Consider stacking front to back vs side-side. You can separate the left/right sides by season and green logs. Take from season side one year. Then the other the next year.

Take my advice and invest in a good log splitter now, I'm 76 and have had 8 shoulder surgeries and total joint replacement both shoulder twice. Take care of yourselves while you are young.

Kudos to anyone who splits wood in the summertime. I can't do it anymore. Now, I follow the advice of an oldtimer who saw me doing it. He advised me to wait until it got cold. That way the wood splitting will warm you twice, once when cutting it and once when burning it. Just a thought that has paid dividends for me. Cheers.

Hello Katie and Greg. For the thumbnail: He's on the chopping block. Greg did put his head down on the short log you were about to split. I've seen an attachment for a bobcat that was a wood splitter. Something like that might fit on the tractor. Have good days!

Suggestion: If you nailed the boards back together with couple of vertical strips, you could hang it from the top board. That would help keep snow and rain off the dry wood at the back. Great video as always.

Once emptied, why not make three or four column/row stall bays. Posts /pallets/slats. This way you pick one vertical bay at a time. First in, first out. No need to cut back access door. Or build another smaller lean to wood shed and rotate each year.

A trick I learned years ago is that when the axe jams in the log, lift both axe and log as high as you can, and twist the axe just before you bring it down. That way the axe head hits the block with the weight of the log behind it. It will split the log easily

How often do you clean your stove pipes? When we burn pine or hemlock/spruce, even when it's dry, we find that creosote buildup happens pretty fast unless we're burning a hot stove. We have mostly hard woods here but we use pine and hemlock to get our fires going in the mornings. We also bought a thermostat for the stovepipe to keep the temperature at an optimal temp to reduce creosote buildup. Anyway, we clean the stove pipes twice during the winter and at the beginning and end of the burning season. So wondering what you do based upon burning mostly soft woods....

a woodsplitter was my saving grace. I heat with wood only. If one of you were using the splitter, the other could not keep pace with loading it in the building. Plus, you don't work yourself to death & it is SO much faster. I bought a used one off an older gentleman that found it was a bigger Unit than he could lift the boom Vertically. Caution: don't mess with one smaller than a 35 - 38 Ton, they're just not strong enough for some of the stuff you are splitting. Well worth the money. Good luck & love your site

Need a bigger woodshed so that separating green from dry is easier. I always suggest to people to build any woodshed big enough to store 2 years worth of wood and room enough to do all your splitting inside the woodshed. 😊

When you're splitting wood and the axe/maul gets stuck and the log comes up with it when you lift instead of just raising the log and slamming it down you should turn the axe around and bring the butt of the axe down first. That way the weight of the log forces itself onto the blade and it will split much easier.

Time to look for a splitter. You may not need one this year but your shoulders will thank you in the near future. Are you planning on getting Steve "fixed". He is more of a pet than any of the others and it would be nice to have him descented when he gets a little older. Yanno, when you built that shed I was wondering how you'd rotate the stock. lol. Now we know! I'll bet the power shed is helping with the temperatures in the house. I could hear those fans blasting when Katie was checking the wattage. Aside from the noise, that's a ton of heat you don't have dumping into the house in the summer! You may use a bit more wood to make up for that "Inverter Heating" in the winter, but I'm sure you're enjoying the quiet!

It is nice to see your progress, even if it is chopping wood. I'm over 70 and people have forgotten how hard off-grid life is, you are constantly working to keep things going and keep yourselves alive. I remember up to 2006 when I lived in a national forest, I would have to chop wood, only a cord of it, but still a good workout. I looked forward to it. Life in the forest was like camping. My ex and I would travel the US just to camp, but when we moved into a forest there was no need to travel to camp. If we wanted we could pull the camping bags out and sleep on the upper deck (no bears to worry about). I would pinch myself every morning I woke up to see if I wasn't dreaming. Enjoy your youth, it comes but once.

You should stack your wood on the sides, that way you have an isle to walk. Dry on one side. Not dry on the other.

A hydraulic wood split attachment that connects to your tractor and runs off the tractor 🚜 hydraulic system, harbor freight or Princess Auto would have a similar unit. Years down the road you will be glad you bought it !!!

Suggest you bury the chopping round low in the ground so it sticks up a few inches. The reason for this is to get the full kinetic downward force in the swing of the splitting mall. The rounds will split more easily for you. Try it out.

Next wood shed ya build ya should build it longer and about same width , so that way you can take same amount of would and split it on both sides to have a easy walkway down the middle so you dont need to doors to get to the back dry wood !

As you don't have a log splitter is there any benefit in using your identified firewood trunks, running them through the sawmill to half and quarter, then chainsaw to length? Would it reduce the amount of splitting and also make what splitting is needed easier!

After a year or two at my place 22 years ago. I decide to buil myself a wood shed, I calculate approx. How much I use per season, and made it with two front door, one year is one side, and the next year it's the other door, way much easier for me. Also made it that I can back up in with my ATV and my little trailer to load the wood. So ! much for ;) love heating with wood, and you guys have a saw mill, you could use soo much of it to heat your place too. I even made myself an other shed, just for wood from wood slab for my sauna and fireplace outside ;)

I was going to suggest, maybe put a partial interior wall within the woodshed and you can use up one side before moving to the other. At least that way you could fill one half of the shed with wetter wood and draw form the other side. Especially seeing you only used about half of your supply... That's how I'm building mine anyway.
