One old rancher/farmer I knew carried an old 30-30 in his beat up farm truck. He favored an old low end scope mounted on it with an easy switch to remove it. He often shot it using the open sites. He kept a box or two of ammo in the glove box but Loose ammo could be found on his truck seat, in the cup holders, on the dash and scattered on the floor boards. I’ve seen him drop coyotes from 100 yards several times with that rifle using the scope but I have no doubt he could have done it without it too. He never hunted, though he had plenty of deer on his properties. He did allow an occasional Hunter but it was always kin and never more than one deer. He ran poachers off many times and called the local game wardens so much they all had his name and number on speed dial. “His Deer” knew him by sight and the sound his truck made as it traveled through his farm. He would park his truck close to where he had planted deer feed and they would often graze close enough to his truck for him to toss corn to them. He seldom did target practice unless his boys were doing so too, but I Never saw him miss any shot. After my divorce from his daughter it got a bit weird for me to visit him so (sadly) I lost touch. He died some years later and I still miss the times I road around in his truck with him helping with farm chores. I don’t miss the ex at all.

Every SHTF circumstance can be different. Factoring in age, strength, health in general, etc. can greatly alter a strategy. Being 70 years old, in reasonably good but not great health, and really capable of only humping equipment a couple of miles at a time I find that a shotgun is a must have. It goes against conventional wisdom but a 9mm, a 30-30, and a 12 and/or 20 gauge is what works best for me. I can only see to shoot out to about 300 yards with consistency so something more than a deer rifle is lost on me anyway. Plus, being this age I am pretty realistic about surviving long term anyway. Most of my stockpile is for my kids and grandkids.

I also have 2 .22lr's and 3 12 gauge shotguns and finally 2 pistol calibers , .45 and 9mm . I reload so I have plenty of ammo for all and buy .22lr every chance I get . None of this ammo does me any good if they break so I bought replacement parts like firing pins and springs etc for everything I have as well .

SBR ak47, bullpulp 12g, 357, 300 mag. Have up close out to 500 yards fully covered. IMO if you don't have a trusty 12 or 10g in a a short barrel style or a pup then your missing prob the most essential tool. A 10+ size group confronts you or comes to ur door I would not be ok with any pistol caliber in said situations. Your gonna want to reduce there numbers instantly and make damn sure each is gone not just down. Sending 12 rds of buck or slug in a matter of secs threw window or door will do just that and do it very well compared to hoping your shot placement with ur 9 will be on point that day.

The good thing about a large spread of calibers is that when everyone buys out the 5.56, you still have a ton of 6.8 on the shelf or if the 9mm is sold out, 40 s&w is everywhere. It helps... I'm coming from a different background and was trained on just about every platform. It helps you to think about the firearm as a tool, you don't care about the brand or color of the shovel, just that you have a shovel.

Yeah but each of those alternative guns you mentioned is more expensive meaning it would be wiser to just buy more ammo of the main caliber you like. Bc anyways if you cant find 9mm you damn sure arent gonna find 40 S&W bullets…BUT. I also buy a range of calibers. I just do it cuz i like them tho🤷🏻‍♂️ i dont get why ppl buy the same caliber in different guns for unless ones compact and the other hunting or something.

I got 10000rds of 6.5grendel wolf ammo for 2300$ in 2017. Ppu and Nemo 6.5grendel brass is 14$ a box right now on ammoseek. And I reload. U can make 6.5 from 7.62x39 brass. People who rely on getting ammo from others won't have ammo period. So standard calibers isn't everything people make it out to be. And is kinda ignorant to believe u will get ammo instead of already having enough bought to begin with. I use 6.5grendel. 7.62x39. 3006. And those are my standard ammo types. Keep enough ammo for all ur guns. U never know the job u might need to perform. Long range. Short-range. Hunting. Everything is essential.

When things got squirrelly in late 2019 (the ammo shortage hit VA first because our governor was an idiot), I vowed never to be caught without again and developed a plan. I divided my calibers into three categories of priority - go-time, hunting, range toys. Then, every payday, I'd get two magazines and $100 of whatever the LGS had in stock of the highest priority category. Might not have been the most cost effective way to get there, but two and a half years later, I'm comfortable across the board and can focus instead on range days and spare parts. This is what I recommend to all my friends now.

