In modern western culture across the world, we the people are looked apon as mere "consumers". I was made redundant a few years ago. I resented it for a while believing I had something to contribute but now, having pulled out of the game, refuse to support the multinationals. I buy my clothes at the local second hand shops, shop mostly at our local independent grocery, I'm debt free and can still put a few bob away for my next overseas holiday. I love to travel, and even when I do, still do that on the cheap..especially in S.E Asia. My morning walk in the countryside with my little dog is the best part of my day. and it costs nothing. I’m really lucky. I live in a little town that was hit hard by the rail closures in the mid 60s, but it dragged itself up, and is now full of artisan shops, bars, butchers, bakers and restaurants. We also have an Aldi within walking distance. I can get lots of what I need, good quality and local produce. It would be a shame to see all these businesses go.

I'm enjoying a " no buy" year. It sounds like some kind of deprivation but it's the opposite. I get a rush out of finding creative uses for what I already own. Shopping my pantry, cooking simple meals, baking rustic bread and such. I stay out of the shops, stay off Amazon and don't buy excess of anything. Our place is very small ( full time RV nomads) so there is no room to store extras. What a relief to not be a slave to consumerism. I think I will make a banana sandwich for supper 😊

I love simplicity of life, foods included. I knew what crisps were but toad ina hole I'd to look up. Looks good. I'm a simple food person. Grew up on peanut butter sandwiches, tinned fish on toast with mayo & onion. Not much of a shopper. I get a lot second hand or free.

Toad in the hole is just sausage cooked in what basically a big Yorkshire pudding. Sounds weird, but it’s great with a load of gravy. Tinned fish on toast is my staple breakfast. I can only eat fish, chicken and rice, so I’m a pretty simple food person, too. Good thing is, I can be in and out of the supermarket in 10 minutes. 😊❤️

Good morning Nigel. I agree. Amazon is a necessary evil these days. I just had 3 things in my basket for a week, and decided yesterday to go ahead and order them. They are items I need for house and fence repair. It's difficult for me to walk a lot in the huge stores like Home Depot and It's hard to get the help you need while there Buying online is just much easier for me since I live in a rural area South of Houston. There's a huge distribution center in Houston and I get orders really fast. My old house is held together by zip ties, duct tape and prayers! LOL Peace and love to you and Molly!💙

Amazon certainly has its place. I try to avoid it because I can’t really justify the cost when I only have a small pension. I sometimes wonder what I would do if I won the lottery. I’d probably buy Molly a new collar. 😊❤️🐕‍🦺

I love "our" walks together. When I was a kid my mother would give us sugar and butter sandwiches. Slice of white bread spread some butter sprinkle with sugar and cover with another slice of bread. We thought this was a treat. It wasn't till I was older that I learned she gave us that because that is all we had to eat. But she never let on to that. I always loved England. The times I have been fortunate enough to visit I love eating in pubs. I love the food. Thank you for the videos. All the best to you.

Just wondering what to eat after a bout of Covid. Banana sandwich will hit the spot! Grew up in Cornwall eating them. We also used to tear up some bread, crumble an Oxo cube and put boiling water on it. We were poor, so that filled us up and kept us warm in the winter. My kids (born and raised in Florida) both love beans on toast.

Beans on toast is food of the gods. I haven’t been able to eat them for 6 years because of cancer, but I treasure the memory. As kids we crumbled bread into oxo. We weren’t particularly skint, but in those days very few people had much disposable income. We also used to crumble bread into milk. We called it ‘pobs.’ 😊❤️

I remember all of those. We also had sugar melted on toast, but you HAD to wait until it cooled or you got a burn on your mouth. My favourite sandwich is egg and tomato chopped up together, we called them seaside sandwiches as we always had then when we went to the beach. Loved your post today, and I leave my Amazon basket for a while too, it’s amazing what you think you need when you actually don’t. Keep smiling 😊

You are so right. Last night I came home and made myself a chip butti. My father told me I would make anything in a sandwich. Lol. Those were the days. Always a nice cup of tea to finish my day. Living in the states may have changed me a little but I never forget my life in Bristol. Life was simple and so very enjoyable. I miss those times. Thanks for the memories. What a lovely nostalgic video, thank you Nigel. You didn’t mention my favourite (after a banana butty with thick butter on nutty brown bread) the famous chip butties. The test of a “real chip butty” is when the butter runs down your arms as you eat it! I just remembered - when I was pregnant with my first son I had a terrible craving for banana butties liberally encrusted with plain salted chips- absolutely delicious. Oh, yes, Jennifer. The ubiquitous chip butty. If I have a chip butty I automatically lean forward so that I don’t drip butter down my clothes and ruin them. The sensation of biting into one and feeling the crisp chip, soft bread and warm runny butter is something you have to experience. 😊❤️🐕‍🦺🥪🥪

I do try and shop locally but if you work full time it's tricky. When I was a student in Sheffield there was an amazing grocers called Beanies that was on my walk home and open till 7 each evening so I stopped off regularly and shopped there rather than the supermarket. But conversely another place I lived in had an amazing butchers that was open 9-5 weekdays and 9-12 Saturday mornings so I only went a couple of times because I was either working or often doing other life laundry on a Saturday morning. I'm not saying local shops should work really long hours but always thought more continental style opening times would really help with more people shopping locally.

