I actually used Zorin OS when building a PC for my younger cousin. He was previously a Windows user but the budget was tight for the PC so I proposed trying Linux out and spending the extra Windows money on better hardware. He agreed. I told him that at whatever point when he feels like he wants to switch back to Windows - I'll help him out with that. He's been running Zorin for like 3 months and so far never asked to go back to Windows. Stuff just works, most games he plays work great on proton. There's been a few instances I had to help him and show him a few terminal tricks to make his life easier, but it seems that he doesn't mind as 99% of things are accessible from the GUI. ZorinOS is not my personal choice as a long time Linux user, but it's amazing for newbies.

While I don't use ZorinOS now, it was the distro that actually converted me over to using Linux again. For so many years I was fed up every time I tried a distro as there was certain basic things that just didn't work - like grabbing the edge of a window and trying to resize it, file managers being screwy, my network shares hard to access, VLC not playing videos etc. ZorinOS was the one a few years back that made me think "Oh OK, so you can do this stuff on Linux and it does work". It's not perfect and definitely suited to more simple users, but it's attractive and just works. A Windows user would feel right at home using this distro - minus all the crap that goes along with Windows. The main reason I didn't continue with it was because (like most Ubuntu distros), the apps were quite old and couldn't get some I use from the repos and the kernel wasn't new enough when I tried to install it on my new laptop, so switched to something else instead. I may give it another whirl in the future,

Have been running Zorin on a laptop for my dad for a while now, have to say I'm really impressed how well it works for my dad who never touched something in the realms of Linux. If they can keep this quality up and iron out the noob-friendly bugs (After 3 weeks some applications in the Software store wouldn't update anymore and were stuck in this never-able-to-update-or-remove state which needed to be resolved in the terminal) then this could be the perfect distro to jump to when coming from Windows.
@frankhuurman39552 жыл бұрын
Something I still often run into is that after having used the OS for a few days without rebooting, the updates in the Software store just stop working(infinite "looking for new updates(this might take a while)" loop). I actually got the question from my dad why there were never any updates but those updates popped up immediately after a reboot. So something in the software store isn't fully foolproof yet. Also something with heavy battery-drain on a closed/suspended laptop(Dell XPS 13) but that might be hardware related.

My dad was running the laptop again the past 10 days, and just ran into another unable-to-update issue. Installing updates failed: snap has no updates available. @Bad Taste For me the sound worked out of the box. I had installed it on a laptop though just for a couple of weeks. Not having Microsoft Office was a big no for me. Also, I missed 3 fingers swipe gesture to adjust volume level. The other distros are even worse.
@albatross72 жыл бұрын
@Bad Taste Your install option was just fine. I always choose to install third party drivers, proprietary software etc. because I just want my stuff to work. I don't care if they are open source or not. I guess the problem might be that the linux kernel doesn't support your sound card. Linux doesn't have the concept of "drivers" like on Windows. Everything is baked into the kernel. New hardware comes into the market, bake support for it into the kernel. It just keeps piling up. I find this method fundamentally flawed and bloat at best. Did the sound work when you installed Ubuntu?

yeah good description of it. Has a few bugs, outdated but solid and clear enough to use for people that step in from win/mac. Most of the bugs can be solved by a reboot.

@@frankhuurman3955 yes. No bugs were unsolvable. Except the last one, it was solvable but i was too noob to do it (login loop bug).. Made me switch to fedora

I recently been a distro hopper, but for now I stopped at Zorin. I realy is nice and well ballanced, easy to use. I'm not a person that is in to all the stuff off setting everything up syself. It's nice that this system comes out of the box with a lot off usefull things. Would I say tha every windows user is going to love this as a alternative, I'm not shure, I think its come a long way but still need to get that extra mile to fully get at pase with windows. But it is a good try. Greetings from Belgium.

To be fair, running sudo apt upgrade installs the latest Firefox (102).

Me: a guy who is about half a year into using Linux. Started with Pop_OS!, had very good time and a month ago jumped to Arch based EndeavourOS due to hearing so much good abour Arch in general. Also me: First time hearing about ZorinOS. I know I am just one guy and this anecdotal, but I am pretty confident that distrowatch is not exactly credible in these matters.

I have had too many problems to count dealing with the zorin os store.

@@dreaper2087 like updates not appearing anymore(stuck in an infinite looking for updates loop) and taking ages to search for an application in the store. At least those were my experiences recently

@@dreaper2087 doesn't take away the fact that I really like Zorin though! :) But I've seen some posts on their forum about it as well so it might affect people randomly (my infinite store loop happened on a clean install with just 3 applications installed from the software store). But it might just be a Gnome or Ubuntu thing that's ruining it for Zorin as well.
@frankhuurman39552 жыл бұрын
@@dreaper2087 Might as well be but I'm on a Dell XPS 9370 from barely a few years old and Manjaro Gnome didn't have these kind of problems so to me it seems like a Zorin thing. And you wouldn't believe it but yesterday I had a store issue again after using Zorin for a couple of days. Trying to update through the store, I get a "something went wrong, the name :1.104 was not provided by any .service files" notification. Hopped to the terminal to apt update and it shows me a massive amount of updates that I thought the store would've updated as well the past few days. Now I'm just stuck with that warning each time I open the software store and I have no idea what's triggering it so will have to do some digging.

@@dreaper2087 seems to be a gnome-software / fwupd compatibility thing, found this in journalctl: `gnome-software[2004]: not GsPlugin error FwupdError:10: The name :1.104 was not provided by any .service files`

Zorin is nice, but it's just Ubuntu with Arc Menu and Dash to panel extensions, is it not?

I built a PC out of parts I have collected. I put a Asrock mini ATX B450 MB, Ryzen 1600 CPU, 32g Ram, and RX 580 GPU in a case and am going to use it as my Paid Zorin Test box. I am going paid due to your video and the one that used the paid version to which showed all the apps that came preinstalled in it. That would save a lot of time in installing things worth the $40. What I really want to do is 2 things 1st is to see how many of my windows apps that I own to run on Linux. 2nd to install a cut down version of windows 11 on a virtual box and see how the windows apps run on that. I was able to build a PC and install a cut down version of windows 11 on it. Not sure how long that will last due to updates putting back all the things I removed. Microsoft forgot an OS is just about something that shared the recourses to the programs you install on the PC and should not be seen unless called. Like hitting the windows key or the Print Screen key. No telemetry or give access to unwanted things like news feeds and advertisements.

i have tried and installed all Linux distributions for about two years and then I left Windows the results of those experiments are: zorin is the best Linux distribution ever (stable, you get everything and you don't need an external source they already add flatpak and snap, it uses a small amount of RAM and cpu...etc) manjaro in second place (they have an excellent application manager) worst Linux distro is fedora (they give you nothing but shit thanks for flatpak, guess what ? they have dumbest installer on the plant)