As a older man, who has suffered a stroke, my priorities have changed much over the years since the stroke. I am now a recoil-sensitive, slow moving shell of a man, but we all have to play to our strengths & weaknesses & outfit ourselves as best as we can to protect our loved ones & to give ourselves the best chance for survival. In a all out SHTF, my go to round is 5.56... with AK's 7.62 x 39 as back up(I loved the AK's when I still had my strength & balance... today, not as much). For my truck gun(M*Carbo M-Series Sub-2000) & home defense(Extar EP9), I use 9mm, the main reason for this is the lower noise(than 5.56) levels. For longer ranges, I have chosen the 6.5 Grendel round. I have 2 AR-15 chambered in 6.5 Grendel & I am looking to get a bolt action rifle soon(I know the AR-15 6.5 Grendel bolts are it's weak point & I have backup 6.5 Grendel BCG's), but having a bullet proof, bolt action with a good scope, is a better plan. My secondary weapons/calibers are: 380 Auto(S&W 380EZ-sidearm), a few 22LR pistols & rifles(including a bolt action Rossi) for practice & cheap fun, 50 Beowulf(it kicks like a 12GA, but this is my anti-vehicle weapon), 20GA shotguns(both semi-auto & pump.. because why not? 20GA slugs do a lot of damage at close range & have 30% less recoil than a 12GA) & 12GA(both semi-auto & pump, for small game hunting & cheap/wide usage/plentiful ammo). My plan is to hopefully stockpile 3000+ rounds of 5.56, 9mm & 22LR. I hope to stockpile 1000 rounds of 6.5 Grendel, 7.62 x 39, 380 Auto & 20GA. I hope to stockpile 500 rounds of 12GA & 50 Beowulf. I never wanted to have this many calibers stockpiled, but planning for a unknown SHTF future & my lessening/weakening physical capabilities, has shaped my choices. It would be better If I could shoot as well with a 9mm pistol as I can with my 380 auto S&W 380EZ, so I wouldn't have to stockpile 380 auto. It would be great if I could shoot standing with a 308 rifle as I can with 6.5 Grendel, because a 308 packs a much bigger punch, has longer range & is cheaper/more plentiful. As is, I am stockpiling 8 different calibers. As my mobillity & range is limited, there is no bug-out plan, I have to bug-in. If I was younger & stronger, my stockpile would be: 5.56, 7.62 x 39, 9mm, 22LR, 12GA & 308... that's still 6 different calibers. If I had to do a car bug out... I might go with just 9mm, 5.56 & 22LR.... but my hill to die on, might be protecting all my old dog, food, water, guns & ammo, at home or close by? it would be so hard to leave everything behind. That's why so many old men die... we can't change & we always think we are right. I envy all of you that are younger, stronger & that have way more options. Thank you Magic Prepper & Good Luck to us all!

My shtf strategy is defend-in-place. I live in the country on 8 acres where my daughter and her husband live as well, I am 58 years old, have had open heart surgery and prostate cancer. I'm not going anywhere. I did do 29 years in the military and was a Small Arms Instructor for about 15 of it and was also the Anti-Terrorism Officer for our battalion. So I know how to set up perimeter security, etc... I have mostly 9mm because I have an FX9 with 10" barrel and an M9. I also have multiple weights in 5.56 for a DMR set up. I won't tell how many of each, but enough. Those are for me. My wife has a 38 that she just loves to shoot and a 410 pump. She's loves the 10/22 that I have set up for her. I reload all of the calibers that I have mentioned and will mention, plus my hunting ammo. But I like to keep store-bought stuff in stock and will reload once the stores run out. The 308 Win heavy barrel has the dope set for 0-550 yards. It could go longer distance, but 550 is far enough for now. I won't go into detail about my son in law and son, but they all have a full complement as well. My favorite to shoot right now is my Henry lever in 357. I got the newer one with the side gate. Anyway, I only keep about 100 store bought for my conceal carry. Most of us that have been around know that the sidearm is really what you use only until you get to your real fire power (rifle).

