The problem with these sorts of games is that when you know there's no actual threat, everything becomes far less scary. At that point, the game is just trying to startle you and trigger a reflex reaction, rather than an actual fear response.

This is really well put, and largely the reason why I haven't been watching people play this game. I don't know what the objective is, and you die more to nonsense than to actual scares. The whole game feels like a "oh, I gotcha!! I gotcha that time!!"

Fr. My tolerance for horror is ABYSMAL and I usually have to turn off even the mildest stuff. As soon as I realized literally nothing would actually kill Spiff in this game (besides making noise) I sat through the whole thing unflinching. The jumpscare attempts became not scary and instead random curious oddities. Is this how people who actually like horror tend to view it? Lol

I love how this game has been played by youtubers whos entire brand is screaming at the slightest thing on screen and yet I've seen them make it through the game in one try. Then, however, you have spiff who is usually stonefaced through all horror games and yet he's died more times than all those youtubers combined.

Tbf they didn't have chat trying to mess with them. Spiff mainly lost to laughing at chat, those people were likely pre-recorded. It also helps when you realize this entire game is just about jumpscaring you and there's no real threat...much less scary.

The 100% sensitivity thing reminds me of that one Wii Fit game, where you had to sit still, so your candle wouldn't go out. Longest time I ever got was around 50 seconds, and the longest time possible was 3 minutes. Taking that time, and multiplying it by 6 WHILE having to move ingame, is pretty insane.

I remember playing that as a kid! I managed to get the highest score twice ever. It was...one of the most painful experiences a 8-9 yo could ever experience. You had to be PERFECTLY STILL to get to the end of the candle :')

I tend to flinch at jumpscares rather than making sound. So I think I'd survive relatively well, but boy would my knee hurt from slamming it into the desk (and obviously I'm assuming here that that would not create sound which is not a good assumption). my only problem with don't scream, is that the game is wayyy less scary considering the only threat is yourself, there are no enemies that can directly kill you, they just scare you and if you make a sound you die which is fine but personally I think it would go crazy if you had an existing horror game like resident evil 2 and then had to play with the same system

A lot of people give this game crap, and I agree that it's not great as a horror game, but it's an incredible proof of concept on multiple fronts. Like spiff said the jumpscare variety is incredible, the atmosphere is immaculate, and the mic thing adds a unique dynamic to gameplay that ramps stress up. If they take a little bit more thought to the game and the design to actually make it scary instead of just leaning on cheap jumpscares, then I think it'll end up as an incredible game.

See this is like, a perfect example of a game designed for streamers/yt'ers. There's not much replay value for us scrubs but you guys can take something basic like this and make challenges from it. Mediashare is a *great* idea. But also, a lot of speedruns fall into or under 18 minutes nicely. Could also be good for a two games at once challenge, if you die in Don't Scream you reset the other game, and the controls are simple enough it makes it plausable.
