My favorite part about the examination quotes from the characters is listening to Maxwell's quotes. He was basically the god of the constant before you kicked him off of the throne so he is always giving little tidbits of lore when examining certain things, like how when you kill the special hounds they drop gems, so when Maxwell examines a fire hound he says "I put fire gems in them as a joke". By far my favorite is when you examine a crow he says "I have no idea how those got here" like they're just anomalies

A couple fun bits of trivia: The characters names all starting with W wasn't intentional at first. If I recall they came out with Wilson, Willow, Wendy and Wolfgang in development. Realized they started with W, so they decided to keep the running joke. Charlie is the Darkness. Kinda. It's complicated. This all sprung from a joke from the devs though! Originally the files in the game for the thing that bites you in the dark were labeled as Charlie. Not because they had a character planned, but as a reference to the internet classic "Charlie bit my finger". And when the game's story started getting fleshed out, they kept the name!

So the story of don’t Starve is actually really underrated even by other fans, the animated trailers give alot of backstory and characterization and certain events and bosses clearly allude too a bigger picture while each individual character has their own intricate backstory and personality to suit their design and gameplay. Honestly the story is hard to work out from the gameplay alone but still somehow makes me more invested in the gameplay, I would definitely recommend watching all the animations. Even that’s just the tip of the iceberg to actually see the story for yourself you don’t just need to survive you need to be skilled enough to explore and analyze inspection diolog from important characters, although admittedly most of the proven story happens before the game. Also the original is much more scary and has an actual campaign you could play. Also my username is a very abscure pun on don’t Starve

I personally think that Don't Starve is the best *exploration survival* game out there. The constant is an incredibly harsh and hostile place, but it has rules. You'll die over and over again to being blindsided by a new thing but every time you come back you'll be a little more ready. You'll find one more crock pot recipe, one more weapon, one more thing you can interact with that works to your advantage and eventually given time you can become a master of the Constant to the point where you're cranking out the same kinds of megabases you'd see in something like Minecraft or Terraria. You're encouraged to explore the *mechanics* of the game as well as the world, and it's all the more rewarding because of it.

Well said. It’s also impressive that even the smallest rules you ignore regarding surviving the constant will get you killed no matter how good you are at the game. @thewitchidolsachika66822 ай бұрын
what I don't like about dst building aspect is that it's kinda closed by a pay/time wall, since if you want to make a beatiful megabase, you want alot of skins. in terraria or mc you don't need to buy 5 skin packs to simply BE ABLE to make something cool, all blocks, furniture and walls are accessible to you any time if you can make them.

@angyl You mentioned questioning the darkness. To guide you towards a tiny snippet of the lore: The darkness in Don't Starve has a name. And the darkness is linked to Maxwell. He was very important, and in Don't Starve Together, he's still important, but not as important as the darkness. If you play him, and follow the breadcrumbs, you'll learn what I mean. Happy hunting! P.S. If you like Webber, you should know that he can upgrade spider nests and make them his friends. Webber's friends also will be friends to everyone, instead of attacking you guys at random. They'll help keep you safe. P.S.S. Somewhere on every don't starve map is a location nicknamed Queen's Rock. You'll know if you find it because there'll be a whole bunch of spider dens covering a real big area. That area is Webber's safe space. He can chill there if bad things happen to the main base.

Great video, as someone with over 1000 hours in this game this was quite funny to watch. The constant (that's what the Don't Starve world is called) makes it very clear it hates the player by the amount of danger at every corner. Watching this video reminded me of the huge difference in how beginners vs. experienced players handle everything the game can throw at one. One of the best parts about this has to be the fact that the skill gap doesn't stem from very precise inputs but rather knowledge and good planning.

