Started training calisthenics for the first time ever, this year in August, at 54 years old. Hit my first muscle up in 7 weeks. Working on the planche and handstand now… and I can tell that’s going to take a long long time (hoping to have them in the next couple years), but I can’t emphasize how much I’m enjoying the training. I had become so bored with regular weights and now I can’t wait to get to the gym every day! I sure do wish we had a gymnastics gym that had sessions for older people.

My local gymnastics club had/has parkour classes for adults. May be worth looking into. Edit: strength training is similar, but the real benefit is access to the equipment.

I'm an enthusiastic mountain hiker and my training has really helped me to move better and more efficiently over rough terrain. I don't get tired so quickly anymore. So yes it really helps to start doing gymnastics.

I started my gymnastics career 3 months ago at the age of 53, along with my wife. We have lifted weights for years, but this is new to both of us. I had never done a cartwheel in my life until that first day of class. I hurt so much that weekend, I wasn't sure if I was going back. Now I am a couple of lessons away of getting my glide kip and muscle up. We started working on back handspring progressions last week, and frankly it terrifies me, but one day I will do it! I hope I can keep this up for many years. Our class is small, usually just 6-8 adults of about age 25-35.

I started serious calisthenics a few months ago at the age of 76. It has already transformed my body shape and musculature. I think you missed out the main reason why older people should do it; it is the natural antidote to sarcopenia - loss of muscle mass with aging: my muscles are now growing in size and strength. Longevity is directly correlated to muscle mass. You mention body awareness, and there is no question my balance and mobility have improved, factors again which are strongly correlated to longevity. Do calisthenices and live longer and better!

Yes, gymnastics does require a lot of focus. I am lucky that there is a gym where I work, but all the people do there is bench pressing and treadmill, and maybe some leg curls. Most seem more interested in their phones. If I do my press handstands or backlevers, they just think I am a weird old man!

56 and going strong... The human body is meant to move so get off the couch and get active! :) Eat right, train smart and set goals. The last few years I've concentrated much of my training on calisthenics and weight training. My cardio is usually ice hockey and cycling with some stationary cardio (rowing being my favorite choice). Much of my inspiration has come from Adam's channel and a couple others so thanks! Love the lifestyle and hope all you beginners enjoy it too :) hence the (Lv2keepfit screen name). Thanks again Adam, from Ont.Canada.

Funny enough, I did gymnastics before and during the time I had started playing ice hockey when I was really young(started gymnastics at 2-3 and then hockey at 4-5). Then my parents said, you need to choose one or the other, as we didn't have a lot of money. I chose hockey as I had way more fun with it, even though it probably cost my parents more than gymnastics would have. Looking back, I wouldn't have changed my decision, but now in my 40s, I've started doing callisthenics and thoroughly love it. So much more functional than lifting weights, unless of course, you're looking for size only of course. Will I do anything fancy one day? Who knows after a few years mastering the basics, we'll see! =)

Our family grew up doing sports. We had a pull-up bar at the door to our bedroom and we competed against each other each day. I learned to walk on my hands and continued into my 40s. I also competed in swimming well into my 30s. When I turned 15, our mom brought us to the gym where I was taught how to use the "machines" and free weights. Sadly, I spent most of my years lifting weights like everyone else. I started on some "cardio equipment" to "warm up", then hit the weights. While this kept me "strong", I ended up just gaining weight. I didn't like the way I looked or felt. Last year, I noticed the "best looking" people in the gym spent most of the time on the floor - away from the equipment. I watched the way they were working out. None of them were lifting weights. They were doing mostly bodyweight exercises (yoga, Pilates, pull-ups, etc.). I also noticed they used bands and straps a lot. In fact, it seemed the "least healthy looking people" were using the cardio equipment (which I no longer use). So I switched my training. Now, I go directly to the back of the gym and spend most of my time on the floor or doing pullups on the straps. Immediately I noticed a change to my body where I look and feel so much better. I still lift weights, but this is usually at the end of my workout - as a "supplement". Nearly all of my time is using bands, straps, and cables. Now that I found your channel, I am going to download the app and begin to follow your methods. I thank God for you and people like you. Please keep up the good work.

No matter your age, you can and should train the basics - push ups, dips, inverted rows, pull ups/chin ups, squats, lunges. I don't see a reason to train for complex exercises such as muscle ups, planchet, handstand press... unless you want to impress your friends. Training for months and years to perform one of the above skills usually deters/ discourage people from being consistent, especially an older person, therefore I 'm always an advocate for the simple basic exercises, which you can scale with weights if you wish to.

If you can't find a gymnastics gym locally. Try finding a pole fitness and a aerial silk/hoop class. Not exactly gymnastics but it's darn close and easier to find.

I believe that eighty percent of ailments people suffer from can be cured by doing a regular execise program. The key word in that is REGULAR. During periods in my life when I fall have fallen out of exercising for awhile, I start small to get back into it, otherwise looking at jumping into a one/two hour work out makes me think,,I'll start tomorrow. It may sound ridiculous but I'll tell myself, just five minutes to start and in no time I am back to a regular workout.
