Another important reason not to do so-act of telling others produces the same dopamine boost as if you had finished, decreasing our likelihood of completing a project, achieving a goal, etc.

If you don't have 30 min: - Silence can be powerful; Marcus Aurelius advised keeping plans to oneself to focus energy on goals without outside influence or validation. - Stoicism promotes inner happiness and resilience, suggesting that sharing goals prematurely can invite external criticism, which may hinder progress. - By not announcing our intentions, we can surprise others with our achievements, allowing actions to speak louder and reveal successes with humility. - Keeping plans private helps cultivate patience and allows for a thoughtful approach, ensuring actions are aligned with long-term vision for greater success. - Stoicism encourages self-reliance and authenticity; by not seeking external approval, we remain true to our intentions and build inner strength.

I am a writer, and I was once working on an important writing project. I was excited and I told my sister about the project. I let everyone know that I would be unavailable on Monday's and Tuesday's, so I could focus 100% on my writing. Guess what days my sister would call me, message me, (repeatedly) and turn up at my house? After the 50th time of reminding her, that I had said I would be busy on those days, I realised she was purposely trying to sabotage my plans. I pretended that I had dropped the project and she stopped bothering me on those days. I was still writing. I just didn't tell her about it, or any of my plans, ever again. Never tell anyone your plans. Just show them your results.

absolutely. That's what happened to me. As an aspiring musician, the more people found out about what I was doing (because I kept it pretty secret in the beginning) the more it temporarily validated my dreams by hearing stuff like "woah thats so cool" even when you know it might not be genuine. Whereas before I felt like I had to quietly work towards my goal and become a better musician before earning any sort of outward validation whatsoever, and to get better before letting people judge me, I was just handed the validation for a short moment and it led to complacency and false confidence. Longterm I've realized how much its messed with my head, and now I desire validation from people around me more than I ever have in my life.

the worst part about this is in modern world today you need connections to even make a living. looking for a job? almost everyone will turn you down unless you know someone and tell your plans to get a job. wanna start business? this is almost impossible to do when you're telling nobody about it. to get funds from investor or loan from banks you need to tell them your business plans otherwise literally everyone will reject your ideas. the only loophole of this is when you living a crime by robbing someone, pulled bank heist, or stealing. telling your plans will get you in prison.

Well... talking to people allows you to validate your plans ASAP and helps to avoid waste (time, money, health, relationships etc.). People are planning and dreaming to much nowadays and not doing much. Do fast, fail fast and redo. On the other hand I agree that self-improvement goals should not be a matter of external validation and that's what managers in corporations tries to do. It is not enough to downstream OKRs, now you are expected to set personal goals on top of that. That's too much for sure.

There is also the pettiness of others to take into account. "How dare he do the thing i wanted to do but never tried to do?" And then out of spite try to either dissuade you from persuing or move against you to ruin your progress. if the plan is new, it's easy to disrrupt. But if it's well rooted it's harder to convince you to abandon them. This doesnt mean dont tell anyone, but select very well who you talk to about it, someone very close who will not outright try to plant doubt. Or someone who is knowledgeable in the subject, as it is important to have feedback from someone who knows what they're talking about, to avoid making mistakes you didnt know you'd make. It might be your approach is not the best, but not getting any feedback at all from trusted people, it will take longer to realize this

I became more successful after telling people my plans and goals. It forced me to be accountable so as not to be embarrassed constantly by never following through. Also, it forced me to relax a little bit. By constantly following through on what I said I would do, if on the off chance I did NOT complete what I said I would, I still knew I gave it my all and therefore was chill about it regardless. That also signals to people that you're fine with failure, it happens.

