already carry that inside. We take the journey in an individualized body and we leave here without others. Our perception is unique. No one else’s idea is as valid to your own journey as your own is to your journey. So he has it right, to a degree. You learn a much more thorough lesson figuring things out on your own. There’s great empowerment to that. However it takes a great deal of time and a human only lives just so long. So it doesn’t hurt to take others’ ideas into consideration to see if any of them help you or makes sense to you. Sometimes it can help speed things up. Just remember to leave the bones behind. If it doesn’t fit, right, feel right or look right, it doesn’t mean it’s not valid. It just means it’s not a good fit for you. Someone else’s truth is still valid for them. Just recognize that that part is personal for them and carry what works for you.

In the beginning of my tarot practice I tried to almost only do intuition but it's really tricky because you can fool yourself. For example I always got the Page/Princess of Cups when asking about this specific dude and I thought it meant that he was the Page but in the end I realised that I was the real Princess, a hopeless romantic. And I just wanted to be liked by someone who clearly doesn't like me. And when I looked up the Thoth meaning of it everything made more sense. And many more things etc etc. But I find it hard to verbalise or understand the meaning sometimes and then it can be quite helpful to look up the meaning. TL:DR; reading by intuition is the best but it's easy to fool oneself so ... I guess practice intuition.

Think it's not a bad idea to know the cards general meaning, but you're right. To read intuitively, you must bond and make your own connections with each card. I pulled the Queen of Swords the other night and started singing Keep your Hands to yourself by Georgia Satellites 😂😂😂

Great video. Although I personally find learning the meanings of each card useful I do think its more beneficial to reflect and meditate on each card and to read more instinctively.