I have never been in a gun fight thank God. But I have atleast studied enough to understand when the adrenaline hits, simple tasks can become complicated for the brain to execute smoothly under pressure. Accuracy, drawing the gun and effectively delivering rounds to the threat all becomes much more complicated in the heat of the moment. Having said that. I would want to focus on getting to cover or concealment if possible and have as much ammunition on me at the time as possible. Nobody ever said "I brought to many bullets to a gunfight". Training truly is key, to weed out the mistakes and create new neural pathways in the brain. Hoping to get some training soon.👊

I've made some firearms mistakes but had fun along the way and learned a lot. I narrowed my hobby down to 22lr 25acp 9mm 357mag 45acp 7.62x51 and 12 gauge calibers only. Only stock the primarys. 22lr, 9mm, 357mag, 7.62x51. Just enough 12 gauge to hunt & for emergency in home defense. One thing I've learned is that ammunition is frickin heavy. You can only keep so much, and you can only lift, carry, and move so much. If you're not super strong, or maybe it's just you, yourself, and maybe a wife/gf. You aren't moving 5000 rounds of various ammunition in one tub or box, anywhere far! Shits heavy. Even a few hundred rounds is heavy. Stockpile 22lr that will at least help you out in the weight depot.

If I don't have those calibers it doesn't make sense for me to have ammo for them. If you planning on opening a trading post after it all goes down then yes. But if that's your plan, you need to have the location where you plan to open this said trading house secured so people don't just shoot you and get their special 44mag ammo for free. Securing a location where you won't get killed for your stash should be your priority before that.

Plus during the ammo crunch, I bought a crap ton of 12ga 00 buck just before, about 600 shells of it. I knew a lot of people who had shotguns but no defensive ammo, so I sold a lot of it. Not for the price I paid, but what it was going for, $1/rd. I didn't need all that buckshot, I just wanted it since I like to go out and destroy stuff with friends on the weekends such as TV's, appliances, junk cars, ect. I used that money for other stuff that I did need.I agree, you should have the most ammo for the your primary, don't buy calibers you don't own, that doesn't make much sense. I did the rule of three. Limited the number of caliber firearms I had, then eventually acquired three guns in each caliber. For .357/.38 I had a normal barrel revolver, a snub-nosed one, and a Marlin lever action. For 9mm, I had two pistols and a 9mm carbine. I didn't have to store up a wide variety of ammo, and if a gun was lost, stolen, or broke, I still had something else to use that ammo in.

I have been doing this for awhile. I USED TO worry about getting too many calibers. But I found out I had to deal with ammo shortages all along going back to Bush Sr. Hard to do now but at one time I was able to aquire surplus ammunition at very cheap prices. My chosen caliber 308 became expensive and hard to find. However, 8mm and 7.62x54r was. People kept telling me they would run out but never did until later. I can still find 54r. The best price I ever paid was 1000 rounds at $99. And that is still an option because you can buy multiple calibers for AR type rifles either complete or one lower with multiple uppers. So I made a point for buying uppers and a decent amount of ammunition when I would find one on sale. NOT Grendal but 6.5 Creedmoor or 243. 7.62 x 39 and probably 300 AAC at some point. I was also intrigued with 22 Nosler. With a $200 upper and almost 1000 rounds I am good to go. The Creedmoor upper was abour $250 and a nice 243 barrel under $100 on clearance. This was before the pandemic and the BLM riots so decent ammo for Creedmoor right at $20 bucks a pop match less than $30. Both have come back but at least 50% more. Nosler hasn't but I already have a decent amount. So take advantage if you can with the AR platform. I would specifically recommend a source but not fair to the host. Let's just say the best prices I have found are from a Mormon owned but not managed company. You can easily pay $600 for just an AR 15 upper. If you want LR 308 get the DPMS style uppers and lowers take SR25 configured mags. The others are very uncommon. Just think about it. If you spend $250 on an upper and can only find a few hundred rounds for it so what? Better than nothing in SHTF. Also grab the appropriate BCG and magazine if required. Some are different. There is an lr308 upper in 12 guage but it is kind of pricey and goes on a 308 lower. And think, uppers in all calibers except 50 BMG are not registered though we thought they would be with the reg change.

