"An accent is just somebody speaking _your_ language with the rules of _theirs._" Perfect! He put it into words!
@Targivod
@Targivod 3 жыл бұрын
It’s not true for every accent though. For example, it’s not true for British and American accents, those are just plain English, they’re not fundamentally influenced by another language.
@justanawkwardnerd
@justanawkwardnerd 3 жыл бұрын
@@Targivod I would argue that it IS - English, as a language, is BUILT from OTHER languages. It's a derivative and collection of rules belonging to preexisting languages, and even if it wasn't, cultures and peoples influence each other all the time. I think that saying that accents are not an example of that - even for people that speak the same language, is fundamentally incorrect. Dialects, in their own right, are also separate languages. If what you said was really the case, then there is no reason for dialects to exist within a singular language - that English has no reason to have different rhythms - and god-forbid _rules_ for it's supposed to be the same. I mean, British English and American English follows different rules and sounds differently. Maybe it's not because one is influenced by French and the other by East Coast Native tribes, but that doesn't change the fact that these changes happened, and may have happened for those reasons. If nothing else, the US has a different culture than Britain, even with their shared history. That shows up in our spelling, so why not in our auditory expression of the language?
@Targivod
@Targivod 3 жыл бұрын
@Faith Mwaura I totally agree with you on that. I just meant that an accent isn’t always the product of someone speaking one language, speaking another and putting its rules in it, like Trevor said. It is for South Africa, India and so on, but not for America and England for example, since those people always spoke English.

I understand the accent thing too well. I grew up Afrikaans (not by choice, hahaha) and my Mom is German. So I grew up speaking Afrikaans with a German accent, and by the time I got fluent in English, people thought I was English because of my German accent! 🤣When I speak to people who have another language here in South Africa, I speak English with my slight German accent and people understand me. And out of the blue they switch to Afrikaans! Like, how did they know😂? Maybe I should start with "Guten Tag. Wie Gehts?" 😂🇿🇦

This video is alittle more indepth than that and im hear to tell u that trevor has atleast 6 diffrent "white south african" accents.. mayb you havent spent enough time with south africans but accents change in every province, real south africans know this and trevor can sound like hes from alll 9 provinces and thats the key to his comedy.. im dead serious, trevor has at least 20 south african accents, take ur "white/black/ coloured" accents and multiply them by 9 provinces.... very very very complex thing to do.

@@BrinK-s Not just that but the European French can be incredibly cruel to anyone that has a different French accent than theirs. My grandma had friends from a french community in Northern Ontario who vacationed in Paris once. They were treated so badly because of their accents that they never returned to visit France. The catch is, many of those same French who criticize others' accents don't even speak another language without an accent either.

@@mish375 Careful, Parisian French are jerks and are well known for that ! Even in France itself. I live in south west of France, and not so much people will tell you they like Paris and its inhabitants around here ! For them, their way of speaking is the norm. Where most of true parisians don't understand how it is to live in medium or small cities ! For them, going outside Paris is considered going in a rural place, like it's the countryside !
@mish375
@mish375 Жыл бұрын
@@BrinK-s Sadly, they give all of France a bad reputation. I'm sorry to say that France's reputation on friendliness here in Canada...it's not good. I think the only big city in France I've heard of that's chill to outsiders is Marseilles. But that could be because it's a port city and used to different accents due to trade. Basically my grandma's friend said she had never been treated so badly anywhere she had ever been as she was treated in France. She said in Paris they were treated like backwater hillbillies that were uneducated. She left with the impression that she should have just communicated in English. In fact, she told me that I should never attempt to speak French with any European French person if I ever visit the country. She said if she was treated badly, then I (who am trying to learn French) will be treated even worse. I certainly have trouble with my accent and speaking as they don't focus on that in Canadian schools. But I can get by with reading/writing. Nowhere near perfect, but it's better than nothing, I guess. From what I was told: pretend you know no French at all because everyone speaks English there anyways and you'll be treated much better. Sheesh, it sounds like Paris is the same issue we have with Québec here in Canada. Even the non-Québec Francophones say they're @ssholes. They aren't the whole country, am I right?

My Australian mum never lost her accent, and my dad lived much of his life in the American south, so I grew up hearing accents. Naturally, I learned to pronounce some words with either accent and others took on a combination of both. Even now, I’ll sometimes be asked where I’m from because the listener can’t place my “accent”. I love hearing how people from different places speak. It makes the world seem like the most wonderful party, a party everyone wants to attend.

Totally relate. Moved to Oz nearly 20 years ago with my mixed NM/Tx/Tn accent and have tried and tried to lose it. I so want to speak Aussie like an Aussie. It ain't gonna happen. I have managed to modify it enough so people are not quite sure if I am a Yank or Canadian, so there is still hope.

I'm Australian, but the vast majority of voices I hear throughout my day.. are American (US). Due to the internet primarily. So I say a lot of words the American way, and my pronunciation is a weird mix.. sometimes people think I'm Canadian.. or English. It's certainly not your usual Australian accents (but on the spectrum, it's to the "cultured" side). My girlfriend is the same. It's interesting, because this is people growing up, all over the world. So it will be interesting to see how this changes accents around the world, in many years to come. It will get more and more noticeable too, since then others in their own country won't sound quite like they used to. So it won't just be from the internet.

@@Siberius- My Old Fella and I were only a few weeks away from our wedding and my joining him in Oz when I discovered that he was also an immigrant. He had arrived from Germany when he was in his early 30's as a "30 mark Kraut", the equivalent of a "10 pound POM", but his accent has no taint of the German, except when he cusses. He was so determined to be Australian that he joined Rostrum, and that enabled him to train himself to the point where even other Germans question his claim of being one. It can be done. NW WA is so varied in it's population origins that if you meet 2 people with the same accent you can be sure they are siblings.

I'm South African and have now lived in the States for 25 years and I've still got my accent. I'm proud. I friend of mine came to visit for 2 weeks and she had an "American " accent😁😁😁

I love that his jokes are references to South African culture but even as an American not knowing the specifics they're no less funny 😂😂

If you humor them it fulfills such a fantasy that your charisma increases like crazy. I'm Swedish so I get asked "how do you people pronounce IKEA?" Then they are super disappointed because it doesn't sound exotic. 😂 Then I get asked if the names on furniture are real words. IKEA has become a part of my identity here in the US lol

@@AmbiCahira ugh that's so annoying. I guess your other choices were Elsa and the girl with the Dragon Tattoo? At least you were not born two or three decades earlier. Then the question was are you on the Swedish Bikini Team. To this day iDK if it was a joke on a comedy show or if there ever actually was a swedish bikini team. And if so, who did they play against? Was it a full contact sport?

This is so true! I had always felt attracted to some accents that sounded good, even if I didn't speak the language. Now that my Enlgish is at level B1 or B2, I got familiar with the most used accents in the language and I'm fascinated. They all sound so pretty! That even happens with my own language, Spanish, different accents have some weird unexplainable charm to me
