I didn't buy the harbor freight pump for my travel trailer, had it years before, which I bought for my mountain bike and my truck. Never had a problem with it and I've used it dozens of times and have owned it for at least 5-6 years.

We have a 2021 3500HD Silverado and we changed from Tire Minder (with that separate monitor screen) to the GMC tire monitors that go inside the tire like we have in the truck. I can now monitor the Fifth Wheel tires in my truck as part off the overall trailer monitoring system. I also have a boat and use it on that trailer too. I can see everything on the dash monitor and it will alert if pressure or temperature changes too much. So if you have a newer GMC truck, check this out.

The first item I put in a "12 Volt compressor" 17 cubic ft french door refrigerator, and sold the residential refrigerator. Next 1260 watts of solar panels, and an 2 more agm batteries. I can travel anywhere with the refrigerator/freezer on all the time. Propane is only used for heat hot water and the stove. On my AC I just added a couple of more start Capacitors in line. They charge up and helps with the AC start also.

Bought a cheap air compressor and it self-destructed the very first time I used it. Next bought a Vaiar and have used it for probably over 10 years with no issues. (Having to drive a slowly leaking tire over 200 miles in the Yukon to the next available air pump/gas station/mechanic convinced me of the need for a reliable air pump in the RV)

Another must have in my opinion (that we found out through John and Mercedes) is our Power Watchdog surge protector. If you can afford it, you won't be sorry! One of the best features is that it connects with your phone and tells you how many amps you are pulling at any given time which is huge if you have an older RV (30 amp 1996) like us that doesn't come equipped with a monitor. It is so handy to be able to run your equipment and see if you are close to popping a breaker. Couple that with some Soft Starts on your AC units and you will be good to go!

So true about Harbor Freight. My cousin was a manager of a Harbor Freight store, and he told me that the hand tools like wrenches would probably work when you needed them but anything that plugs in is junk. Also, the TST is imperative!! Blow outs are one of the most common causes of flipping a rig or just destroying a rim. Either way, your screwed on the road. For me, the TST is a MUST HAVE even for my domestic van. Also, I carry a compressor and a professional tire plug kit in my vehicles. It isn't a great idea to plug a tire, but it will get you where you need to go.

I’ve bought a couple electronic things from HF. A heat gun on sale for like $10 and a Grindr. I was happy with both. And I only needed to use them once to make them worth buying. The heat gun I’ve used on multiple projects and it works great. I haven’t used it enough to say to much about it, but I was able to cut my double wall wood stove pipe with it. I think if it’s for the occasional DIY and kind of a specialty tool they can be worth it. But for heavy use things I use DeWalt for drills, saws, etc. And my chop saw is a Kobalt from Lowe’s that has worked well for me.
@WilliamHearnTOEFL_Tutor2 жыл бұрын
@@zanesutherland406 True enough. One time use or very light duty jobs are O.K. for HF electric tools. Still, there is a relatively high probability of an out-of-box failure of anything with a cord and plug on it. I bought a grinder once to cut the floor out of a van. It cut about 18" of the floor and the switch caught fire. So, it also depends on what your one-time use is.

I also recommend a good digital tire gauge. You should check your tires when they are cold. The dial on the pump is only approximate. Mine is off 4 or 5 pounds low so I fill the tires to about 5 pounds over based on the pump dial and fine tune it with the digital gauge. Also, don't forget to check the tires on the tow vehicle tires and your spare tires.

I have used a RIOBI Battery air compressor for years now. Battery makes it portable, but it takes forever to get something filled up. If you only need to add 10 or 20 psi - it is great. Fill the tire from zero and you will go through two complete batteries. So far, that has not been a problem.

I have had TST tire monitors for my 28' travel trailer since 2014 and they're great. I have several recommendations based on our experience. 1. Make sure you have metal tire stems installed that won't flex. The monitor is on the end and creates momentum and will break rubber stems and if that happens the sending unit is gone with it! A friend had that happen. 2. About 12 months after we bought the system, we had problems with tires dropping out or not registering. We changed the sending unit's batteries and seals and they worked fine for the next 3 years. Keep spare batteries and seals on hand and plan to change them every 2-3 years. You will need the removal tool and a mini-phillips screwdriver. the seals are a tiny "O" rings available from the manufacturer. Air pump tip: if the hose won't reach. Use jumper cables as an extension cord to extend the 12v leads, just clamp the loose end positive onto the insulation on the negative cable so they won't short out. I can reach the rear tires on either side of my 28' TT from the battery in the truck while hooked up.

I have both the SoftStart and the Viair in/on my rig. I did not have a great experience with customer service from SoftStart, but had a friend who is an electrician install it for me to get me up and over the learning curve. I LOVE this product!! In campgrounds where the power is overwhelmed in the middle of the Summer/everybody’s trying to run their ACs, TVs, laptops, etc., etc., my SoftStart means I’m able to get my AC started with a “softer” draw from the grid. The Viair has proven essential. So many times I’ve stopped at stations for air only to find their pumps are only equipped for tires standard on everyday passenger vehicles. My tires need 75-80psi, so the lower pressure max won’t meet my need. Thank goodness I’ve had the Viair on board. It works like a dream. I’m not full-time, so I use a combo of the large sediment and smaller pathogen/chemical Clear2O water filters. Then, I use a Berkey for drinking and cooking. These are super easy to find and reliable. The other things I think are absolute Must-Haves, that you didn’t mention, are: 1) a diagnostic, surge protector; and 2) a water pressure regulator.