As for handguns, while I have several of them, they are all of one caliber 9mm and they are all striker fire guns with one exception. The calibers I shoot the most are 9mm, 300 BLK and 6.5CM in that order. The caliber I shoot the least is the .308 and it is the caliber that I have the least amount of ammo for. Honestly, the only real reason I have a .308 is just to have something in a very common caliber if needed. I stock pile 9mm, 300 BLK and 6.5 CM whenever I can get a good deal. I am constantly looking at ammoseek.com for deals. I am particular. I will only buy new ammo, and with very little exception, I try to buy American manufactured ammo. How many people are aware that Sellier and Bellot, which is manufactured in the Czech Republic, and Magtech, which is manufactured in Brazil, are both owned by CBC Global Ammunition, which is headquartered in Brazil? How many people know that Norma is manufactured in Sweden? These are all good ammunition and reasonably priced, but if I can, I prefer that my money stay in the U.S. I do not reload and have personal reasons for not reloading, so please save the comments. Before closing, I just want to thank you for taking the time to make this video.

Great advice. My go-to's are a .308 Winchester and a 9mm. Why? The .308 fits the bill for CQB and long range effectiveness. An AR-10, 16" barrel is light enough and quite capable. I know many will tell me that a 5.56 M855 has better penetration... but try shooting that 600 yrds if need be, without tumbling. People need to stop comparing those green tips with a the measly 147gr M80 ball ammo - optimal loads would be 175gr, HPBT with the right powder. Love my 300WM, .338LM, .375CT and 5BMG's, but we're not walking around comfortably with those babies in a SHTF scenario. The 9mm is the perfect round that's versatile in pistol and carbine configurations. One size like a 124GR +P is all you'll need for your pistol and carbine up to 16". I find it that women prefer to shoot carbines over an AR-15. Maybe it's because many non-AR variants make it super easy to use, like Ruger's PC Carbine takedown - sweet little rig. Peace!

I remember when I was very young and I was asking Colonel Jeff Cooper a simple question. And I asked how much ammo should I keep on hand. Now mind you this was before the 1980s assault weapons ban proposal that was looming in the shadows before became a law later on. He told me for every firearm that I own you should have a minimum of ten thousand rounds per firearm. Another thing he also told me was to make sure you have parts for every firearm you own things do break. As for proper ammo storage I learned from many survivalist who also served during the Vietnam war.. I was also instructed to stay on mainstream calibers and stay away from exotic rounds as they become a problem to aquire. And when preparing for SHTF. And learn hand reloading of ammo. I Keep my battle rounds from training ammo .For chance favors the prepared mind. And I've held to that my entire life.

Great video. I agree. Go with minimal variants of rounds. I collect 5.56, 40 S&W, and 38 +P because I can use those in my Smith 38 +P and my Ruger SP101 357 pistol. I also collect 22LR because you can never have enough. They might not be stopping power ammo....but they'll definitely make someone rethink they're current actions.

As for load-out I go with the standard 6 mags +1 and 3 +1 pistol; when training for a recce I keep 4 more in reserve in my pack along with a 100rnd drum mag for suppressive fire for the designated gunner. Everyone acts as part of the fire team and carries reserve ammo. People really get ahead of themselves and try to go Rambo in SHTF thinking... All you have to do is look at the military field manuals from WWII where our small unity infantry tactics really dominated the force on force battles. Having designated duties is really the way to go. Same with homesteading-- you cant do it all yourself.

What i like about .300 blackout from a reloading aspect is this: Anyone who owns a .223 will have plenty of suitable brass. And if you already reload for 30-30, .30-06, .308, .300 winmag or a slew of others, youve got plenty of projectiles to choose from. Just match it with a widely used powder that suits a number of loading options and its an easy add to your reloading bench.

