I think E Major and B Major are the easiest to play - they create more space for the thumb tucks. E Major gets the nod because both hands start with either 1 or 5.

Good suggestions for sure. What was the name of the piece and composer at the 5:53 mark? Bianchi? I'd like to get the sheet music for that. Thanks. Even the transcript couldn't understand the name. Thanks.

Hi, it's Nuvole Bianche by Ludovico Einaudi. You can find the link to the sheet music in his essential piano roadmap 😊

@ Thanks! That piece would be very appealing to my students. It’s amazing to me that I’ve been teaching almost 40 years and there’s still cool repertoire to be discovered. I saw the Road map link suggestion after I posted the comment. So I’ll check that out too.

Thanks for the tips. I have several methods to practice scales. First I might do one a day, but play through all the modes. But not in the order that they are usually taught. I start with Lydian, the only one with a sharpened fourth. Then the Ionian (Major). Then flatten the 7th (Myxolydian), the 3rd (Dorian) the 6th (Aeolian, but also Harmonic and Melodic minors), the 2nd (Phrygian) and the 5th (Locrian). There is also a scale with a flattened 4th, but I don't know the name. That way in twelve days, all the scales are covered. I have a list since there are several where you have to start on the fourth finger either in the left or right hand. Don't forget to practice contrary motion. I recently started the Grand scales, or Russian scales. To be honest, doing flat keys is difficult. And pay attention with Melodic minor.

You seem quite knowledgeable; how would you advise someone struggling to know what finger to use (as you mentioned flats can be difficult) in a bog standard melody, I’ve tried the 12345 321 but it’s hard to implement into a non chromatic scale

one way to make more even and smooth out accents is to play in different rhythmic patterns and accenting different notes --

I've heard that, contrary to the instructions in Hanon, you should not raise your fingers high when doing exercises. I definitely found Hanon to be way more valuable when raising the fingers, but maybe it's something to do with injuring your fingers?

I like practicing D major - not too sure why! 😅

My piano teacher assigned me more scales today. She has me practicing rhythm. Call me crazy, but I actually asked for theory HW on rhythm. She has me practicing the Hanon exercises. I am on Exercise 4 and 5 now.
@catlady9123Күн бұрын
I'm playing my first piece with trills on the 3-4 and 4-5 fingers and some of the Hanon excercices are perfect for that as well (specific ones train your fingers to be able to do them more easily). My teacher is somewhat more on the, let's learn the exercices as we need them vs learning them in order though.
@kaleimaileКүн бұрын
@ , that is cool. I was having trouble with the timing today so she had me tap on one hand and play with the other hand and then, we tried it and it worked. I am going to work on exercise 4 and 5 till the next lesson, plus a few more scales and then, the flash cards.

One thing I've never fully understood is the fingerings for playing a scale beyond one octave. May seem like a pretty trivial thing but I'd love a breakdown of that if anyone has a resource on that.
@ollieb98752 күн бұрын
For C major for example you need to do the thumb tuck or finger over at 3 then 4 then 3 to do two octaves.

What are the names of the pieces that were played in the video?
@pratibhasrivastava15062 күн бұрын
Hello jazer, i have a question, shouldn't we just focus on songs and pieces, as while learning that we already learn scales too?
@catlady9123Күн бұрын
Learning the basics makes learning songs and pieces easier. Like oh, these notes are a C major scale, this series is chromatic scales from x to y, my left hand is actually just doing arpegios of these chords, etc. So you're not memorizing individual notes when learning a piece but the patterns and if you have muscle memory of those patterns, it is so much easier to learn. Basically, I can read a series of notes in a measure by just looking at the first one and my hand knows what to do and which fingers to use.

You don't need further exercises. Just practice all these when actually playing the scales. Another thing: Try and find chords whilst doing scales, then motivation remains high.

I love your video but today I disagree with the 1st exercice with finger 4 and trying to lift finger high. Totally detrimental to my wrist.
@aBachwardsfellow2 күн бұрын
Yes --if you're doing too hard, or too fast. It doesn't need to be done for hours -- no more than 2 - 5 minutes at a time -- and do it *VERY* slowly -- NOT fast -- try to keep everything in the hand -- fingers 1, 2, and 3 -- and wrist as *relaxed* as possible. Also try holding 1, 2 and 5 and playing 3, 4. And shake out your hands and arms to relax everything after each set.

I know little about pianos, but I do know that it hurts my ear when you call an arpeggio "arpejjyo". The "i" is only there to prevent you from saying "arpeggo". It is not supposed to be pronounced. "arpe-j-j-o".
@RolandHuettmann2 күн бұрын
Fingers have very little muscles, cannot be developed, and should not be used without rotation of forearm and actually the whole body. The muscles are elsewhere. No lifting up individual fingers -- sorry. It is a wrong advice. There are so many modern techniques teaching not to lift fingers!
@HomeByTheSeas2 күн бұрын
I think the idea of finger lifts wasn’t meant to be utilized during playing but instead used as an exercise to build muscle connections and therefore strengthen the individual fingers. That way when playing, you won’t struggle as much to play fingers that are naturally weaker like 4 and 5. I didn’t interpret the video as pushing to actually play pieces lifting the fingers.
@RolandHuettmann2 күн бұрын
@@HomeByTheSeas I understand, but what for? The mechanism is an integrated play of body, shoulders, arm, hand and fingers. Certainly, there are movements that need training, but not for seperated individual fingers -- which is outdated, or fits only to very light actions of the early 19th century.

@aelechko2 күн бұрын
@@RolandHuettmannyou're out to lunch here bud. It develops elasticity and strength by lifting them up. And he only says to do this if you're lacking strength in those fingers. It's a good exercise to practice lifting them even away from a piano just on your leg while you're chilling. Guys been a teacher for over ten years with many many successful students and you're just gonna pretend you're a better teacher? Okay then.

Great content, but what is the rush? Why so frantic? If you would slow down and breathe, and leave a little space between thoughts to allow the viewer to absorb them, I think it would be much more effective.
