I genuinely think Ben's idea for a Producers homage movie is brilliant. Call it Tom Cruise Must Die, have Cruise play himself, the plot is the producers convincing him to do increasingly dangerous stunts for the insurance money. Not only is there loads of scope there for a The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent style meta comedy...you can also just have Tom Cruise doing loads of mad stunts throughout the movie. You can end the movie with Tom Cruise dying in some horrific comedy accent. Who wouldn't watch that?

2:14 - Nothing like the curse of Norman Doors to show why oversimplifying designs can be bad. People arent using the door wrong, the door isn't communicating how it needs to be operated clearly.
@ImminDragon11 ай бұрын
It can be very clearly conveyed and people will still screw it up. I've seen people lean into pull handles and complain that it hurt, when the giant lettering says what to do. They just didn't think before they acted.
@PierceArner11 ай бұрын
@@ImminDragon _Ah, but you shouldn't HAVE to think about how to use a door._ It should be unmistakably obvious, and that's why design oversimplification creates confusion by making distinctly different types of doors no longer instantly recognizable from one another. (There's a whole reason that the term "Norman Doors" exists and *The Design of Everyday Things* is a worthwhile read written by the person the term is named after). It's failing what's called stress-case design where something simple should be as streamlined as possible for someone who's least able to focus cognitive effort into a simple task. Streamlining and simplifying aren't the same thing and often lead to this kind of problem when they're applied incorrectly, and make for spectacularly awful designs.
@DubhghlasMacDubhghlas11 ай бұрын
@@PierceArner doors shouldn't swing both ways at times because it limits what you can do with that space, that is the only way to fix that issue but creates another issue. People should just pay attention and not run on auto pilot mode. Stop blaming the door on clear operator error. Seems like you would blame a clean glass wall/door for someone walking into it rather than the person.
@PierceArner11 ай бұрын
@@DubhghlasMacDubhghlas No one said doors needed to swing both ways, _only that it should be immediately apparent which direction the door opens._ Have you ever seen anyone try to push open the door on a fridge rather than pull it? No, because it's clear how that needs to be operated, and so _you never need to think about it._ Operator error occurs when the object doesn't convey how to use it clearly enough to be automatically understood. You should never have to stop and think about a door before using it, and functioning on "autopilot" for simple, common things that you encounter every day is the baseline expectation of a good design - _because they're meant to be intuitive._ Genuinely, I'd recommend the book *The Design of Everyday Things* even if you're not interested in design, because it helps correct a lot of misunderstandings around how common design works & what makes it fail.
@DubhghlasMacDubhghlas11 ай бұрын
@@PierceArner signage coves that. Plus where are the hinges shows that. If you think every door should be pull you would have to have doors swing both ways. Because a door can be pulled only one way with regular hinges. BTW with the fridge door people know due to the hinges aka how the door operates and people do think about it is just not conscious thought. And with the freezer on top of the fridge I have see people open the wrong door... due to auto pilot. I seen people try to pull a door with a pull door where it is clearly a due a push bar. That should be clear but people are on auto pilot and don't think. Which is why people have a lot of car accidents by not paying attention. The military does what you say people should do and people still screw it up somehow. No matter how easy you make it to use people will still find away to screw it up. And just because there is book supporting your view doesn't mean it is right. There are books on supporting all sort of non sense out there. That is conformation bias.
