Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals' 7-2 win over the Red Sox on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals have continued to swing the bats well recently, racking up a ton of hits as every player in the lineup came up with at least one base knock on Saturday.
But most importantly, they came through with a clutch late rally in order to seal the deal and set up another sweep chance for Sunday afternoon at Busch.
We talk Liberatore getting set for that contest as well as Miles Mikolas' outing from Saturday. Plus, thoughts on Oli's bullpen management in the win and how important it was that Ryan Helsley was again not needed to win a game.

This is early May 2023. I remember after the horrific season, they had a great stretch, and everyone was calculating how long it would take them to get back to leading the division before they proceeded to collapse and sold at the deadline. What have we been saying? Is it offense, is it pitching, is it goldenado, is it the young talent, is it manager, is it front office, is it coaching? What answer did we come up with? Its systemic, was consistently the answer, almost everything is wrong was the answer. Either everybody will have to eat their words and everyone was wrong or this is a short lived moment and they'll go back to systematically failing. I wish I had more faith but I dont think a few games is evidence at all that everything was fine the whole time, we all saw an organization on fire, but it was totally fine and this is a competitive team.

I'm reserving my opinion on this until they face Baltimore. Remember, Boston was one of the teams hitting as poorly as we were, but their starting pitching was really strong. But the last couple of weeks their pitching has been breaking down and lead to a losing streak. It's nice to be hitting better but it's been against two of the staffs that are struggling right now.

Another great win.. Miles and the Pen were great and our hitters are pretty much all continuing to contribute. We're heating up. These other teams had better not let us hang around. If the offense continues to be hot I'll bet everyone apologizes to Ollie and Turner Ward.😂

A question that keeps coming up for me…..if the fans mostly agree that Mo is at fault for a weak rotation and picking the wrong player to trade/keep, why does Marmol need to go? Seems like he’s a good leader, has the players on his side and makes the common sense calls. Most of the time, of course. I feel like the Marmol anger isn’t rational.

I'm reserving judgement until after the Orioles and Cubs. If the Offense can continue to produce I'll head toward the hopeful end of the spectrum. Honestly, when they went 9 under 500 I was about ready to throw in the towel. I wasn't sure they could dig their way out a hole that deep. But they made great headway, and the bats are starting to come to life, so I'm heading toward hopeful.

The last two games have been so much fun to watch and bring back that feeling about the Cardinals that we all miss and long for, but last ye forget, Boston is a pretty crappy team too. And I agree with @felix… whatever the problem is, it’s still there (personally I think it’s the coaching and front office). However, I will be more than happy to eat my words if we start playing like this against the better teams in the league.

That game followed their original plan of offense covering any pitching shortages. Scoring always makes the game fun to watch. 40,000 fans showing up says that they don't care about being laughed and ignored by ownership and front office. It's interesting that we are 7 games back of the Brewers, which is exactly how many we lost head to head to Milwaukee. The offense will do a lot to move us up in the division and make it more exciting to watch. BIG MO can continue to be smug with a we know better than you attitude. He best pull a deadline trade for a real stud pitcher to complete in any playoffs.

I hate to knock your premise early on about two steps forward and one step back, as a fan it sometimes feels incredibly frustrating to watch. But going 5-4 in every 9 game stretch throughout the season equates to a 90 win season. Again, not the most fun, but it would be a playoff team.
@bschaeffer12
@bschaeffer12 28 күн бұрын
Hey Austin, I totally hear you but what I was trying to demonstrate is that for this team it's not quite enough to make up for the hole they dug. If they hadn't started so poorly it would be more than enough but it sorta feels like they need to do a little more to get back to .500 before settling into a pace like that

I'm not ready to say they're back but we'll see. The orioles will be a test. They are legit. We need to get hits with risp more.

This is the team many of us expected, and doing this without Walker. Kids hitting .323, .838 OPS albeit without a HR in Memphis. Hoping Kenyan will be effective when activated. Go Cardinals. Jo Jo has gotten hit up in his last 4 appearances. Hoping it, just like Sonny’s struggles are just a glitch. This was the 2nd good start in a row for Mikolas. Kitteridge back on the beam. And, yea, I still think we have the most talent in the Central. “Vocal minority.” Moz continues to be cringe. Hopefully he will grow up some day. Indeed. We 🩸 Cardinals. In my case, for 65 years. Thanks for bringing g us these. All the best.

I’m not getting my hopes too high…this team has fooled me a few times that they were turning it around…last 2 nights have been fun though. That being said, can’t stop beating the drum on turning around player development and moving into the 21st century with a pitching lab. That issue doesn’t go away if this team turns it around.

But that’s not it at all, I don’t think. I think 97% are dying for another WS, the “Sea of Red”, the Clydesdales. With Whitey’s passing it would really be so poignant to see the El Birdos celebrating at home, in St. Louis. LFG!

If we want to sweep the Red Sox, why do we do dumb stuff like put up the B team for the third game? Goldie is the first baseman. Not second, not short stop. Nado plays third. Nowhere else. Those two play every game in their positions. They are no spring chickens. So why don't we have one short stop that plays every game? Do we not have anyone who can play that position every game? Why is Noot everywhere? So where are our nine players that become proficient in ONE POSITION????
@MGillDesign
@MGillDesign 27 күн бұрын
Agree wholeheartedly. And why move Donovan out of leadoff spot down to 7? He and Nootbaar have chemistry at 1 and 2. Leave it alone. Why start Liberatore? He has failed as a starter, but they keep trying to make him one. Leave him where he had success (long relief)... Marmol just loves to destroy momentum and has to get cute, with his lineup shuffling and defensive alignment (musical chairs)