I do however know full well what you feel like not knowing anything about the game. By the way. The "Unknown darkness" that you mentioned is called "Charlie". Charlie = the thing that kills you when there's no light. It's a female character with an entire backstory that you can find out about in the animation videos that Klei posts. You can learn a little bit of every character. Edit: There are many mods like "Geometric placement", "Zoom+", "combined status" (it helps show you what seasons you are in and how far the next one is), "craft pot", "simple health bar DST", "show me (origin)" and many more that can help make your life a little bit easier. I personally use the ones that I have mentioned and they help in all kinds of ways. You can also get the "gesture wheel" if you like the little emotes that your characters are able to do. The best part of dst videos such as this is that all this discussion, beholding, and praise of the game and everything it does… is for like 30% of the entire game. There is SOOO MUCH CONTENT and the effort and fun goes up and up and up, difficulty never truly slowing down (until its day 9999)
@im_skrunkly9 ай бұрын
why is terraria in the thumbnail. its not a survival game.
@TheBasedTyrant7 ай бұрын
Yeah, Minecraft and Terraria aren't survival games, they're sandbox/adventure games with a few survival mechanics that are immediately forgettable. The problem with the survival genre is that most game developers only make them for budgetary reasons, and the more of a budget they get, the more they develop into something else because hardcore survival games don't really appeal to a general audience. A great example of this is We Happy Few, another procedurally generated survival game which was crowd funded for a while, the developers even said they made it a survival game because it would be cheaper, then they started working with the publisher Gearbox and had the money and resources to expand the games narrative at which point the focus shifted away from hardcore survival. Klei Entertainment is different because they always intended to make a survival game, even though DST is more forgiving with death it still isn't free to revive.

Had a server up for a few months years ago that the caves had half of the exists leading to another cave and half of the other caves exits went to a different over world map. Most players that stayed on my server got lost for days near the beginning. They would come out in the wrong over world and struggle their way back to the Florid Postern, but the starter base wasn't there. It was in the server description that the server had two of each map. One would think that exiting into a cave from a cave and the new cave having an ocean would have gotten some people to read the server description, they did have to pass the server description to get the discord info.

As someone with over 1k hours who was following and playing the game before RoG dlc - i'm really happy to see you guys find joy in this game and even how harsh it is. Many new people i try to get into the game quite quickly get discouraged or try to get to the 'cool stuff' while ignoring survival aspect (therefore they barely play the game) This game is difficult and tedious, but at the same time i think that's why it can bring so much satisfaction. Everything goes against you, so when you do survive and even dominate, you know it's because of your work, skill and cleverness.

DST lore is very obscure, in the old days you wold need do things like photoshop singular frames from trailers or posters to get a link. sadly a loot if this is lost and as far as i know there ins't a complete source. -the character names stating with W was originally a coincidence turned in a internal joke btw maxwell in the game code is "waxuell" and in the lore is just his stage name, his real name is William. as starting point i strongly recommend the character introduction (and reworks) even to people not interested in lore. some tips: -read the character specific crafts they hint the mechanics and play style. -as fun it is mess around with new character i strongly recommend stick to one until you get the hang of dst core mechanics and loop. -I also recommend avoid certain characters as their mechanics deeply trnaform their play (wes, wanda, wormwood, warly) if you wish i can elaborate more on each character spoiler free or not

you are supposed to learn as you play, like die,repeat,die,repeat learning every few things everytime, everything feels very intuitive is one of the best games i played, the less you wiki about the game the better you experience is, the more you wiki the more you ruin the learning process.

If there game that is an outlier I would recommend, it would be Rimworld. The game is like if the sims, don’t starve and any tactical rpg were blended in blender. (Which is the weirdest mixed I have ever seen.)

The gothic, whimsical nature and artsyle not only call back to Dr Seuss's work, but reflects more similarly to a similar work produced around the same time as Suess that was much more grim and gothic: Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast.

I remember when the devs added the scrap book and the points of interest system, some players were fearing it would make the game "hand holding the players" I'll admit I also feared it would tone down the whole "throwing new players out of the nest" but I'm glad that it seems those systems didn't have that big impact on new player's experience

I spent ~300 hours on Don't Starve in 2015-2016 and I've been playing DST for about a week with my sister; it's taking us some time to (re)learn or (re)discover the different characters, mechanics, as well as mobs, plants, crafting recipes and bosses that were released during the past few years. I feel like coop is harder but really enjoyable nonetheless!
