I’ve been quite lucky with my watches’ mechanical reliabilities, I have a Seiko 5 which after a knock stopped working. I then accidentally knocked it again trying to get the case back off for an inspection and it started running again, and still does to this day. I suppose I’m a certified watchmaker now.

LOL. I too have a Seiko 5 and judging by the line's reputation i believe it'll last a few decades. I compare the traditional 7S26 movement to the AK-47: dead simple, unrefined, not sophisticated but it took the advantages and experience of clever design decisions to be solid, reliable and easy to keep and replace.

Two great experiences to share: I own a SKX009 since the early 2000s. At the time I really liked watches, but didn't have a collection or knew too much about them, so I bought it thinking that automatic watches wouldn't need anything until they simply stopped working. 20 or so years later I know better and have other watches that go to get serviced, have warranties and so on. The SKX continues to run accurately without ever been opened. It's true I wear it less than I did at the start as I have other watches, but it's a testament to a great watch icon. Given its sentimental value, I will get its movement replaced when the time comes... The other great experience for me is Tissot. My dad gave me a Touch-II in early 2018 and it needed battery replacement earlier this year. I paid 50 GBP (I'm in the UK) for that. Sure it's expensive for a battery change, but the watch has special sensors so I didn't want to risk it. I was super happy as they did that, replaced all gaskets, buttons and crown and sent me a little note explaining that the watch has been on basic tests and passed ok so they assessed as the watch didn't need any other servicing or parts. They even send you a carrier pouch (now I use it for other watches on holiday) so that the watch is protected during the journey! Great service in my opinion, given that we're not talking about a super expensive watch or service itself.

Love to see the mighty flighty out again. Quite a useful video as well. My local jewelers have been notoriously unreliable with getting things serviced, and doing any major operation includes either shipping my watch off or leaving my small town for a more reputable jeweler. Very posh!

A very important video. As an illustration of how important it is to find a reputable watch maker, many years ago I took an old chronograph to a local watch maker for repair. My father had given it to me and I wanted to get it in working order. The watchmaker said it wasn’t worth fixing. I kept the watch and a bout 3 years ago I sent the watch to Saltzman’s. They informed me that the movement was missing several key parts. Apparently, the original local watchmaker had taken a few parts out of it for whatever reason. It being and old Valjous movement it took Saltzman’s a few weeks to source the missing parts. They restored it back to it’s former glory. It now works like a charm. And….thanks to you Tristano for recommending Saltzman’s for my servicing. They will always get my business. As always I hope you and your family are well.

Watchmakers are charging insane prices to service vintage watches, the other day I asked for a quote to service my UG Polerouter, and the watchmaker told me it would start at $1k without even seeing the watch. It was the same thing with my Rolex OP, they wanted to charge me $1450 just to change the crown tube and do the movement cleaning. The feeling I have is that many watchmakers are trying to take advantage of the hype that is going on with watches, which makes it hard to find a trustworthy watchmaker.

Another brilliant one. My worst experience was with Ernest Jones jewellers in the UK. They tried to charge me £150 for a full service on my "Joe Biden" SEIKO 7T32-6N10. A year later after getting more into watches and watching Marc's brilliant "Watch & Learn" I decided to get myself the proper kit to open it myself. It really only did need a new battery. A SEIKO genuine battery cost me £3.50 and the kit was £18. Win win! The kit has paid for itself as I've used it again since to resize the bracelet on my Island Monster. Sorry to trouble you again TGV, I've checked the store, I still can't see the watch strap compass listed.

Running fast is probably the first obvious clue that the watch needs servicing. As lubricants dry up, they become more sticky, and this causes the amplitude of the balance swing to lessen. This (counter-intuitively) almost always causes the rate to increase, rather than decrease. So if your watch is starting to gain, that is a sure sign that it is time to get it serviced. Another thing you might like to make a video about is storage. Simply flinging your expensive watch in the safe and expecting it to be happy is not a good idea. At the minimum, store it with a small desiccant pack, and make sure the storage space has a reasonably stable temperature and humidity level.