We used to have sugar sandwiches here in Norway as well. My dad's parents didn't have much money when he grew up so a sugar sandwich, sometimes it could be sugar and a little sour cream, was a treat for him and his siblings. When I was a child he sometimes made me one. Happy memories 😊

I actually do this in shops too, I pick things up, put them in my basket, wander round a bit which gives me time to change my mind, which I do about most things, so I put them back. It seems to satisfy my brain that I've had a retail fix but I've not actually spent much at all, if anything. Win win!!

My grandad owned a pub. I remember as a kid being given smiths crisps with the blue bag in. Only plain, I think. It was great rummaging round for the bag that was always at the bottom. I used to pinch the odd bottle of Babycham, too. 😊❤️🥂

I tried to make an Amazon account last week.. I wasn't successful and kept going round in circles. I wanted a book from an author in America (Gregg Braden) and the only option given was Amazon. I was quite relieved when I failed. My son's wife has an account and she ordered it for me. I do Order from Baldwins occasionally. I used to visit their shop near the Elephant and Castle London in the late 70's. They have things I cant buy in local shops.. Also I think I am going to stop using my membership card at the Co-op! I get fed up with their e-mails asking how my visit was. Tesco and Sainsburys I don't visit anymore.

Very much agree. I almost always put something in the online basket and leave it there for a couple weeks.. then delete most things. Now you’re sparking memories - square carpets with lino round the edges! Sugar butties! (How am I not diabetic?!) Crisp butties. Apple butty. Once when I was working from 8am till 2:30am the following day, I had a Holland potato and meat pie on a bread roll! Not had a banana sarny for years but we obviously influenced our youngest daughter (33) who still has a ‘nana butty. (BTW we watched the nearly lost Molly video yesterday! Having lived in Texas for a short time I soon learned that Americans tend to use mayo and not butter on their sandwiches. Can’t beat a narna sandwich!! I’ve been trying to find a local greengrocer but the nearest is 4 miles away but I’ll still give it a go. I also watch Kalani, he’s lovely.

I live in Belper and we have a fantastic high street with a greengrocers a butchers and many gift and book shops as well as a great outdoor clothing and camping shop. Also I work for Royal mail and we live in an age of ring door bells with folk ordering tracked parcel items like bin bags and clothing pegs.

I remember working in Belper many years ago. I’m lucky to live in a small town, home to many local and artisan shops. It’s a totally different experience to living in a large conurbation with only large outlets. Local butcher, greengrocer, baker. It may cost a bit more, but it’s quality produce and it’s nice to walk out of the house and meet so many familiar faces. It’s ’community.’ 😊

I still do most of my food shopping in the local shops. About once a month I go to a supermarket for things I can't get locally - but even that is a family-run supermarket and not a big-chain one. As to food - I don't remember having mayo when I was a kid and have never liked it. My favourite butties were chip butties (that's french fries for the Americans). I don't buy online although sometimes one of my kids gets me something that I need there. But I have to really need it. Anyway - thanks for your input. As always - I agree!!

I like your rambling, Nigel - some of the best trips are side trips! Your sandwich ideas reminded me of my Grammy who grew up during the Depression. She would say to us kids when we were moping around ,"Well, I don't know about you, but *I'm going to have a lettuce sandwich!" which was toasted white bread, leaf lettuce freshly picked from the garden, and lots of mayo. "Heavy on the Mayo!" is one of her sayings that I remember the most (along with "Whoop dee DOO" 😂) So we all followed her example and made lettuce sandwiches with lots of mayo and got happy. And there is nothing more delicious in all the world than homegrown tomato sandwiches, to die for! I also learned something today - all this time, I thought crisps were cookies or crackers, but it turns out they're chips. 😄I seem to like UK cookery ideas, they seem somehow to accord with what I think is yummy and thrifty and satisfying.

