Well, something that bothers me is when you're accused of 'copying' someone else's art style. To draw in a style, your brain takes things it's seen before, and combines them. Kasey for example. I have two artstyles- one more chibi, and the other more detailed. Though, in my chibi style, I use triangular shaped feet. People who know Kasey are constantly saying; "That's how Kasey does her feet! That's cooopppppyyyyiiiiiiinnnnnnngggggg!" While, really, it makes the style more simplistic, which I love. And in both styles, the eyes look a lot like Adam's from doodle date. My point is, if one single attribute of the art is similar, it doesn't make it copying.

Ogopogo WhyCan'tMyLastNameBeRawrXD I do that myself x'3 If you expand and look at many different kinds of art, you'll pick up on more different neat techniques. As long as it's you're own twist or preference, it shouldn't be stealing.. even if it feels that way sometimes or people make you feel that way

Ogopogo WhyCan'tMyLastNameBeRawrXD Yeah same here. I started doing circle eyebrows as I has seen someone do it online, I posted it on social media and gots loads of hate about the eyebrows. Kasey does the eyebrows as well (just noticed), but I started doing lines. Meh, I don't draw much but I am planning a big thing.

Everytime i see a video/post like this i dont really know what to think Is really easy to say "Don't follow trends! Be yourself! Be original" But when you have an artstyle that IS generic by nature is hard to take this advices Because, what i am suppose to do? Do i have the change the way i draw in order to be original and popular? or should i be "myself" and just keep drawing the way i like? But if i do that, that means no one is going to notice my art? I dont know what to do, is like people are telling to be "myself" unless "myself" is not special enough I think that for now i am going to keep doing my boring artstyle... Even if that makes me a basic bitch, at least i am going to be a happy one
@tiquismistica9417
@tiquismistica9417 6 жыл бұрын
Sleepy C. As long as you like your own art style is fine! I think she meant that you don't have to force yourself to draw the "generic" artstyles because they are popular. Everyone has different tastes... + in the end, the more you draw, the more you get to improve and change the style to something that it'll be YOUR style.

I think what she meant is that you shouldn't change your artstyle because of others, that if you do change your artstyle it's because you want to do something new and that if you don't want to change your artstyle then that is okay ^^ At least that is what i got from it ^^

Sleepy C. You could try mashing other people’s art styles because eventually it will develop into your own and not even look similar or that similar to the ones you mashed together. I still don’t have my art style but you can’t give up. You will find it. Just play around with shapes and sizes, nose and no nose, blocky and round. Anything that helps you.

My style is actually like that....once my mom came into my room and saw my drawing, she just said "You do like to round things up, don't you?". I was shocked because I never realized it. She said I always make the faces rounder than the actually are and even my shoulders are half circles. I never drew boxy characters and I'm currently testing that style on hands for my chibi drawings. Too much information, I'm sorry if it's uninteresting.

This kind of "Be Yourself!!!!" thing is so easy to say when you have a unique style. I've described my style as "the one parents look at and go 'IS THAT ANI-MAY?'". My best friend (and fellow artist) was talking about art styles with me and they mentioned that they thought my style was "too stiff" and then showed me an art account whose style they thought "Made sense for [me]". It... Really hurt, honestly. It felt like they thought I should change my art style to this person's because they didn't like mine. They elaborated that it just reminded them of me but... it didn't sound that way. I can understand constructive criticism, but this just felt like "your style should be like THIS instead!" Sorry about the rant, I just needed to get this out...

Dont take influance from cartoons or anime than. I used to do that when I was young (draw inspiration from anime), until i realized how much of a crutch it was becoming. Don't focus on style, and draw from life, because the only way you can improve is through observation and repetition. If you are young, you should focus on developing your technical skills and the speed of which you draw. You shouldn't feel butt hurt because your friend they gave you criticism. They were clearly trying to help you. The life of an accomplished artist is all about checking one's ego, because being too comfortable with one's skills spells the end of their artistitic career. Always draw, always self improve, check your ego. At the end of the day, your feelings don't matter if your art fails to convay the message you want to sell people, same goes for writing and film. If you have a problem with that, dont show people your art.