I recently bought a Panerai pam305 (2012) in Chicago for $5,500 A good price but it was beat up pretty bad (bezel scratched up and markers faded etc.) and definitely needed to be serviced. I took it to my local dealer and they had to send it to Panerai because it was their in-house movement. Took 6 weeks to get an estimate which was $4, 500 (complete overhaul ) I was shocked.....I wound up just getting the movement service and new bezel for $1,700 (which took another 3 months).

@@theurbangentry Mr Urban Gentry - I’ve been considering a Navitimer for quite some time now. My biggest “issue” with paying around $9000 USD is the fact that, from everything I’ve read, other than washing your hands, you do NOT want to get a Navitimer wet. Not even in a swimming pool. A little frustrating as you’d figure for that amount of $$$, you should at LEAST be able to swim with it. The Superocean Heritage Chronograph, while not my first choice, seems more practical with regard to being able to wear it all the time. Had the Speedmaster for 15 years. Ran with it. Swam in swimming pools and would get in the water here at our Texas beaches. NEVER had an issue. Really really really really really want a Navitimer, but don’t want to have to worry about getting it wet. First world problems I know…

Water will always find a way. Having also owned a rusty vintage vehicle it also applies! If a vintage watch has any metal pitting between the case back and the case you will never obtain an airtight fit. You need it to be squeaky clean connection between metal and gaskets. I would just add getting it pressure tested (and gaskets checked and greased) annually if used in water regularly and of course rinse in fresh water after going into salt water. Bezels will trap in salt crystals and all sorts of other nasties. Personally? I would use a G Shock for anything heavy duty and keep my vintage watches well away from water, but each to their own.

Superlative video. I have been collecting watches for more than 70 years ( I am old) and you are right. Wish were any watchmaker in my huge zone. All are dead or into their 90´s so when a watch stops it remains like that forever or people throw them away. I have rescued dozens from boxes in trashes. More than 100 mechanical watches resting, from Omega, Tissot, Lango, GP, Breitling, Hanhart to Midos...(not to mention Seikos and Orients). Fun thing: ALL my watches run but it is bad to use them after 30 /70 years resting. Europe is good. Abrazos, desde la gélida Patagonia, Argentina with -20 C. Grazie.

Hi TGV! I always have a bit of a dilemma when it comes to servicing, as my watch collection is at a lower price-point and are a mixture of 7S26, NH35, NH36 and 4R36 movements. My oldest watch (SKX009) is over 20 years old and still keeping great time, but when I asked for a service quote they invariably advise replacement/upgrade of the movement rather than a strip/service. I guess I should be delighted that movements are so cheap and so well built, but the thought of replacement seems incredibly wasteful and somehow 'disloyal' to the watch itself?
@smokincooks7661

I look at those like cars - unless they are limited edition (and marked with matching serial numbers / limited designs on movements), it doesn't matter. Swap a new movement in and enjoy your mass produced watch running well again. No one will care if you ever sell it. Keep the old movement for spare parts, unless it's a one in, one out policy. Unlike collecting cars and their parts, watches and parts don't take up much space.