Different people need different things. I couldn't get more than 9 mins into the video. There's a whole section about how sharing your plans makes you vulnerable. While this is important for strategic reasons, most emphasis is on the emotional ones. It's hiding from the real problem: having your self worth be dependent on what others perceive. This is only strengthened in the romanticisation of surprising people. For them to be in awe and admiration, which you receive with grace and humility? I thought the point was not seeking validation in others! So much of stoicism consists effectively of defense strategies for your psyche. Engaging in those doesn't free your mind, it traps it while making it feel safe, powerful, Important, in control etc. However there is wisdom at the heart of it. With not sharing plans for instance, it's good to be more mindful of when, why and with whom you share them. It also tricks your brain in feeling it has achieved the plan (a bit) already, could serve as a crutch for validation, or distract you from steps to take now instead of future hypotheticals.

I was offered to train on the machines i needed to learn, for a couple hours every week. I made the _stupid_ mistake of telling my partner. Now its week 5. Ive trained on the machines twice for a total of 3 hours. Why? Because the day we train is the day i have work. 12 to 10, and i was told to come in at 9. My partner, applied for the same job and has been showing up at 7am every week, and since its his day off he can stay all day. Since he gets there so early, i cant use the machine i need to learn and get sent home. Im almost certainly not going to get the job now with no training, and he even told me he doesnt even care if he gets it or not, he just doesnt want to be a janitor anymore.

For the record, Marcus Aurelius never explicitly said, 'don't tell other people your plans,' nor has any Stoic philosopher made such a statement. However, one could argue that this sentiment is inferred from other Stoic themes and writings, which can be summed up as 'talk is cheap.' In essence, Stoicism encourages individuals to act ('walk the walk') rather than merely speak about intentions ('talk the talk'). This video seems to focus more on AI-generated images, an AI script, and an AI voice, potentially designed for clickbait by someone possibly more interested in capitalizing on KZbin ads than sharing genuine wisdom. However, it's worth noting that some psychological studies have shown it's not beneficial to share one's plans or goals publicly. This is because doing so might give individuals a false sense of achievement, thus reducing their motivation to follow through. In short, it's better to act on one's intentions quietly than to boast about them. However, there are exceptions, such as politicians, fundraisers, shareholder meetings, and team huddles, where sharing plans can motivate and inspire. In such cases, statements should be aspirational and ambitious yet grounded in definite optimism. This means expressing what one aims to achieve, how it will be done, and the immediate steps toward that goal.

At the beginning of the video, I noticed the obvious AI art but didn't think much of it. It was half way through when I began noticing the AI build up in paragraphs, and shortly after noticed pronunciation that was off. Didn't know AI voice was this developed lol. While AI generated texts may hold aggregated wisdom and the examples and metaphores it provides us with are solid, I would rather consume more authentic media of our great minds.

Whereas for 2 years only a couple close friends knew what I was doing and I was way more motivated to just work behind the scenes and shock people with success that seemed like it came out of nowhere. We're all different. People knowing specifics about what I'm doing and what my goals are doesn't keep me motivated. I'd say the beginning was a little too repetitive in driving the point, I would have liked you to be a little more dynamic in how you reintroduce your points because I'm really interested in what else you'd say about it but I'd say well done! I'm really happy you brought it back to stoic virtues and made it applicable towards them as every decision should be guided through virtue. It reminds me that I didn't exercise courage properly. I always try to keep my day meaningfully busy but that has scared me into wanting to explore other hobbies, that it'll get in the way of it. This video helped me realize it was me putting myself down and putting expectations upon myself. The expectation that if I don't successfully be consistent and it gets in the way of my daily life I'd feel stressed. It's okay that it doesn't work and we should adapt and as this video states it's not about the expectation of what you want the idea to be but the intention and journey of why. To me I want to explore my creativity to the fullest so I can have more fun in life. It reminds me that intention is true freedom, not the result. Thank you for the video!

These advices are great but I feel unless the person makes the mistakes, they won't truly understand their value. It becomes just some rule or discipline in their lives which can be confining. If you make the mistakes and realize properly, it is freeing.

Hiding your plans creates stress, particularly if you're constantly overthinking what you can reveal, who and how you can trust. If you are an open book about your plans with anybody you talk to, it's actually a big relief to not spend so much energy hiding yourself and being paranoid. The right people will also appreciate your openness.
