Live edge slabs can be great sources of sawmill income, but mud in the bark slabs can cause more damage than they are worth, and cleaning the muddy bark off is no fun.

I just came across your channel. I grew up in a multi-generational sawmill family, so thank you for bringing back some sense of logic and common sense to producing quality lumber. Like you, I too have my grandfather's old drawknife. Looks just like yours. I'm near San Antonio, but will be coming to Atlanta in August. I have the 16” Cantek dual surface planer. Because of your videos. And it is a game changer. I have ran about 10,000 board ft threw it. And the blades are still razor sharp.

For folks who don't know, this is Jake, the "Custom Sawyer" on KZbin, and he has the same planer, except a 30". Mine is a 25" but will take a deeper cut. So I think mine is better, he thinks his is better! Either way, we like giving each other crap about our tools.

I peel the bark off using a draw knife right after slabbing out the green logs. Works well for me mist of the time. Same process as here

My grandpa had 2 draw knives and I remember right where they hung in the shop in the mid 70s when I was a kid. He wasn't a woodworker so I'm not sure why he had them? He was a farmer. They must have gone in the sale after he died unexpectedly at 54(I was 13 then). I have 2 Pexto brand draw knives now and use them a lot while milling. I can't remember what you do with your bark and dust? Burn or compost? Brad_bb

We pretty much burn the bark and use the sawdust as soil conditioner.