I'm late and I don't know the full story, but that person who criticized your art may have been talking more about the POSING than the style itself. Stiff posing looks pretty much objectively bad and there are ways to improve it WHILE keeping a nice style. I suppose stiff posing CAN be a stylistic choice, but that's honestly an awful stylistic choice... She may have also been talking about anatomy. Even in a cartoony or unrealistic style, you need to understand bone structure, muscles and proportions to make drawings look stylistically nice and believable. Just google "(creature that you wanna draw, ex dog) anatomy" and there will be plenty of bone and muscle charts. I totally get the idea of liking a style and drawing should make one happy. But if you're trying to make really good AND stylized art, you need to learn the rules before you break them. And I think that person was just trying to give advice rather than say your art is bad. Again, I perfectly understand you wanting your art to be specifically what you want and for it to be uniquely you. I've been there. Now do understand, I don't know the full situation so everything I just said could be entirely irrelevant. What "stiff" is defined by make's a huge difference, but also who the criticize-er was and what s/he was trying to do, whether this was in a middle school cafeteria or a professional university class, etc... But if what you're doing is making you happy, then don't mind what others say. Drawing for fun is totally acceptable and whether someone likes or dislikes your art shouldn't affect that. (I don't mean to come across as rude btw, I'm not great at wording...) Edit: tl;dr The friend may have been referring to the posing rather than the style and probably didn’t mean it to be offensive. It’s ok to draw for fun (and then errors and inconsistencies won’t matter), but in the art world you need to learn to accept criticism regarding style, posing, proportions and etc. I tend to word things in a rather blunt or mean way even when I’m trying not to, so sorry if I come off as rude.

I don’t like anime and never will because it’s not what I like and doing what you like is all that matters in art because in art THERE IS NO RIGHT WAY! And those fellow friends of yours may say ohhhhhhh I’m good at art because I don’t draw stiff I draw Solf you know when you are an artist that doesn’t care about styles and stuff like that you just like art that is what a friendly artist will do

Matthew Fox ok, there are some things I agree with, but some of the things that we're just wrong. First, work on technical skills, yes. Speed at which you draw. No. Patience is key when creating art. More time on a piece of art isn't bad, if anything can be positive. Room for improvements and detail. That part didn't make any sense to me. Second. The friend was trying to help. Yes. Did she? No. She gave bad advice from subject she clearly had no qualification for answering because trying to copy someone's art style issss....in this sinerio not helpful. Thirdly. "Your feelings don't matter if your art doesn't sell a feeling?" What is your definition of art? That if it doesn't sell a feeling, it's not art? .....and then don't show ur art to----- ok, honey, showing your art to people is fine, if anything, it's good for exposure reasons. Do expect critism though, but just know that you can't make everyone happy. You think Snoopy or Idk, SpongeBob make EVERYONE laugh, no, of course not. Matthew is right to look to anime for inspiration but he doesn't make it clear that realism will help u do expand your knowledge of art and expand your limits to what you can draw. Then will your art style improve.

The problem with comparing art styles is that everyone's taste is different. The things that inspire them are different. We all see the world differently. People should embrace their style of art, but maybe that person's art is round and bubbly. Anyway, not trying to throw shade. I just think comparison is poison in the art community and that it's better to enjoy one another. Even if someone else's art seems basic to you.

Lots of young artists are definitely concerned with finding their style and don't really know where to go. While it is a disservice to a young creative person's art for them to adopt another creator's style entirely, that also doesn't bar them from doing studies and "trying on" other hats while they explore how they want to render! I think that's an important thing some folks miss, that (with credit, of course) doing one or two studies of a bunch of different art styles can teach them a lot about how they might want to put together their own images.

It is really funny because, when I looks at my older art I can see exactly who or what I was watching because my art is visibly influenced by them. Right now I take a lot of inspiration from you and lots of other animators/artists who I look up to! Obviously it has turned into my own style over time, but I started out doing art (about 2 years ago) copying JaidenAnimations and Spibbles/Spoon (I don’t know the channel name anymore) screen shots. Now I take inspiration from you and also my own self! I have improved to a point where I am comfortable with my style but I can still improve! Wow that was long, tldr: I love ya kasey, and I take so much inspiration from you.

Charis M - I'm in my early twenties and I've been playing video games since I was two years old. I played the original Pokémon but not 'Pokémon' Go, because I heard all you have to do to catch a Pokémon is throw a Pokéball at it... You don't even have to weaken them first anymore. :(
@ChildOfAnAndroid

Kyrst O'Keefe I played original up to fire red etc, and play pokemon go now. Long term poke fan and we're probably a similar age :) pokemon go is pretty crap. It's a crash machine with little to no game play, for me personally it helps me with my anxiety/autism (sorry for bringing it up I feel cringy) issues about going outside and to shops etc, as it acts as a motivating distraction and added reason to go outside. You just catch pokemon that come up and get poke balls from certain places, it'd certainly not a pokemon game. In terms of weakening pokemon, all you do is throw berries so they're easier to catch. But you do weaken and fight pokemon to take ownership of gyms. I loved the old games much much more, and still play them from time to time. But they both have their uses. The handheld games of our youth were great for relaxing on and playing like a video game, pokemon go appeals to a wider market including children, families (as it's kind of a cooperative game, in some cases if you have more people you can catch legendary pokemon) and adults with a busy work life and no time to really game. You can play on the walk to work or whatnot. Sorry for the rant!