I don't service my watches as often as I probably should, but the collection is so large, most are in an unwound state in the box at any given time. I have had some service issues before, and the manufacturers have been very good. 1. Victorinox. I have a Chrono Pro that had a reset issue with the chronograph function. There was an authorized service provider near me who fixed it under warranty. 2. Several years later, I accidentally changed the date instead of adjusting the time near midnight. That broke the date complication (a common issue on 7750s). I brought it to the same repair shop as above, who I have had good experience with. I told them exactly what had happened, and they charged me for a partial (top) service for about $400. When I got it home the service, it wouldn't wind. Other than the date not working, everything was running fine before. Shop says I now need another bottom service for an additional $450. The shop clearly broke something in the movement, and I contacted Victorinox whom agreed it that I shouldn't have to pay for a possible shop error. They worked things out with the shop. Unfortunately, I don't think I can use them anymore as my personal watch smith. I guess if they were going to burn me for $450 on their mistake, they didn't think much of me in the first place. 3. I bought one of my dream watches in March - a Breitling Navitimer B01 43mm. Within 3 hours of the purchase, the chronograph start cam broke free and jammed against the column wheel. Not a great start. I brought it back the next day and it was replaced with a new one, upgraded to a full bracelet for half the difference in price and received a leather strap and buckle, travel case, two additional bottles of champagne and some a bracelet (for the wife) for my trouble. So, while the purchase certainly wasn't hassle free, I still think very highly of Breitling in general. I will certainly take them up on the two additional years of warranty for $375. 4. After a few months of using my new Alpina Startimer Heritage GMT, the crown became very hard to wind. I had been hand winding it because I only wore it one or two days a week, and the GMT is annoying to set my three preferred time zones. I brought it back to the AD and explained it. I also admitted to them that I was winding it manually rather than using a winder. They mentioned that wasn't covered by warranty, but they will see what they could do. Two months later, it came back from the Aplina service department as good as new. I'm not sure if they replaced the movement or fixed the one inside, but they regulated the hell out of it. At one point I left it in my winder (one I bought just for this watch) for a few months, and it was off by under 10 seconds. Thats 10 seconds for the entire month! So there you go: Breitling, Alpina and Victorinox get my respect for their service. BTW, are you referring to Salzman's in RI? My wife and I will be in Newport this weekend and I was thinking about checking out their store.

People should be aware that many modern watches cannot be serviced by independent watchmakers. For example, Omega coaxial requires special tools, lubricants, and techniques. Plus, the tools and parts are only available to Omega certified watchmakers. So, many (I would guess most) independent watchmakers just say no to those. I'm sure there are other examples. Also, not all authorized service is necessarily better. Anyone who has had Rolex over-polish a case or replace a valuable vintage dial or bezel with a modern part learned this lesson the hard way.

About service I would consider some other factors: 1. Brand matters as much as complications: Rolex (or Cartier) it run till it doesn't, though & anyway an expensive service you let it count; 2. Low Amplitude does not mean "have to service", not always at least: own a pasha 1990 and rolex turnograph 1965, both not omptimal amplitude, yet they work very well 3. sturdy movement (omega 500 series) are more resilient to time. In general I would advise service when really needed, due also to inceeasing costs. Very good point about impetmeability, it decrease over time, is not permanent feature, and degrade over use: water is a serious enemy. TGV good arguments as usual. Thx

This is a smart question. Many new enthusiasts do not understand the cost of ownership. It's a personal choice. If you enjoy the watch, the service is probably worth the cost (even if you have to set the watch aside to save for the service cost). A water intrusion is the only need for immediate service.

I'm in UK and have my father's mid-60s Tissot 'Stylist' manual wind watch, which I recently thought I'd have serviced. Sent it in to Tissot through my local high street Tissot AD but they sent it back saying it was too old so they couldn't touch it. They were happy to still charge me the £45 'consultation fee', though. Any advice as to where I could have it serviced appreciated!

Not much of a story but I have a Seiko Samurai. I bought it in brand new in January 2020. It worked well for a few months but then it started to gain time to an unreasonable degree. At one point it was gaining about 2 minutes a day. I took it to my watchmaker and they said it wasn't magnetized. It was sent for servicing and the issue happened again and was sent off again. It's been better since but I still don't understand why it was like that. Anyways, another great video!

Is there even a way to find out who is good to service a watch in a given area? Here in Ontario (Canada), I've looked and there pretty much aren't any resources online, and most places now seem to be glorified battery replacement services at a department or jewelry store. Also for cheaper watches, not sure I agree with regular service, for those I am more of the mind run it until it breaks. If it costs $300+ to service a $200 watch it doesn't really make any sense, and really you could just replace the movement yourself with minimal effort for $100 or less (if we are talking a 7S26 or NH movement). Granted seals are a different story if you are using a watch in water vs it being a desk diver.

