I think the cotl crossover was the worst survival dst update of all time since it felt so uninspired. It was just a basic campfire upgrade with a lamb skin.

I love dst and ive put 1000s of hours in the game. After they got bought out, the game just turned into a milking machine. With every underwhelming unpdate comes a slew of paid for cosmetics and twitch drops. Their focus shifted and it shows. We have had some decent updates since then, but there is just a lack of direction and heart nowadays.

My concern about the direction of the game comes down to them dragging things out over just "finishing" it - "it" being the lore and gameplay loop. They can continue to update the game all they want, however, when it's so painfully obvious at all the pieces are on the board yet no one is moving in for the "Checkmate" it leaves us with a week of hype, sure, but nothing more until the next week of it. Enough is enough!

Not surprised because while the Rift stuff is rather interesting it loses its luster almost immediately. Why? Many reasons I can think of actually but it all comes down to the game (lorewise, gameplay-wise, etc.) simply not progressing at all for nearly 2 years.

Even as someone who likes water based games (and game updates), this still feels less like a update and more like a free skin bundle. However, I guess the boat racing mini game could give more reason to craft water based items like the sail. And honestly I think not very many people actually explore the ocean even though its a large part of the map.

I've been a proponent of arguing that Solo DS is the better experience for about 1.5 years but now it's truly definitive - because it's complete, has three DLCs that can all connect to one another at once, and feels polished!

I peek back in on DST every now and then and I've gotta say... things aren't looking good. I mostly quit DS when I realized that after the first 50-60 days or so, the game just becomes a base building simulator. The survival mechanics are interesting, but very simple and as soon as you figure out how to keep your feet under you, the progression becomes boring. It makes sense then that as soon as Klei got the core mechanics of their game figured out, their updates to the game keep becoming less and less interesting. They're adding onto a game which, in my opinion, becomes a chore long before you get to experience any of their new stuff. The beginning of the game is by far the most exciting and I usually play single player just for Wheeler's dodge mechanic which makes combat _actually enjoyable._ Why have all these bosses when none of them are any fun to fight? But I digress. That's my Don't Starve rant. I really wish the game was more survival and adventure focused and not novelty focused. Novelty just wears off too fast.

I’m happy with the boat related content so I’ll be positive about it and say it’s feels cheaper to make the dragon boat parts and I like that the new smaller boat doesn’t lose durability over time; the update may not for everyone but it doesn’t diminish the quality of the game, maybe this event will last till the Dragon Boat Festival seeing how the Winter’s Feast continued passed Christmas

We're pointing out some objectively wrong takes and directions for the game as a whole with this Update in particular being the most recent example of Klei's questionable decisions. And you know what mitigates that? Communication, but they aren't even doing that either.

Hard to summarize given your inexperience with recent updates and progression but just know that said updates and progression has been very clearly dragged on by Klei - even though they said they would finish things after spending an entire year, and I quote, "setting the stage" - and have released unpolished. It's all just "Stuff" with no substance beyond the first week of initial hype with a clear end in sight however Klei refuses to let the game have its sunset.

@@TheBeard777yeah no im just taking the piss, the only thing in the video i disagree with is DST's Eye for an Eye update being significantly worse than Terraria's (havent played CotL so i cant speak for that one) Deerclops in Terraria is a kinda mid boss thats literally impossible to lose to because it never despawns for some reason, which pretty much invalidates the quality of the fight immediately. really weird especially since its one of the few DST bosses that CAN actually despawn lmao. the Constant secret seed is basically nothing and becomes irrelevant 15% of the way through the game, and there was a few cool pre hardmode weapon drops and an awfully sprited and overpowered magi. thats literally it in terms of DST content other than pets and vanity stuff. Yeah, the Twins in DST really shouldve at least had Deerclops' laser attack or something, but theyre still a fun boss imo. and the Eye of Terror is a fun earlygame boss with a really, really damn useful drop which is already more than can be said for Terraria's Deerclops. they were both solid updates and its very unfair to say Klei wasted the material Terraria gave them

CoTL added Webber with unique perks, paid homage to RoG in how we unlock Webber, gave the game an entirely new set of Rules in eating and sleeping, a brand new gamemode, base decor and more. DST got two turfs and a sanity fire that is way, way too expensive and all of it is locked behind Summer and Summer alone. Yup, keep simping for Klei my friend. They have had zero respect for the other Developers and their titles through their works.

Did klei's last update beyond the year of the dragonfly go badly? I think one event update that isn't good is forgivable honestly. No need to grab the pitchforks. Yes, the update was bad. Nobody can argue with that, but this is an overreaction. Many great updates but one bad one? Ditch the company immediately. Also, come on. The crossover events are bad? I mean cult of the lamb maybe, but the twins are a creative boss implementation. Even the cult of the lamb update wasn't horrible. It added a new firepit which was fun. I didn't ditch the Company immediately, nor will I, and I made that very clear in every discussion video of late. Furthermore, yes, I have seen many Crossover Updates in many games - especially those that have used Klei's IP specifically - and many of them have been far better than what we've seen both in terms of content and references. The Cult of The Lamb Update is an embarrassment; All locked behind Summer no matter what, a fire pit that requires three expensive upgrades for a small sanity regeneration, and two turfs - that's it! Compare that to what Cult itself did and once more it would appear that Klei does the bare minimum lately, something that many recent CONTENT UPDATES themselves have shown the Community more and more of themselves! You're missing all the 1.5 years of context behind this video, friend.

