Always have grass and logs on you + often sticks and flint/gold. Build many drying racks and several crock pots and learn how to make the best recipes. Get a bird cage and farms, feed dragon fruit to the bird for seeds. Dragon pie is cheap and great for health and hunger. Get a heat stone for winter. Try to set up camp near beefalos and pig villages. Learn how to use pigs. Learn how to aggro creatures against each other so you don't have to fight. Choose Wolfgang, he is essentially an Easy Mode.

Planting pine cones before a lief appears won't prevent him from spawning. It's an inevitable thing. I find it best when I've cut down quite a few trees, befriend some pigs and let them go to town on a forest. It'll spawn whenever they get to the limit, and you will get some free meat/pigskin when he kills them. The lief will remain neutral to you, unless you attack it/cut down a tree while it's around.

if you unlock the second character willow, you wont need to make a any type of fire, when its dark, after 3-4 seconds she starts a fire of her own, so, that char is epic :D

Sips, who gives you tips? Treeguard has a stedy spawn chance of 1.3% and he wont spawn before day 4... Besides it's easy to make him neutral to you by planting some picons. I have one in my base, he protects me from hounds ^.^