Since my SHTF scenario out here in the country doesn't involve me pretending to be Rambo, I have made different choices. I have a bolt action 223, but my primary guns are 22LR and 357mag. Both shoot great in both pistols and rifles, and can be both super or subsonic. Custom heavy 357 bullets make it fantastic with a can, and full power loads will knock down a deer no problem. I would really love to get my hands on a double action 8-shot revolving rifle in 357mag, but I haven't had the cash lying around to get a custom one done. I have almost no semi-auto guns left, mostly because I can't afford to be losing brass all the time, but as a side effect I now have a group of extremely robust and reliable guns. Single shot rifles and revolvers don't jam, and they can take a ridiculous variety of loads and bullet shapes.
@lumpyzx2645
@lumpyzx2645 2 жыл бұрын
Revolvers don't jam until they do, and often when they do that have to be disassembled to fix, a good revolver tends to be more reliable than a good semi auto until it comes to harsh conditions like dirt, sand, mud, etc. Don't get me wrong though, I love revolvers, whether SA or DA/SA, favorite revolver barrel length I'd probably have to say is 4⅝" but always feels good to shoot an 8 or 10" 44 mag, snub noses are fun too but I just wish there was more of them that are actually accurate, idk maybe I just need to shoot a snub nose python or something, never shot a python unfortunately. But absolutely agree on policing brass, sucks bending over and looking everywhere to find it from semi autos, and I also agree on 22lr, stack them mini mags deep and they're honestly capable of handling near any situation, they can even kill a grizzly although I'd be running for that 357 and not even look back at the 22, most likely just make it mad with that lol
@Daekar3
@Daekar3 2 жыл бұрын
@@lumpyzx2645 I think that's a fair assessment of the jamming issue with revolvers. If my S&W got out of timing, I would need some serious help or at least education to diagnose and fix the problem. On the other hand, while problems with semi-autos is so common that I almost don't even notice when they happen, I have literally never had any kind of failure with a revolver except for a dud 22LR primer, and that includes my 1895 Nagant. Well, I didn't notice failures in autoloaders until I got revolvers. Now I notice them every time they happen because they're so jarring.

Do yourself a favor, sell the sks and get a zastava ak. It’s like the sks but it’s better in every single way. The extra 4 inches of barrel only give the sks 11 more fps at the muzzle, yes you read that right. 11 fps. The ak has more rounds. Every bubbad sks to retro fit 30 round mags or ak mags are alway finicky and people can never get them to work properly and by the time you have retro fitted your whole sks for rails , 30 mags to actually work properly, tactical stock with pistol grip etc, you could have just paid for an ak that won’t be a finicky garbage rod with cycling issues. And the sks will still have issues even after you think that 30 mag is finally working. Ak ergos are much better and you dont need to bubba the top cover for a rail to mount a scope on the ak since zastava ak has a mount on the side of the receiver for a mount on rail system. I had an sks, even cleaned the cosmoline out of it, then I sold it and bought an ak and realize just how much better it is.
@HatsuneM1ku01
@HatsuneM1ku01 2 жыл бұрын
Also sell the vector. You only bought it because it looked cool. They are problematic. You be better of buying a cheap ar like an M&p and retro fitting it to work with 556 and there’s company’s that sell kits with bolt carriers and a 22lr mag to convert it to shoot 22lr. Since 556 is a .22 bullet, you don’t even need a different barrel, just swap the mag and bcg and your shooting .22 out of your ar. I f you want a pistol caliber carbine type, get a cz scorpion.
@HatsuneM1ku01
@HatsuneM1ku01 2 жыл бұрын
You’ll want both an ar and an ak for defense, and large hunting round like 308 or 30-06 for hunting game such as an ar10( psa makes decent ar10 for a decent price) or a deer rifle. And a 22 rifle like a 22 ar or tye best 22lr rifle on the market Is hand down a ruger 10/22. And a handgun in 45 or 9 whichever you prefer. Both have very similar ballistics, it’s almost impractical to go with 45 these days though since 9mm has progressed so much that it’s performance matches the 45 . 45 cost more and you carry less rounds so for me 9 wins for handguns. More ammo means more training and more rounds carried for my 9mm

I would also recommend not deviating from a particular cartridge too much. Decide whether or not you're going to shoot M855 or M193 (preferably by testing how well your rifle shoots it compared to the other). If you zero for one, you will be off with the other, and you don't want to mix them in together in your mags because you'll be shooting straight for a few rounds then be off the next few. Some people might not know this so I figured I'd throw that into the conversation.

