Thanks brother! I’m close to your age and really feeling the guillotine chokes these days. I tell my partner in advance that I will tap early, and about any injuries I have, and at what speed I’m looking to roll at. And I don’t have issues sitting out a roll if something feels a bit off in my body. Like you mentioned, strength training and stretching are both super important. So important that I’ve laid off the martial arts a bit in order to incorporate more strength and flexibility work. I do 4 days a week of resistance training, followed by stretching after each session. I do a maximum of 4 days a week of martial arts as well; two days striking and two days grappling. And yes, if my joints aren’t feeling up to it I have no issues just drilling and sitting out the sparring. Some days I just show up and watch the class, because we can still absorb knowledge just by watching what’s being taught. Good stuff brother!

Great video. +1 here on the Supple Leopard book recommendation. My wife makes fun of me for reading a book with such a silly title but don't let it fool you. It's a serious book packed with tons of useful concepts that as Hong said, are very rarely taught elsewhere.

imagine a life where you do nothing because you're constantly in fear of injuring yourself or destroying your body. You have to live without fear of the future because the future is not guaranteed. Do what you enjoy and don't over do it. I suppose BJJ, or any martial art, will cause injury sometimes...but the question is, what would the alternative injury be if we all sat on our asses watching TV 24/7.

How to not let BJJ destroy your body: replace BJJ with Judo 😂 Jokes aside. Like OG Fitness recommends, Stretch and joint prep and strength training is a must for all athletes. Even if you lift %60-%70 of your PR. It gets those books and crannies and muscle imbalances from martial arts sparring. Whenever you see professional NBA or NFL players highlight videos, sometimes you see them strength training before practice. Sometimes even after games, because they found that strength training during season into the playoffs helps the players perform Better. Combat athletes should do the same! The trouble with BJJ guys is they depend on the quick stretches before class and that’s it. Then they spar in and out all day for months then Bam! Injury
