Love all these comments from the kids. Started Judo at 58, BJJ at 59. Now 3rd degree brown, and 2 stripe blue. Everything you said was spot on. Crash pads, and don’t randori, or spar with lower belts.

Hi, I'm in Italy. I am 40 years old and I started judo in September this year. At 37 I got my blue belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu but then I stopped because I didn't like the group. As a child I achieved green belt in traditional ju jitsu. I relate a lot to your experience. Thanks for your videos, they are very interesting.

Thanks for the video. I'm 52 and just started judo. I have 2 years of BJJ experience and a BB in Hapkido & Taiho-jutsu so my ukemi is advanced already. That helps me a lot! I lucked out and found great small local club that runs out of a church. The Sensei is great and runs a real safe program. I do have knee and hip issues, but it seems to be working out so far. I was going to do Judo to supplement my BJJ but I'm loving it so much that I'm now doing Judo 2-3 days a week and BJJ once a week. Judo is addictive.

Congrats on your progress brother!! I got my black belt in judo at age 50 just one week ago, but practiced it when I was a child until I entered college, so I just had to remember it. I also had knee problems but they have been solved since I got used to karate, that made my legs strong because of so much kicking.

I first did judo when I was in junior high at 12 years old and continued until I entered college at about 18 years old. After that I stopped and only got back to judo LAST YEAR at age 49 and then hit 50. IN the beginning it was so boring because I was only doing "ukemi", even though I also do that in aikido, but even so I kept on practicing only breakfall and ground work until I was allowed to do standing randori. After 1 year and a half practicing I partook in 2 competitions, did the "nage no kata" course and my instructor decided to recommend me to get the black belt, which happened YESTERDAY. In other words, now I'm a double black belt with a blackbelt in aikikai aikido and another in judo. I also got a yellow belt in karate. OSS

@@dylan_krishna_777 : Thanks for the kind words. I still have some way to the black belt in Karate because I´m in the 6th kyu (yellow) and must go through the 4th,3rd kyu to get the green belt, then comes the 2,1 kyu so I can get the brown belt. After that I'll get the black belt and it should take 2 more years. Wadoryu is cool because it has the jiu-jitsu part. My style (gojuryu) has some aikido techniques included.

Unfortunately, you can't really do that for Judo, even BJJ is pushing it a bit. I enjoy whatever I learn as long as I get to train. I know if I ever get hurt I will never go back to class, that's the reality for us middle age hobbyist.

You should search a club that does technical judo . That is a program where they do only drills and go easy on you on the trows and ground fighting. I have also experience in BJJ but wanted to try out Judo because of Hong's videos. So went to a judo school that have a "technical" judo program. i also was was very nervous to go because judoka's have crazy trows and can trow you to pieces , most BJJ practitioners underestimate that. For now it worked all well "Oss" ! 🤙🥋⛩️🇯🇵

What are the pro& cons and what you could achieve within a year of training? Great content as always, OG🎉 Would you say doing Randori every class for 1/3 of the class time (30 min) is a good training method for casual 30+ practitioner ? I am currently an orange belt and found that doing randori each class gets tiring as I also trained BJJ and wrestling as well, which starts to demotivate me from training 😌 ( My wrestling coach makes going LIVE as optional and I am aware that rolling is essential for BJJ) On the other hand - I have seen other dojo in my area that only have Randori class once a week, which appears to be a better approach in my pov as other classes during the week are more technical focus with no pressure of doing Randori, would love to hear your take on this as a new born black belt (Congratz ! 🥋)

First off you need to ensure they have a spring loaded floor. Second start with ukemi and perfect that. Beginners should train with higher belts preferably Brown or black they can protect you and themselves the best. Last and most important your instructor must be willing to let you go a a pace that is right for you. I am 60 still regularly practice judo hoping to get my brown belt soon and hardly ever do randori kata is fine and you can load without throwing or being thrown.

Hey Hong, can you do a video about the pros and cons of traditional Japanese jujutsu as a possible alternative to judo for us middle-aged guys who are worried about injuries? From what I've read, there's hardly any live sparring in JJJ, so the injury risk is a lot lower. I know judo is better than JJJ in a self defense situation, but surely JJJ is better than nothing? Thanks in advance, and keep up the good work!

Judo is not better than JJJ. Judo is a sport derived from JJJ. Both have different intents one was developed during a time when there was à considerable amount of war and confrontation; the other Judo was developed for the benefit of Jujutsu, because Jujutsu was in huge decline (because of its association to samurai, yakuza…) and professor Kano wanted it to be saved. To be ultised and respected as a part of Japanese history and culture. This is why he purposely placed in Judo the original Jujutsu kata to learn and study as Judoka progresses up the ranks. Long story short Judo is not better than Jujutsu the application is different. Judo Aikido and Kendo are in the same category of purpose the ‘Do’

All the way to brown, because its the coach that decides and theres techniques you have to know for each belts. Judo has a solid structure and black belt is the beginning of the journey, but it still represents a lot in terms of knowledge, skill wise, you can execute the basics and understand the mechanics and are qualified to teach them. Fighting is a part it but not as emphasized as bjj.

Thank you for the informative replies. I watch your channel religiously and love your content and how straightforward you are. One of the reasons I’m aspiring to learn Judo is that I feel I’d have a complete education in grappling and it would help me advance in BJJ. Is getting thrown really as scary as it looks? I remember you had a story about getting thrown into a 360 and you landed on your neck. Travis Steven’s talked about his multitude of injuries he’s suffered from practicing and Judo. You and Travis seem to share the opinion as well, that BJJ is MUCH safer. But I really do believe that Judo is not only better than BJJ, but it may be the best, most applicable art to real life. Combined with BJJ, it’s line having a Doctorate in grappling right? Sorry for the rambling.