I like the 6.5 CM AR10 options. Some shoot accurate out past 1000 yards. Lower recoil than other similar performance cartridges. .300 Win. Mag for anything bigger. 12 gauge bird shot, slugs, buckshot. 9mm pistol. And .300 blk self defense. I'd put a silencer on everything that makes sense.

Very good advice, especially being really well equipped and trained on prioritized systems. It's the difference between being a gunfighter and a gun collector. I would add this....Personally, I have a pretty good stockpile of some popular ammunition that I don't even have a firearm to feed it to and I maintain it only for barter or other contingencies. I don't go out of my way for it but if it comes my way or I see a really good deal on it, I'll take it and just store it. This came in handy during the Covid supply chain issues when ammunition of any kind was stupid expensive and hard to fine. I give firearms classes and the demand for those classes went through the roof but people didn't have ammo so I was able to continue giving classes, provide ammunition at pre-covid prices, and still make a profit. Just a thought.

In a SHTF situation, you won't be able to run to the store and buy your preferred ammo choice. If I come across something, it's nice knowing I have something that can shoot it. This isn't the easiest or best way to prepare but I also like knowing the limitations and pros to each cartridge. That's only something you can truly learn by shooting. You can also get somewhat proficient in the general manual of arms for multiple platforms that way if someone hands you a weapon if you're unarmed or you find one off a body or in a cache, it's nice knowing you'll know how to maintain it, use it, break it down and clean it too. If you're only proficient in ARs and then find an SKS, AK, Galil, mosin, whatever... what's the likelihood you'll know your way around it?

Not to get into specific recommendations because I think you're right on focusing on high-use calibers but I think .22LR is the exception that you should also have thousands and thousands of in addition to your several thousand of whatever go-to calibers you want. If guns are tools, a 22 will do the most for you in terms of practicing simple breathing and trigger control and sight alignment, in terms of small pest control, and in terms of small game harvesting and in terms of training and arming others. It'll do it probably quieter, definitely in a smaller space and lighter weight and definitely for a fraction of even the cheapest 9mm you could stock.

It’s always an interesting topic when discussing SHTF, but the problem is that it’s such an all encompassing term that it kind of looses its meaning. It’s also a regional issue. For example, I know a guy who had to evacuate for Katrina and ended up loosing the vast majority of his guns and stockpiled ammo. The New Orleans area broke down into complete lawlessness. The cops who didn’t run away, started confiscating weapons and of course they kept them. I recommend only possessing and stockpiling what you can take with you and buying as you go for training. As I mentioned above, this will be regional because if you’re forced to leave your home in bear country, you will want specific weapons for protection. I have a rifle and two pistols with three cans of ammo that I can take at a moment’s notice.

I have 1K rounds of 9mm, stored for a SHTF situation. I won’t use those rounds. In fact, I don’t use 9mm anymore. It’s too expensive. At the range I only use 22LR ammo.

Back when you could get it, I bought a number of spam cans of Tula 5.56. These are the actual spam cans that you need a big can opener to open up. Those are put away not for my use but for trade for food, fuel, whatever, to others that failed to stock up. It won't go cheap. My own stock in .223/5.56 is good Black Hills soft points and similar hunting ammo. I have similar cheap 9mm hardball stocked just for trade, while my personal store is quality HPs. I think everyone should have two stocks. One with cheap ammo for trade, and one for personal use.

All I need is 7.62x39 and 9mm, my sks and cz75b aren't the best set up but it's what I know and am comfortable with. All you need is a good pistol/rifle combo and maybe a 12ga for versatility

I was in Baghdad for two tours and didn’t shoot 9mm one time. In reality it’s just for back up and your rifle is always your go to weapon.

Stock it up but make sure you are rotating the stock as you use it regardless of what it is and how long you have had it. If you are going to play around with different guns in the same caliber and suppress the two guns you can do it just going to be more complicated. To keep the stock rotated and in proper sequence for what you are using it for.