Greetings Nigel, as always I find myself smiling after watching one of your videos. Sometimes we "hippie" sorts need a little validation of the beliefs and practices we've carried over the years. I've never been a material sort, and long before online shopping I would put things in the basket, walk around the store and contemplate the need vs. want question. Very often those non necessity items found their way back to the shelf. I can't get out like I used to, so online shopping has become more the norm, but I still put things in wish lists (like the old basket) and come back to them to decide what stays and what goes. So I thank you for sharing the tried and true practices of our younger days with everyone, and for validating a fellow boomer...it's comforting to know I'm not alone. ✌💓

We still eat peanut butter & banana sandwiches where I live. I've never had a Crisp Sandwich, but I can remember having mayonnaise and cracker sandwiches when I was a boy. I'm getting old, but I still love all the things I enjoyed as a child. Simple food like fried potatoes and onions, cornbread, fresh baked biscuits and pinto beans. I’m lucky. We have a coop, it’s less than a minutes walk away. I go in when I run out of milk. I like to see a smiling face across the counter, not some disinterested youth who’s holding a conversation with a colleague on the other side of the shop through a gaming headset. Also, they never re stock the baskets. That should be punishable by prison time.

Oh how I love crisp/chip/mash/pie butties. I never had fish fingers growing up, although I do enjoy a nice fish & chip shop fish butty. Thank you for bringing back some lovely childhood memories. Also memories of my dearly departed mum. She loved cheese & egg done (on metal plates) in the oven with fresh bread & butter. I also do the add stuff to my online basket then delete, save or buy as the days/weeks progress. Unfortunately, the store didn’t have what I wanted - and, needed! Consequently, I was “forced” to buy on Amazon! (I believe this new way of shopping has been masterminded by big business sharks!) “Nothing is better than simplicity,” Walt Whitman. I try to buy local but quite often I can’t find the item I want. For instance, I wanted a small metal water bottle that fits in my handbag instead of buying a bottle of water made of plastic. I ended up having to get it from Amazon. I buy very little these days and each purchase is considered for an appropriate amount of time. Do I really love it? Do I actually need it? I have cheese and crisp sarnies but I love a (chip shop) chip butty 😊

That's a fair point. As kids we used to go pea-picking. And get paid for doing it by the farmer. We were always ill on the first day, as we ate more than we put on the trailer.

I wonder if that is because the US is much more spread out and it wouldn’t be viable to stock some goods in areas that wouldn’t have a market for them. We have thousands of tiny villages here, but they are rarely more than a few miles from a town with lots of shops and supermarkets. My little town has every artisan shop you could think of: butchers, bakers, grocers. I think the whole of the UK could fit into many of your states.

Tangent all you want Nigel, I'm here for it....I've always liked peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I would usually just toast the bread, but about 25 years ago, I was in Memphis, took a tour of Elvis Presley's Graceland, and got a grilled pb & banana sandwich - delicious! The King famously loved pb & banana sandwiches....I also enjoy putting crisps (we Yanks call chips) on bologna and cheese sandwiches - yum!

Secondly, I think you are making banana sandwiches the wrong way. You slice your banana, but I mash it with a knife or fork. But you need a slightly brown banana to do that.

Nigel, you spat out that "Decathlon" as if it was one of Bertie Bott's badder beans! 😂 We found some not really expensive, quite good stuff at Mountain Warehouse in Buxton! Lovely people! When my daughter took to horses, I discovered a whole new world of riding supply and farming supply shops! Farming supply generally has a whole range of animal feeds, gardening, chemicals of all kinds(!🤔), but especially, a whole range of very functional outdoor clothing from Wellies to hunting jackets to the pointed woolly hat! My dear 85 yo MIL is now depending on a wheelchair for getting out and about for shopping and socializing! And she was afraid af 🥶 in the chair! We bought her a really warm signal orange hunting jacket (there was a men's and ladies' line) with a pattern of autumnal oak leaves all over the orange part - quite a fashion statement really! And now she doesn't even have to rummage through her purse anymore, because this lovely warm garment has lots of functional pockets! We also bought one of those vests, you can heat with a powerbank, and that has turned out to be quite the thing out in the cold and during nights when she's hurting, can't sleep and meditates, but the central heater is on night setting!

Etsy is a bit like shop local/small businesses if you shop with the proper artisans. I do like the idea of putting in a basket for a couple of weeks… My mother used to have jam or marmalade on a dry weetabix as an after school snack (50’s UK). I adore banana and jam sandwiches!

I have to be dragged kicking and screaming to buy from anywhere online. Until recently, I have always had to be extremely careful with money, so it was a case of 'lead me not into temptation'. I currently need 3 things from Amazon: a Kelly kettle, a power pack for my phone; and a battery charger. I've needed them since September ( in case of power cuts). Have I bought them yet? No. I live in a rural area and shop once a week trying to use my 'local' 'pay by weight' + greengrocer + butcher, in an effort to use as little plastic wrap and packaging as possible. If you wonder where such a paradise is, it is in Penzance in Cornwall UK. But to buy tech gear, it is a day's trip out to Truro or Amazon. ( yes, we have several 'outdoor' shops near Penzance but when I asked about a Kelly Kettle they looked at me as if I was stupid. The staff are clothes sales folk and no nothing about the camping side of their store at all, sadly). Shopping local is a matter of organising oneself and all these stores accept cash! Yeah!
