The main point is that for threads that already exist you need a thread reapair kit. It won't remove material from damaged threads, but will massage them into shape. A tap and die kit is for creating threads where none existed before.

What about the more premium split/adjustable dies? Can’t you cut or chase?
@wonderwalls3565
@wonderwalls3565 Ай бұрын
that is not always true. Your threads may be far too dmaged to be repaired with a chaser and you eventually have to get threads with a tap. The easiest way to knwo if you need tap is if you are using tcorrect size bolt and its going in adn keeps rotating it measn the threads cant be repair anymore and needs to be cut again. chaser wont do this.

As always an awesome instructional video, thank you. As an automotive technician who has trained or overseen training of new technicians as well as veterans for over 15 years, it always surprises me that most of them don’t know the difference between a thread chaser and a tap and die. As you stated most technicians will chase a hole with a tap and unless the hole is really mangled, that’s just not necessary. Usually if a tap is warranted then I’m installing a thread repair kit anyways. Most of the time that I’m chasing a hole I’ll do exactly what you’re doing with a power tool and run the chaser in and out multiple times. I’ll usually spray some brake cleaner in there and when combined with blowing out the hole with compressed air, the threads will look pristine.

This is a great video. I remember my Dad using gasoline and an air compressor to clean threads when I was a teenager.

I think the best way to know if you need a tap or chaser is if you are tightning your bolt and you have made sure its going in straight but it keeps on rotating and does nto gets tighter and if you move it you can feel a ply than you need to use the tap. If the bolt is gettign tighter and not going in even though you are sure its going straight than you need the chaser. In the video the first scenario that I mentioned was not shown.

Thanks a lot for making this video! 👍 Really helped to clarify the difference between a tap and die set vs a rethreading/chaser set.

I had to spend weeks convincing my former manager of the difference between taps and thread chasers. And how cleaning out threads allows proper torque to be reached. Especially critical for electrical applications. I just wish someone made thread chasers for 1" and larger bolts would probably make machine alignment easier

Take a bolt or a nut and make them yourself, by cutting relief joints thru the existing threads on at least 4 sides or 6 relief joints on larger bolts or nuts

I am trying to get the rear spools on my SV650 but the threads are rusty. Now I am finding there is so much information on thread repair it is a deep hole. I didn't even know chasing was a thing I only heard of the tap and die. This was cool video thanks. I ordered the Horusdy chase kit off Amazon for like $50. And some of that cutting oil too.

I have done what you not supposed to do i have used a cheap tap and die set from Buffalo tools when i was growing up and occasionally my dad had a craftsman 60 some PCs set of a little bit of both, but it was not until i was probably 27 and out of highschool and the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head and the thermostat housing on the intake manifold snapped off but the thermostat housing also stripped out this is when i found out about rethread kits and they are what i should have been using all along.... and only a couple of years ago i acquired a lang tools rethreading kit and I'm thankful to have it, because just the 2 cheap rethread combination drill bits to fix the two broken bolts on my momma's 96 Ford f250 efi 460 could have paid part of the cost and the truck was down for a few weeks to fix it right that is after the head having to be checked because you have to be extremely careful using them, similar to drilling out bolts that are broken off

The other incident was i broke off all 4 of the water pump sbc mount bolts on my 78 Chevy c20 changing out a water pump and i was a little older and i actually got lucky just drilling out the bolts and using a extractor kit for removing the bolts and using the tap and die set because i had to cut new threads in three of the 4 holes and that is the only time I've ever had water pump bolts break off on me but of course it was when i absolutely had to have the truck as my backup vehicle was not driveable since it had a bad transmission.... and i had to work that night after changing the water pump that the bearing was shot

Blind hole thread repair is best done with a bottoming style tap? It can be done with a thread chaser, since it is not your typical plug or taper style tap, which will repair the threads farther in the hole than the regular style one's?

Thank you for this video. I need to buy a kit . That kit on the right was that a brute set? I see it is made in the USA. I was told Snap-on was going to start making their own tap and die set but I am tired of waiting on them. Who is the best brand to go with? I heard Erwin was the best. But when you mentioned Brute I am wondering if maybe buying that. Thanks

Lubricants like Kroil, PB Blaster, etc. change the resistance when torqueing down a fastner. Better to use a product like Brakleen.

We're pretty sure that LANG makes most of the kits. If you notice, tons of the kits look identical. That being said, we haven't done a lot of research on that. Also, these thread chasers don't really take a lot of abuse like a tap does. Thanks for watching and asking.

Carbon steel taps and dies are not designed to make new threads reliably? HSS is the only type of tap and die material made to make fresh threads in steel and or plastics? Yes, it can be done, but would not recommend doing it for long? Thread chasers are only good for cleaning damaged threads, not making new threads whatsoever? Great video, sir. It's amazing what misleading info is out there? There is a reason I own a fortune in HSS taps and dies as a master industrial mechanic?

No, those thread chasers are garbage. Use an actual tap or die and do it with PATIENCE! Not like this guy is showing.

With patience also means without power tools. YOU need to feel the friction to judge if something is going alright or not.

@@SE45CXI agree, just recently had to repair 8 wheel studs and originally was going to use a thread chaser as the general consensus was that dies could remove too much material and or cross thread existing threads. I first bought a brand new (not rental) thread restore kit from autozone and on the wheel studs there was not enough contact with the studs to straighten the messed up threads even with the correct thread pitch being used. Ended up going to harbor freight and picking up their newly released icon tap and die set for 140. Did inital alignment by hand and then purchased a 25mm socket to be able to use a ratchet and crank the die all the way down. Did all 8 studs in 30 mins and it worked flawlessly with minimal metal shaved. Additionally for context, half of the bolts were absolutely shredded prior to the repair, as bad as it can get, and thread chasers will not help if a bolt/stud is too marred up.
