This is the first Henry Cavill interview I have seen where the interviewer didn't make him uncomfortable. So many interviewers are so focused on his physical atributes that they forget that for Henry, the CHARACTER is the big picture. He's well-read, intelligent, has deep and well-loved hobbies, and is absolutely chuffed to talk about them. Yet interviewers, especially female ones, seem to always creep on him, which makes him visibly uncomfortable. WELL DONE THIS GUY.

'I am incredibly fond of this character. And I will fight tooth and nail for him and to do him justice.' His determination and the respect for the original character is unparalleled. And now he is gone for good. Imagine the atrocities and the butchery that the show-runner and the writers must have committed to the story that caused him to step down from this role, despite his deep devotion to the books and the original character.

For anyone wondering about the books Henry was recommending: 1. Anything by Raymond E. Feist - a massive world with all sorts of interconnecting stories and storylines; that’s a really fun one to get into because then you’ve got years of reading. 2. Anything by David Gemmell - some interconnected worlds, but more separated. 3. Anything by Brandon Sanderson - an incredible job with „The Stormlight Archive”; for people looking for a good read out there with some beautiful messaging as well and an entirely unique fantasy world. 4. @@henrycavill8387 I assume this is a fake account but I actually don't care. I was watching some of his interviews, I'm about the same age as him and grew up in Northern Ireland. Attending school in Belfast I was by far the geekyist person there and shared a lot of the same passions and hobbies as Henry, but I was also bullied terribly for them. It left me being insular about my passions, I would try to hide all the sci-fi I would watch and read because of how harshly I was judged. As I became an adult it took time (though studying physics at uni helped me open up), but I was able to relax about these things. Even as a student I felt some weird shame and guilt probably because of all the bullying it entailed. I love the fact that the zeitgeist has moved on such that people actually appreciate these hobbies, find them interesting and show respect. In my thirties I can feel safe to chat about being addicted to Populous etc. Hearing Henry talk about how he used to shy away from talking about Warhammer but now feels comfortable was heart-warming to hear as I feel like I went through that same experience.

Cavill spoke of the late, great David Gemmell. He is a relatively unknown in the mainstream fantasy world, but perhaps the greatest heroic fantasy author of all time. I'm tremendously thankful that Cavill has introduced potentially millions to this man's work. You're doing yourself a huge disservice by missing out on Gemmell's works and it's a shame he doesn't get more notice by the fantasy community. It's likely most don't know of him. Go buy his Drenai Saga--all of it. Right now.

So, as a newbie to this author’s work, would you have a recommendation as to what to start with? Will I be overwhelmed with too many characters/plot lines/lineages to absorb what’s happening? I hate having to take notes when I read. Hopefully you see this-and thanks!
@noiceman
@noiceman 2 жыл бұрын
@@to1620 I would start with Legend. Definitely read the series in publication order. It has been my experience that Gemmell's world has more meaning and impact when you move back and forth in the timeline. After reading the first three books, take a break and read the John Shannow/Jerusalem Man series for a palate-cleanser. It's basically a western/fantasy/sci-fi trilogy. It was my first introduction to Gemmell's work. In fact, according to Gemmell, all of his books exist in the same universe, so there's that. Also, you won't need to take notes at all. I'm ecstatic that you've decided to read DG. Best of luck!

Listened to Blake Arthur Peels series Fall of Radiance last month. It's not Sanderson by any means but still nice if you can tolerate that it has a bit more romance and isn't as complex. Same narrator as the Sanderson books for audiobook listeners that helps too I guess haha. Now listening to the second book of the Alex Verus series. Totally agree - would love to see Henry's response to it - and also give him a voice in Season 2

Tweet from Josh Horowitz quote tweeting the announcement of this interview’s release: “Funny story: spent some time with Mr. Cavill last week. We exchanged a bunch of geeky tv/film recommendations. He ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommended ARCANE. So methinks your recommendation worked, Ali!”

When they announced him as Geralt, I was skeptical. I read the books and played the games as a teenager and couldn't think of "Superman" in that role but he honestly has done a fantastic job. Couldn't picture anyone else doing as well in the role as he has.

I would love for them to bring back a swordfighting scene as beautifully choreographed as the one in Blaviken. It was so brilliant and we haven't really seen a fight scene since that really shows off Geralt's expertise the way that did. Hope they bring back more in future episodes. Also PLEASE have him say "wind's howling" at some point. I would absolutely dieeeeeeee

Ali you were born for this. I love your interviews and this was the best decision you’ve ever made. You’re so detailed, so respectful and you hit the spot with your questions. From an audience perspective your questions are so refreshing.

What an excellent interview. As a fellow nerd it brings me joy to watch two of my brethren geek it out without fear