Look into a air bag tire jack. Lifts your rig without pumping a jack handle. Have one in each vehicle with a 110v compressor, 110v impact wrench and 1500w inverter. So easy.
@OOMAN2 жыл бұрын
I got tired of burning up $100+ 12v compressors, so I put a 120v/200psi Rigid 4.5gal. "bullet" compressor in one of the basement compartments (toy hauler), with a hose reel that reaches all tires on the truck & trailer while hooked up. I run the TireMinder A1A system. Had a couple problems with the tire sending units, but they made it right with no problem. Happy with that system. EVERYONE pulling a trailer needs to have a TPMS system. One avoided tire failure can pay for the TPMS system in damage saved. My unit came with Goodyear Endurance tires, which have been great, but I will be switching to a stiffer sidewall TransEagle All-Steel tire when it comes time to change them. I had those on my last 5th wheel camper, run them on my utility trailers, and they are great. I need to look into that Clear Source system, thanks!
@rvb80932 жыл бұрын
Another tool you should have is a click-type Torque Wrench. I own a couple of expensive ones but carry a Harbor Freight Torque Wrench. I compared it to my "good" ones and it read right on so I carry it. If it gets stolen I'm only out $25 not $200. I check my lug nuts before I start each trip and again every couple of days on the road. I was at a rally where a dealer of a very expensive line of trailers brought a new one out for display. It was about 100 miles from the dealer and they lost a wheel and damaged the side on the way there. The driver checked and 2 of the other wheels had loose lug nuts. Not good advertising for the prep from that dealer. Wheels flex while being driven, lugs can loosen and if loose enough the studs will shear off!

Thank you so much for making a video regarding products that one must have and products that are no good. That's why I don't buy things at harbor freight. They only last a short time and they always break. I just wanted to say about insurance I remember I got in a very bad accident in my motorhome. Some 17-year-old girl was texting and I'm going 40 miles an hour with the traffic down the highway. She made a left hand turn right in front of me. Anyways when AAA who I had RV insurance with came out to appraise the vehicles damage it was deemed It was Totaled. But they looked around and they said do you live in this and I said yes I do, I told them that when I was insured. The adjuster said we don't Ensure full timers. I was very blessed because they over rode their policy and then after that was all said and done I had to go out and get insurance for full time RVing.. This is to help anyone that's getting insurance to make sure that they ask will this coverage cover me living in my RV full time. But it's so cool to know that you guys have insurance for people to get through you. I cannot tell you how excited and stoked I am to be watching your channel every time you do an upload. Don't ask me why I was subscribed and never watched the videos till recently. now I can't get enough of you two wonderfully crazy people. As I told you before I'm off the road after becoming disabled. It'ss just me and my service dog and we park at my mechanics parking lot we have water electric and a dump and I only pay $130 a month in California which is absolutely unheard of. I just wanted to say after motorhoming and full-timing for 20 years it feels really good to NOT be traveling. There does come that time at least it did in my life where getting off the road was a pleasure. I love you guys, can't wait to your next video. God bless you and much love to you and your family.

Yeeees - the temperature feature of the TPMS! This was very important to us too, but we're using a different model that's embedded in the wheels (like vehicles have). Agreed on the Clear Source - bought it last year, stayed in many campgrounds, then upon storing the filter, we noticed there was rust in the first cartridge! So glad we had that system and didn't have that flowing through our plumbing. And the GasStop - we've been procrastinating on this, but now is the time. We'll check it out through your store along with a couple other items. Great video - it's awesome to get trusted recommendations!

We also bleed the propane lines after turning the tanks off before we start traveling. To do this, we turn on the stove burners until about 5 seconds after the flames go out. We will never travel with the propane on, never. We have a two-way fridge, but it will stay cold for several hours. If we were to travel for more than 4 hours, we will use ice chests or just go shopping when we reach our destination. The danger of traveling with the propane on just to run the fridge isn't worth it to us.

You missed a big thing on the propane. A lot of states do not allow you to travel with your propane tanks on at all. Make sure your propane tanks are turned off to begin with. Harbor freight is good for throw away tools to get buy. A tool set for your trailer harbor freight works. If your going to pull out an engine on a bus or an airplane, do not use harbor freight.

Those curved levelers fall apart the very 1st time! As a chock it's fine. That's it! I bought a Goodyear 135 psi from HF. I trust Goodyear. HF? Ehh... Have used it 6 times.

She's right with the water filter. But lol most pipes in people's homes have old pipes. So when they get RVs all the sudden we want the best water.

The most useless thing I bought? When I was towing a travel trailer (I have a camper van now) I bought X-Chocks to stabilize the trailer. As a solo traveler they weren't necessary since there was no one else walking around the trailer. I sold 'em.

I love my X-Chocks! It was worth it for me. Keeps the caravan from moving as much.

Tip for Mercedes. Your feet hurt on a rocky surface? Lose the Nike's ....... they're comfortable in the store, but junk under real conditions. They have no support. Try Sketchers or some lightweight Columbia hiking shoes. Thanks for all you do. Another great video !

Ive always been the mind set of "buy cheap, buy twice" and we've bought a lot of things for our rv but fortunately we've watched video's like this so we avoid the junk lol. We bought a Viair last year because you "aint" filling a G rated tire with a Harbor Freight air pump. One thing I didnt see is (and this is for the newbies) is a surge protector, we've had a Progressive Industries since our first rv 6 years ago (using the same one). And yes! those little blue pills (camp co) water filters are a waste of money. So many people buy these things on the cheap thinking they'll never have to use it.

Every 10°F temperature change caused about a 2psi tire change. So you just started out at 75F and ended at 45F...guess what? Your tires need air!