OH god this. I'm a pokemaniac and it was considered childish to like Pokemon before go. But after go, it's totally cool and hip "so 90's" fucking hell. Like I have been playing pokemon since my childhood and have played every single main series game (expect platinum if that even counts since I have played diamond and pearl) and now everyone is suddenly a "pokemon fan" when they can barely tell a difference between Mareep and a Zubat. It makes me cringe whenever people call themselves the biggest pokemon fans and still think that Charizard is a dragon type or think that such pokemon as Bastiodon doesn't exist "because it's not in go!!!1!"

hahaha. I thought that but then was like, "oh shoot did she think i meant the actual background?!" Anyway, it's in your shapes and shadows--how clean and blocky they all are--especially in how stark your shadow and light color variations are (I'm thinking specifically of your "trying posca pens" piece). All your figures feel like you work from shapes, rather than scrawling sketches--in blocks of color that feels more like a digital piece.

I think it's 10/10 ok if you are a new artist to copy someone's art style. It helps you learn what you like and what you don't. Eventually, you should branch off, but at first it's ok. And it's fine to see a particular way someone draws something and take inspiration from it (like the tie-dye shirt)

It's exactly videos like this that has helped me be myself with my style, I used to just try copying other styles thinking that's how it was supposed to be. Every time my current style started to sneak through it got criticised (making me regress it back to a style I didn't even like drawing!) Now that I'm comfortable doing my style, I love drawing way more. It's good to try different styles and see what you like, not just going with the flow of what other people want you to do It's great to see videos encouraging people to create their own style, to be unique in their creation.

👏👏 Well said chica I totally agree! I been struggling with my own style for a while since I broke away from art( due to life changing Circumstances) for several years, returned and then got stuck in a loop of drawing what other people wanted because that was the only thing that sold locally ( ugh light houses,oceans and typical pop culture). I used to make up my own characters and stories but now trying to reshape my ideas so they are free and of my own! Keep up your amazing work!!

this is kind of confusing for me. i really love the idea of sticking with your personal aesthetics and stuff and standing out, but isnt taking inspiration from other things you like still being true to yourself anyways? i view taking inspirations from different types of art a good way to add to and develop your own style. if i like 9 artists a lot, then i think i could totally take inspiration from each and combine different aspects of their styles and it will turn into something unique. i dont think you *have* to stand out, but if thats what you would like, then it is a good idea to stick to your own aesthetics, and in my opinion, it is more fun that way (it would feel wrong for me to choose a way of art that is not a part of what i appreciate).

I think the problem is that when you use other art styles as a crutch, you don't develop as an artist. Often times, the people who obsess over style don't draw from life, which becomes a hindrance in the long run, and generally don't make work with any substance.

oihane Try looking at some of your favorite artists, and see how they draw. I got my art style from looking at LavenderTowne's and JaidenAnimations. I just doodle around with a mix of very cartoony, to semi-realistic. I also looked at some of my friends art, and that helped me a lot too. Just try to mess around and see what works for you!

I think what's so cool about art is that theres no "right" or "wrong" way to do it. Everyone is unique. Even if you have the same style as somebody else, theres always a hint of uniqueness there. Like for example- I have a friend who likes to draw people who are very aesthetically pleasing and perfect looking. I like to draw characters that area bit harsh and less pleasing to the eye, but our styles are also similar in a way. So really, there's so much variety in almost everybodys art. I really love this vid (and also your drawing) I think its explained nicely :)

But..."Round and bubbly" is my style...What can i do to stand out? I mean, i'm not trying to be popular or "blend in", im just being myself. I've tried to change my style to something more geometric, but it just isn't me. I get what you're trying to say in this video, but i don't think if lots of people's styles are similar makes them "basic". True, that is the popular style nowadays, but because so many people are using it in animations and drawings, aspiring artists like myself see that, and it's sort of fed into our brains. I mean if the majority of the art you see is one thing, then you're going to start drawing in something like that style. That's kind of how trends form.

Don't worry, I have a very different style to people I know. They all draw anime and manga characters but I draw my own, unrealistic style that has enough real to look real but its nowhere near enough to look real (don't worry if you don't understand what I mean). I love drawing and music, so I combine them in my drawings; a mouth that's got piano keys instead of teeth, a cat that has musical notes written down its back, I even have a drawing of a blank musical stave being bullied by full concertos. I just love all things music and that's my style. Like you said, if you follow someone else's art style, who will follow you?
