"Don't ruin my scene!" Oof, what a diva. The DM of one of my groups clearly had a whole monologue planned out for a vampire villain connected to my character when he cornered our party in his tomb, but we were all so scared from the DM's impeccable build up that we attacked him as soon as he appeared. The DM didn't mind, he just rolled with it and didn't throw a hissy fit. Craig needs to let go and realise that tabletop games are not anime, the players are not his audience, and he is not the fucking main character.
@Elenrai

I totally agree! If your players learn from the way the world you created treated them so far, they are clearly paying at least SOME attention to what you are doing and trying to add to the logical narrative. As a DM, rolling with it and still creating an enjoyable experience together with the players is the way to go! Besides, you can always read the epic monologue to the players later if you would like them to hear it.

As someone who had been a pushover, the big problem is it's difficult in real life to get one of these games going due to conflicting schedules with each person having other commitments to obligations, whether family, work, school, etc... we're just glad WHEN we can get a session going and keep the momentum moving. But really, it's their own fault for not suggesting they make their own group WITHOUT Craig. They have the numbers.

The first time is all on Craig but every time after that, that these people just let him do these things is all on them. Yall could have walked away or said no at any time. It's like that old saying, "fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me." By all logical reason, these players should have jumped ship once the red flags became apparent. An asshole DM who takes agency away from the players, throws tantrums and sulks when things don't go his way, and killing off PCs because you either hate the player or hate the design and concept. Craig is a textbook example of a bad DM. So people start to wonder why the players don't just leave. Well... first, the social dynamics of a small group of friends are/can be complicated. Leaving the table means abandoning your brothers in arms, so to speak, to face the bastard alone. No one wants to feel like that guy who would leave his friends dangling over the edge of a cliff. So they stick it out. Another thing to consider, the Trilogy of Craig was written after the fact. Time and reflection to look back and asking what went wrong really opens peoples eyes to how bad and shitty the situation really was. At first, the signs and red flags probably went by unnoticed until a pattern emerged.

I think he was going for a lovecraftian vibe there, especially with the "monkey-things", as that might just as well be ripped straight from one of lovecraft's stories called "the Lurking Fear". Now, there's no giant tentacle monster in that story, but we all associate Lovecraft with tentacle monstrosities anyway so there's always that possibility. That, or Craig genuinely just pushes tentacle hentai onto unwilling and unknowing players. It happened to me once in a campaign, actually, I had no way of knowing the threat, no way to fight it, and the other players were someplace else, etc...it sucked immensely and I still blame the DM for it, even though he's actually a decent guy. My character also wasn't injured afterwards or anything like that, but being left powerless feels like it's unjust punishment for no reason. (The only thing I was guilty of was roleplaying that my character felt somewhat arrogant after a recent victory, and by no means was I harming the other players.)

I'm willing to bet that if you did some digging, you'll find elements ripped off from elsewhere. Which, isnt truely a bad thing. DMs should steal the things they like and adapt them to their game, but Craig has shown an inability to adapt what he steals, so I'm betting the major points of his setting were ripped off elsewhere. Other evidence for this is the fact he couldnt stick with the themes and veered off in to what was familiar: Fantasy and stealing another DM's story.

Oof, going from Pathfinder to D&D 4e? I guess it's better for some, but feels like such a downgrade in my boat. It's a real shame that the OP was forced to take Bladebound against their will, it's actually my favourite archetype in Pathfinder but Craig likely ruined their potential enjoyment of it. Did you know the Black Blade's supposed to be the same alignment as the PC? Obviously Craig didn't know or care. Not that you can't have conflict between sword and user (for example, I played a LG Elf Magus who was a total sweetheart, but her black blade was a more harsh and driven LG type), but seeing it used for that purpose alone really wrecks the class IMO.

KingDyste That was almost the most surprising thing in the video! I don’t just mean that it was a bizarre choice either-I literally don’t know anyone who could run 4e and there are maybe 3 people I know who know the rule set well enough to play. Far, far fewer than PF, 3.5, or even 2e.

Oh gods. The "small character building moment" is giving me flashbacks to a recent game. Summary: In a party of 6 DM feels the need to add a DMPC who is an elf from a distant land. w/e cool. we have a rogue now. In our first several battles we make a BIG DEAL about offering mercy to our foes. In a later battle the Rogue throws a dagger into the back of a fleeing foe killing them (IN THE BACK) obviously against group wishes. I tell them DM: hey I think a scene where we tell the rogue that wasn't what we do here would be a great "small character building moment." Quick and easy. When we talk to the DM's rogue? "No no no. I did no wrong. You all just lack courage and are unprofessional. You need to understand and accept me! I am right!" Then our wizard jumps in to agree with them. 3 sessions later and several attempts to salvage things the Wizard and DM still WOULDNT SHUT UP so I put that character on a break and brought in a murderhobo.

This is why we don't do DMPC's. I get wanting to play as a player rather than DM at times, but what's the fun in playing D&D if you're already aware of everything that you're going to encounter?
@RedFloyd469
@RedFloyd469 4 жыл бұрын
@@dbzfreak12321 To be fair, that's irrelevant. The DM ALWAYS knows more or less what will happen, plot-wise. Adding a DMPC does not change that. The DM can still have fun doing what he/she is doing, just by being a DM. What matters is that the PLAYERS have a fun time playing THEIR characters. What the OP here is posting, goes against that mentality, it breaks the immersion, ruins any possible early group interaction, and basically somewhat railroads the situation. That said, it could have been salvaged, and is not necessarily a bad thing. The DMPC is entirely allowed to have a somewhat stubborn or less moral personality. Part of the roleplaying aspect is that the group then deals with this situation in a certain way that helps make things interesting. If the OP is right, however, this last part did not in fact happen. Which is when the DM ruins the experience.

@@RedFloyd469 The key to playing a good DMPC is to not make them any more significant or powerful than a normal player would be. Especially not omniscient. Players have access to meta knowledge too; they have to keep their character oblivious just as we do with our NPCs. I always reel my characters in if they happen to have a big moment, and try to put spotlight on the others as much as possible. I outright refuse them sharing treasure with my character and only have them accept any gifts when they insist upon it.

Pathfinder is a great system. It's so versatile and for the most part has a viable system for almost anything, and if not has all the tools necessary to make one. Also, I'm playing a Monk right now and almost single handedly took down a lv5 water kineticist, with the ability to manipulate the water in my blood, at lv3 and not building min-max. Only reason I failed is because he escaped. Sounds more like incompetence/lack of character creation ability.