You put this up just at the right time. I am thinking to buy a Seiko pogue but with the blue dial (not sure of the exact ref number) being advertised locally. I am interested but I have never picked up a watch used and have heard that there are a lot of franken versions on the market. Ideally you would want it checked before buying but how would you negotiate that?

Mr Urban Gentry - I’ve been considering a Navitimer for quite some time now. My biggest “issue” with paying almost $9000 USD is the fact that, from everything I’ve read, other than washing your hands, you do NOT want to get a Navitimer wet. Not even in a swimming pool. A little frustrating as you’d figure for that amount of $$$, you should at LEAST be able to swim with it. The Superocean Heritage Chronograph while not my first choice, seems more practical with regard to being able to wear it all the time. Had the Speedmaster for 15 years. Ran with it. Swam in swimming pools and would get in the water here at our Texas beaches. NEVER had an issue. Really really really really really want a Navitimer, but don’t want to have to worry about getting it wet. First world problems I know…

i spent good pennies on my 9 watches and they all have in house movements, hate to think of the cost of maintenance down the road. I rotate them regularly and i baby them i am just worried is lubricant drying up is a given over certain period of time or not? just the thought of paying a price of new seamaster professional to maintain my collection every given period of time makes me think of getting out of this hobby. Another point Fredericho talks watches has a video saying modern watches can go easily 10-20 years any one can confirm? I need it all depends but just someone with experience owning upper mid tier watches can confirm it one way or another?

I bought a vintage solid gold datejust but realised it was too small. Tried to sell it to a guy who owns a repair shop in Sydney, that is being used by all the top brands. Guy has his Master Watch maker posted proudly on the wall. After opening the back to examine it he put the lid back on with rubber seal poking out as we didn’t agree on the price. I didn’t notice it till later and when I returned, this Master watch breaker refused to fit it back in without a charge.

Okay , hearing this sort of disappoints me. I have been considering buying an Omega . currently ,I only own one semi-luxury watch. I bought my daily B&M Capeland over 15 years ago. I mean daily use , through gym workouts, showers , and carpentry work including manual hammering . I don’t know if I just got lucky with this watch ,but I have never had it serviced, and I only have to adjust my time by a few minutes each month. Now I am worried about getting another more expensive watch. I never priced in service fees since I never needed any service prior to a watch. Did I get lucky or if service really a necessity in watches ?

You mentioned about lubrication evaporating. how could this happen if the watched is sealed providing gasket is good? Mark LIW said repair if watch seems to operate erratically. Not particularly on a maintenance schedule. If your watch is worn without hazards is it necessary for overhauling?
@diavalus
@diavalus 2 жыл бұрын
The air inside the case has a RH below 99%, so oil can evaporate. Besides, when we operate the crown, some of that air is replaced, which in time (a couple of years), will allow the oil to dry.

Can you make a video on what signs indicate whether a watch has recently been serviced? Like screwing down the crown with only a quarter turn left. I purchased a watch on eBay where the seller claimed the previous owner had it serviced. I got it for a good deal, and I found out it was not recently serviced.

3 years old is not long enough imo for normal use to affect accuracy that much. the 6r15 movement inside your watch is susceptible to getting small kinks in the hairspring where it sticks against itself due to a shock, it could be that, if you can check it under a loupe. doubt it's magnetization because that makes the watch run faster, but you can try to demagnetize it, you can find the device really cheaply. I did notice my past Seikos tended to become inaccurate but my solution was always selling them off.

asking for service history is important, however, the answer to "has the watch been serviced" is not the most important. If a seller lets you know that they bought a watch 10 or 15 years ago and never had that watch serviced it would be a worthy consideration to buy that watch. At the right price of course. Buying an un-serviced watch from he original owner can ensure that the watch has not been polished, or hacked into by an amateur watch enthusiast. It all depends on condition. An un-serviced movement can always be serviced. Just be careful of broken movements, missing parts, and water damage in the case.
