A lot of stupidity in the comments. I've worked the oilfields and electrical industry my entire life. We winch up a lot more weight than a measley pickup. We do not load up the winch with a 1000 lbs everytime we spool it back up. Put on a glove, pull the rope tight, and guide it left to right, then back over itself right to left. It's not rocket science. This is the same with 3/8 vehicle line or 1.5" bull rope on 10 hp tugger. These kids throw on a spacer lift and a winch and think they're recovery gurus...

Funny how a digger Derek line truck has a 25lb hook for 1” dyneema and it’s rated to pick 30k straight up. Yet just 25lbs of tension goes back in full length every time… from ground to pulling back in all 3 stages 70’ up and 70’ down… 140’ of line, 25lb ball seems to be more than enough to not kink up after lifting 25k close and almost full drum. like you said gurus. Hand hold it is good enough for any truck winch. Or atv etc.

The idea of tensioning the first half of the cable is to prepare it for actual pulling of the vehicle - you have not done this. Dragging a 10kg? wheel along the ground hardly mimics dragging a 1800kg 4wd in a recovery situation. You may as well have left it how it was. Tension on the rope was the point, and you applied bugger all.

Last 8 or 9 ft does not need to be tensioned because you always will use that much before connecting the line to anything.

Hi mate, I don’t want to add to the collection of negative comments on here but I feel I should advise you to spool in from the bottom of the drum (I think your winch may be installed upside down, easily fixed by just rotating your clutch lever). The reason being is your auto drum brake most likely won’t work in that direction (and that’s very dangerous). Don’t be deterred to make other vids.

So my winch is mounted upside down and when I spoke To someone they had mentioned that won’t make a difference in operation… this is my first atv/winch so I’m just curious is that what you are referring to !? Appreciate it

@@SETTAPERFORMANCE Sorry, my original post was obscure. A winch does not know or care how it is mounted. What I mean by that is if you attached a winch to a wall vertically, horizontally, up side down or even on a 45degree angle it won't make any difference to operation. On my N80 hilux I had to mount it 'up side down' so that the rope spooled from the top and lined up directly with the hole (fairlead or rollers, in my case rollers). I just needed to rotate the clutch so that the free spool was on top. My winch operates perfectly because it is in line. If it spooled from the bottom it would pull the vehicle nose down (via the bottom roller) into the object you are trying to get up and over. This would create enormous pressure on the rope and most likely snap it.

You might want to respool it so it pulls from the bottom of the drum.

@@T.A.G it’s not about the direction the drum is rolling. It’s how you feed the tail end of the rope in before securing it to the winch. The end of the rope goes in below the drum first. Then up behind the drum, and then screw it in place. Now you can roll it in properly.

He’s got it right for his application. The brake only works in one direction as there is no need to brake the drum on the unloaded side. The only option would be to flip the whole winch over which might not fit for his setup.

Sorry dude, but you made it wrong! First of all you should rolling rope in oposite direction on the dram, it must be under the dram. Maby you or someone in shop conected power wire in wrong way. Second thing is? the spare weel is to light to make correct preload. Better idea is to conect rope to anchor point and pooling the car evan with parking brake with 50 percent pull on.

Love your videos mate I have a 2016 pajero sport and about to fit a piak elite 3 loop (the new one with recessed lamps). What winch are you using?? Have been told that the piak bars are winch specific as in there is not to much space. Im looking into a VRS winch. Any pics of your control box mounting??

Your initial problem was caused by spooling the rope in without proper load on it. Then you made a video about it but still didn’t use proper load! You need minimum 1000 lbs on the other end. What you did is better than no load at all.. but you’re still going to pinch your line

I don't know about your part of the world but here in Texas we have nasty little burrs we call 'stickers' and you only need to get jabbed by one once to know you don't want a repeat!

It wasnt as bad as people make it out to be and your wench will operate ok. Personally I tensioner mine by pulling my riding lawnmower up an incline. You just want to eliminate those very loose areas where it could spool and birds nest on you and I think you did that. Dont listen to the peanut gallery.

Exactly. Obviously the more load the better. But you just need tension to stop the rope pulling under itself like it already had haha. However. My winch does need to come out and be respooled again. So I will be looking at winch direction again in the future

All that dirt and dust on your synthetic line is not good for it and your fairlead …it damages the micro fibers and scratches up your fairlead which in turn reduces the life of the rope…

Yeah. I make sure every time I ever winch a car the rope never touches any dirt or mud at all. I only winch cars on tarmac in dust free environments for this exact reason :)
