Hey guys, been loving the pod, and your new studio setup looks wicked. Only wanted to give a point of constructive feedback that the mics are coving your faces quite a bit with the way they’re positioned in relation to the camera. If there’s any way to change that it might might for a more polished viewing experience for those of us who don’t just listen. Cheers guys, keep up the awesome work! 👊

I went to a toxic af gym for a year, took 6 months out and found another one that I’ve been at for 8 months and really enjoy 🙏

Hey guys, I'm a 38 year old white belt back in the States. Very thankful for your input and all your content. It has helped me get a grasp of the ju-jitsu culture. It's been a month and no serious injuries yet, but I have the sick time built up just in case.👍

Interesting point about giving someone the respect of a hard roll. It’s hard for me bringing intensity to the right level. I’m probably too respectful of higher belts, not wanting to be spazzy. And too kind to lower belts letting them work etc. People around my level and weight I’m fine to send it. But for sure I’ll be considering the respect thing about bringing my best.

After three years and 3 gyms, I have come to the conclusion that there might be many "great gyms" but not necessarily that many "great gyms for you". If you're asking the question: "Should I try a different gym" the answer is: "Yes, absolutely you should".

I swapped and went really well, didn't fit too well in the previous gym.

Ok sorry but a little correction is needed here. I know couple of guys (no grappling gifted background, but nogi for a few yrs prior) who visited this new academy and after 3-4 months they got their blue belts. Of course, their history unfolds as follow afterward, one left a bit later, the other one improved greatly and stayed, and the other one had to develop a blue belt's game cause some critical skills were badly missing in his game. Just wanted to clarify that point.

Love this podcast so much. So often I feel I side with joey and his responses are hilarious, “like what’s wrong with you??”. If you sense people are not liking you and seems like a regular occurrence doesn’t that seem not right on your part? Great point about being a good training partner, and it’s tricky with those that speak. I’m always open especially with higher belts but in sparring I’ve found it unhelpful mid sparring (mt), been given a tip especially when we’re going toe to toe. Calling it is out is essential imo

When I trained up in rural Maine in the US everyone was very welcoming and wanted to roll since they don't get drop-ins often. We don't have too many drop-ins at my gym either but I'd want to roll with anyone who likes the sport enough to go to a foreign gym when they travel!

We have a few gyms in our town and ours is the biggest. I find myself going to other open mats and I don't think I'm particularly welcome but I'm lucky to have a great home base so I dont care about how I'm treated when I cross train

Is it okay to wear your prior gyms rash guard at a new gym you’ve started at?
@hasanhaytham4455Ай бұрын
Nah brother it feels disrespectful ngl I'd just buy a rash guard that's neutral Like just black or something that has nothing to do with a gym

I just switched gyms. tried Gracie Barra for a year and it wasn’t for me. Much happier at my new gym, more adult vibe
@rozennbergfridi9206Ай бұрын
Barra is more cult like right?
@christianferreris9927Ай бұрын
@@rozennbergfridi9206 kind of. People that trained there sure did love to wear Gracie Barra gear everywhere. Like Gracie Barra (not Jiu jitsu) became part of their identity. And on top of that, the merch and gear was expensive as hell. So they spend quite a lot of money just to rep Gracie Barra out in the streets. I mean, almost every single article of clothing was GB. I never understood it. Idk if that’s cult-like, but it is pretty fucking lame.
@paulmcilravey2072Ай бұрын
I am a member of a Gracie Barra gym. GB has standards and etiquette. I appreciate that it’s not for everyone and people have the right to choose depending on what feels right for them. Some of the nonsense, that gets banded around about GB is complete nonsense. The coach at my GB does not push the constant need to upgrade clothing. They do a beginners package which includes your GI and rash guard and as long as it’s functional and clean you can wear it for years. Whilst the the clothing is expensive, I’ve picked up pretty much new gears from Vinted and EBay for less than half price so there are ways means. Everyone pays the same monthly fee, no discounts for anyone, that way everyone is treated the same. The gym is spotless every time you train. The whole ethos is build around respect not only for you coach/professor but for your teams mates.

Owners of our gym sacked the trainer …30 of us left as he mistreated the coach ,we left to a near by gym which actually was started by previous trainer in that gym…basically was training with all the people I was training with before…

This happens a lot. A head coach gets outted by the owner who you’ve bond with so the team follows

Was training for 7 months at one gym found out it was a Mcdojo 😂 plus the main black belt has a bad rep rolling with women. Cheating on his wife with the gym manager. These guys were young too 26 and 30. World class team down the road is were I moved. I mean I trained back in the day but when I walked in and they were training white belts using ibjjf black belt matches as the lesson 😮

Maybe I misunderstood, but as a white belt I didn't start BJJ to teach new guys a few months after I join. I barely know what the hell is going on and want to learn more myself. But I'm expected to bring a new guy up? Sorry, but hell no. Us white belts shouldn't be teaching at all! Also, why do we have to worry about all these internal politics and social dynamics. I just want to learn bjj!
@ThisGuyWithDaHairАй бұрын
At my school, if 2 white belts were trying to drill together and the coach saw it a little late, he'd straight up stop us and swap us with some higher belts cause he didn't wanna see a trainwreck LOL. Teaching certainly helps you indentify micro details about moves a bit better but also requires skills that most people probably don't even have developed yet, ESPECIALLY at white belt. I personally enjoy showing a trial class guy/newer white belt some pointers but, do not think is should be REQUIRED because we might be doing more harm than good if we aren't experienced in a certain area and just decide to spew word vomit to another white belt 😂 . If your instructors give a shit about you at all, they should be preventing this scenario before it even manifests IMO but if not, theres definetly no shame in politely asking a white belt if its cool to pair up with some higher belts instead.