CNY updates are throwaway content that shows us an interesting spin or creative take on the culture. Reworking Dragonfly as you have suggested in previous videos, which I have enjoyed, would be more appropriate for a major update. Year of "Dragonboat" content brings attention to an often under-appreciated aspect of the game. I personally suck at sailing and many players do not leave land ever. This is a great way to reintroduce it to new and old players. Last word of advice, stay way from SJW outrage and such. So what it's a different festival and it's winter. There are different seasons in the game and dragon boating makes fun-ish content. I have done dragon boating in my youth and personally didn't enjoy it, but I see nothing inappropriate about this event. It's a game about shadows and chimeras after all. There is no point in to arguing about cultural accuracy and you gain nothing from highlighting bigotted comments from the forum. Just chill bro

@@TheBeard777 Long story short some time after working on Spaced Out DLC for Oxygen Not Included and merging both codebases (base game and DLC) Klei announced that they are dropping the DLC format cause it wasn't working out for them and they are switching to free updates and wanted everyone to enjoy the content. Followup announcement with a roadmap confirmed this is what they will go with and even teased things like additional Asteroid starts , new biomes even simulation features. Fast foward to now they now announced that they are switching back from free content updates to content packed in paid DLCs - and even dared to say that DLCs were always the best choice for this game (which was a complete 180 to what they stated previously) and also confirmed that said DLCs will contain things like new starting asteroids , biomes , creatures (most of what they mentioned they teased would be released as free content updates) and from the looks of these DLCs will have much less content per DLC than the whole Spaced Out DLC has and Klei plans to release these smaller content DLCs often calling it "modullar DLCs" "expanding" the game. - Sorry this is as short and as i could make this summary lol. I don't get how people are expecting huge updates out the gate, when Lunar New Year events have been and always will be something that just adds something small and fun to interact with. Year of the Beefalo was a huge update because beefs needed some QOL, so what better time to do that but the Year of the Beefalo? Year of the Carrat didn't add anything permanent; Year of the Bunnymen added ONE permanent feature, and it's entirely cosmetic. Most of the Chinese New Year Updates are centered around themselves and don't normally add QOL. Year of the Dragonfly falls exactly in line with most Chinese New Year Updates, just because it doesn't directly interact with something that is a RAID BOSS and is passively AGGRESSIVE maybe is a good idea. They don't need to rework Dragonfly, wall method or not, you still need skill and to use your brain to beat her. Update's fine, stop fear mongering just because the update isn't huge, there's still 10 Months left and 4 Updates to go, this is just an appetizer. Also: DST got the bigger end of the stick with the Terraria crossover. The content just fits better within the gameplay loop of DST instead of weapons that instantly get outclassed in the proggression line and a few cosmetics, what are you on about?

The problem isn't that the YOTD is a small update, but it has nothing to do with the dragon fly, but with boats instead, a boss rework or something whould be a bit much, but at least a dragonfly reskin. And as a terraria player, the stuff from the crossover are very good in their part of progression. And the cult of the lamb crossover basicly added nothing of big use (3 skins, and a campfire reskin).

To continue, the Terraria Team added far, far more to their gameplay than Klei did by sheer size AND mechanics - and funny enough Klei has invalidated the entire loot pool of that Crossover already due to their inability to plan updates instead of just adding "stuff" and buffs (Wigfrid Shield). These are objective facts, quit playing with words to try and make a point where there isn't any - especially when I cover the points you're trying to bring up in the first place! 🤔🤨

The Year of the Bunnymen added insanely good foods, unique farms for otherwise hard-to-obtain loot, carrot spinning, a buff to sleeping and more! The Year of the Beefalo literally altered beefalos forever, The Year of The Carrat didn't have much but the event itself was involved, The Year of the Catcoon added a lot of potential for nugget farming, an animal minigame, and a way to find biomes unlike anything we've seen before, etc., etc. I think people are misinterpreting how important these Updates have been in the past no matter how small they were on paper - so for The Year of the DRAGONFLY to be this...?!?!?!

Has been, but folk haven't been noticing it at the level they should be quite yet. Klei should've sunset things years ago to prepare for the end NOW but I think it's too late, but at least others are starting to see it when before they were just desperately holding out hope for things to improve.

I've never been blind to Klei's shortcomings. In fact, I'm one of - if not the only - Creator to have publically called them out all the time over the years. It started WITH the ocean content and here we are 4+ years later still carrying on similar conversations because they didn't learn from their best and instead went with their worst intentions.

DST is 8 years old and they still give free updates.... chill out man the game has to slow down at some point. If this update was in the first 3 years sure but dude 8+ years time to just be thankful for anything or move to a new game.

The Year of events have always been stupid nothings that had 0 impact on the game whatsoever, the one and ONLY exception to this was the Year of the Beefalo where they used the opportunity to overhaul taming. And since that Year of event, you and many others have been complaining that the Year of events since are let downs and they should have done more to impact the game. The Year of events NEVER had an impact on the game prior to Beefalo. Gobbler, nothing, Varg, nothing, Pigman, nothing, Rabbitman, nothing, Carrat, nothing, Catcoon, nothing, and now, Dragonfly, nothing. Its almost like they were never meant to have any impact on the game and just be fun little side activities to waste a bit of time on. Also, what part of the Dragon Boat racing is culturally inaccurate? The only thing (maybe) is that the race isnt in a straight line. I have annual Dragon Boat races on the lake in the city I live in, hosted by descendants of people who fled China during the communist take-over (so REAL Chinese culture) and there is nothing off or out of place, the only thing maybe missing would be a drum you can place on the boat to increase the paddling speed of people paddling the boat if someone is actively playing the drum. Beyond that and the race not going in a straight line, they adapted classic dragonboat races with the systems they have in place and arguing they should have built entirely new systems for a stupid little mini-game gimmick is the peak of demanding far too much.
