Sorry to take so long to respond - ill health and deadlines! Hi, James. Sorry about your leg - I've been lucky in that regard, although I don't recommend maculopathy either. Monthly injections are not pleasant. Still, i feel fortunate not to have suffered your problems. Do take up writing again. If the worst comes to the worst, I'll keep an eye on the papers and wait to get inspiration from "author murdered his editor with a prosthetic leg". I don't know I could kill an editor with a replaced eyeball ... but there could be a story there, you never know! Seriously, take care of yourself and all best wishes.

As you are talking about advances I thought this might be an appropriate time to ask you about how much you get from each type of book that you sell. I’m not interested in exact amounts only which format of books get the most from. I was looking to purchase your latest book from Amazon and I can get it in either paperback or kindle. As I don’t have a format preference I’d like to purchase the format that you get the most money from. Which format should I buy and if you feel especially giving of information what the difference is in a %. I really enjoy your videos especially the ones with your new cohost.

Because publishers keep changing the way that they charge for ebooks, for example. Trying to keep up with their pricing strategy is next to impossible. The only thing that is certain is that if you buy One Last Dance Before I Die, I'll earn more - because it's self-published on Amazon as Kindle or paperback! It's something I'm going to have to make a video about soon, I think. Thanks!

Oh, when I had a puppy, it was horrible. Originally I was against the addition of another family member. But who woke up at 4:30 am to train the puppy? Who went out at Midnight fo the same purpose. When home during the day, who did the other walks? Even after puppy training the morning and midnight runs continued, thought my steele against the demon gradually subsided. But it required a new coffee table with the legs of the original became a teething ring. As you have gone through this agonizing time of their life before, has it gotten any better? Some of my family have seen my rants on paper and think it may be worth pursuing a manuscript. I find your comments very telling and will give it some thought before going on with this "pie in the sky" idea.

It's now nearly midnight, and I'm about to take the monster pup up the road again so we don't have an "accident" over night. Eight months old, and she's still a terror. The worst thief I've ever had (she's my 4th Bernese), easily the most destructive, with architrave, floor panels and various other things chewed - and would I give her up? No chance. She's adorable. Even when muddy. Let me know if you have any questions on writing, and I'll try to help with advice if I can. Best of luck!

what got you into being an author?

Sorry to take so long to respond - ill health and deadlines! Hmm - I had two great jobs that paid well - Wordplex Information Systems and Wang Laboratories. Those two between them lasted 9 years. I worked for Bluebird Software for another year. But in my 13 years as a computer salesman, I racked up 13 jobs. Every firm I worked for went bust, which was more than a little disconcerting. I didn't want to sell Bic Biros, so hunted for something else to do. I knew I loved reading, so gave myself six months to write a book and get a publisher interested, In six months I had three books, a contract, and I've been broke ever since!

From the outside view, we may identify successful writers, or other creative types, by media profile or how many books they have written. But the sad truth is the various layers of marketing take their pound of flesh and leave little to the source. With giants like A--- taking all the profits and giving little back, becoming rich is about as likely as winning the lottery. I have heard career artists say that they are making less now than 10 or 20 years ago. One might think that after 50 books the publisher might make it easier for you. But you can easily be replaced by the next big thing that comes along. I hope a few pounds now and then from YT helps. Perhaps there is something to having a regular job where you receive a payslip every Thursday.

Sorry to take so long to respond - ill health and deadlines! Ah, a regular job with regular pay ... I wish! I don't regret writing. It's allowed me to spend much more time with the children than I'd otherwise have been able; it's also allowed me to have the dogs I've wanted - mostly. But it is tough, and as a personal note, I would never advise anyone to take up writing full time now. As a hobby, as a pleasant pastime, maybe, but as a full time job, definitely not. It's too poorly paid and insecure.
