Lea is a good singer...end of story. Barbara is an enigma. I have never seen anyone so effortlessly in control of their voice. I think she is the reason that Funny Girl was not attempted in Broadway in the 80s or 90s. They knew that her performance in this was unmatchable.

I love that the audience starts applauding while she's still singing, as if they couldn't hold back.

That's common practice nowadays. Whether it's warranted or not, sadly.

@@shawnmulligan2894 it’s the audience’s power to determine if it’s warranted or not as they are the ones who literally give that applause.

NYTimes: According to the sound designers T. Richard Fitzgerald and Otts Munderloh, "Funny Girl," which opened March 26, 1964, was the first Broadway show to use body mikes."

The PRIZE here is listening La Streisand having fun hopscotching with the notes with careless ease. Too fabulous. Fantastic post, thank you!!!!

And with verve. Showing Fanny's determination. From 62-67 she just couldn't be beat. For reals. Something much different about her singing from that period.

She is really in Full Belt voice right here. Amazing! Her energy is astounding. Her final Broadway performance. She really gives it her all!!!

Now really......what can match that! Listen also to the immense musician she is. How her sense of rhythm is so incredibly perfect and unified with her emotional expression. Aaaaah so very inspiring. Thank you so much for posting this. Wow, big smile for today!!!!

🎹 Lea is a tepid shadow in comparison to Babs. Sorry...that's just how it is. P S... I saw Streisand in Funny Girl at The Winter Garden Theater when I was 16! So there! 👏🥳👏

Less mannered than later versions but full of vim. I prefer.

Classic. And to think that at one point this recording was state of the art.

It wasn't. This is a live recording from the audience, never meant to be released.

Definitely not in '65. There are fantastic stereo recordings of live opera performances going as far back as '55
@smurf9022 жыл бұрын
@@rossmerchant8435 yes, this wasn't a recording specifically set up to be released as a professional live recording to the masses. It was just to preserve the live performance.

@@smurf902 Oh for sure. I actually really enjoy a lot of crummy live performances. The recording quality gives it character and a sort of feeling of being a fly on the wall during a historic moment

Anyone who compares Lea to Barbra has clearly never heard Barbra. DO NOT insult our original Fanny like that!!!! Barbra is incredible. This. Is. It.

Who here compared Lea go Barbra? Lol. Barbara is queen she always will be. But Lea sounds damn good singing this song. Saw her in funny girl on Broadway last week and she was phenomenal. We can lift another woman up without tearing one down. Do better

Cringe to claim someone as “original” by playing a character based on an ACTUAL, REAL person.
@that1theatreguy Жыл бұрын
@@CountryCowboy008 yes, based. barbra even admitted the show was barely about fanny and more about her. and that's true, the show isn't an autobiography.

I think I like this more than than the movie performance. Definitely don't care about seeing her hustle through an abandoned dock holding luggage.There's no way there aren't girls out there with the necessary physical ability. Why aren't people identifying and training them? Whether true or not, makes me appreciate the idea of Russia throwing a lot of state support behind young ones of talent once identified whether sports or ballet. Without it, we got Michelle Lea who sings about as good as Michelle Lee.

Admittedly was never into Broadway, but after years of listening to the contemporized/refined studio and movie versions, this just sounds annoying and obnoxious.
