This is how history should be taught! Yes, I too have read the historical factors relevant to Princess Dona Catherina, Due to her name and several marriages I felt she had a loose character like Queen Anula. But today I changed my mind, She must have been a pillar of strength to King Wimaladharama Sooriya & an excellent companion to King Senarath. But you have left one important life change which is her connection and contribution to Buddhism. Explaining and teaching, history is not a subject that everyone can do, it should be fact-based and linked directly to the past through the use of supporting evidence. You my dear Sir have not only the knowledge but also aptitude to get into the hearts and minds of the listeners. You are also lucky or should I say we too are lucky instead to have have your friend to intrupt and bring up certain issues that need clarification.

Totally agree with you. Dona Catherina suffered from her childhood to her death. I have the Original deeds of her Welimnnathota estate and Golahala deeds from what I inherit from my maternal side. But she is related to me from my paternal side. Dona Catherina is my Mee Muththmma and she is my Role Model.

THANKS PROFFESOR FOR EDUCATING US ABOUT THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY.
We know Queen Kusumasana was in various cities in Sri Lanka like Trincomalie and Mannar and Kandy, Could you please explain us where she was born and where was she passed away. I have heard that she was passed away close to present day Kegalle. Has anyone established the location of her grave?, any ruines?. Grave of Jajasinghe 1 was also doubtfull as it was not confirmed.
Sri Lankans should remember that during the reign of king Senerath there were some major event suchs as the Sinhalese victory at the Battle of Randeniwela, the last use of naval power by a Sinhala king with the assistance of Meegamuwe Rala (i.e. attack on Portuguese ports by Sinhala war ships/boasts) and the rebellions of Kuruwita Rala.
Dr. Somadeva didn't mention about the age of King Wimaladharmasuriya when he died? though said he was "old". Appreciate an answer at the next episode pl.

Fernão de Queiroz was said to be born in 1617 and completed this manuscript that you are referring to on 1687 in India. It is neither contemporary nor evidence based. This kind of claim can be believed at least if documented by eye-witness or contemporary reports. Reports of Spilbergen written in 1602 after meeting king Vimaladharma Soorya by himself is far more reliable than this, which details the royal family, bur does not say anything about such incident.

Although the it's quite correct that the Battle of Danture was indeed a great defeat for the Portuguese, it's historically inaccurate to claim that the Portuguese Empire declined following that battle. In fact it expanded until at least the early 1800's when they gained control of places such as Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, Goa and East Timor. Although as Sri Lankans, we should be proud of our colorful history, we should avoid pampori and wanse kabal gaema...

Yes. Even after the Battle of Danture they conquered Jaffna and came close to capture Kandy again in 1602. Even if Vimaladharmasūriya I successfully defended again, he pleaded from Goa to become a vassal. After the death of Vimaladharmasūriya I, Azevedo invaded Kandy and Kandy became a vassal for some time.

@@maddagedonroshan970 Thank you very much for providing the primary sources. I should have been clearer about the information I am seeking references for. They are… 1. Her (Soorya adasin’s) husband manage to escape 2. Senerat and Suriya adasin’s daughter’s name was “Lanka adasin” (I don’t see the name as Lanka adasin in either of those documents you referred. 3. Lanka Adasin who was born to Suriya was coronated as King Deva Rajasinghe's Queen on Rajasinghe the Second's coronation. First if we discuss “Expedition to Uva”, Pages 36-37, mention Vijayapala’s and Kumarasinha’s consorts Jaffna princesses, (one of them was the legitimate king of Jaffna who was killed by Sangili) and their sob story. 42 Princess of Candea mentioned about her beauty without a name “In the case of some, with the exception of that Lady of the tears and the Princess of Candea”. I assume either this must be Senarat’s daughter or the consort of Rajasinha. 54 Queen is mentioned and SGP provides a footnote saying “This is the Kings stepdaughter, and niece, namely the daughter of his brother (sic) Vimala Dharma Suriya and Dona Catherina. After the death of Dona Catherina, Senarat took his two stepdaughters as queens. The elder name Soorya Maha Adasin (Biker Tratados, I., 224) died in 1617. It is the other Antan-adassin that was queen now.” Also it is said that queensays she is 30. As Hantana adasin was born after Spilbergen’s 1602 visit and De Weer’s visits in 1603 it is possible that she was around 26-27. Also, on page 54 it is mentioned all three wives of the princes’ (or one could be simply Senarat’s daughter only and not the wife of Rajasinha as he was around 17 by then), “Queen and the Princesses of Candea, Huua, and Mathale, who were all there, with forty dozen Amazons.” It is also mentioned that “she (Hantana Adasin) never bore children.” Also, on page 55 it is mentioned that “Her highness (Queen Hantana Adasin) had none (jewels), either because, as some say, she greatly regretted the death of Constantino de Saa, as there had been some dealings between them and she had been resolved to leave the Court of her husband, not only because he had been the husband of her mother Dona Catherina, but also because he took her to wife by force, and had killed for the purpose of that marriage a certain Prince, a relative of hers, to whom she had been espoused for four years to her so great satisfaction…”. Also, the fact that Hantana adasin wrote Portuguese poems. Page 55-56 discuss her education as well as Dona Catherina’s by stating “Father Friar Francisco Negrao, Religious of the Observance and Chronicler of the same order, was nine years in Candea teaching her and the Princes Latin and Italian, and she was moreover a daughter of King Dom Joao by Queen Dona Caterina, the former educated in the [College of the] Kings and the latter in Manar, where one may suppose, they educated her in the best style.” Though a princess and the queen are mentioned in page 59 during the year of 1930-1931 when prince Maha Hastana or Rajasinha was still young no name is mentioned there. I assume as Senarath married Soorya adasin after queen Dona Catharina’s death in 1613, by this time (i.e. 1631) the princess should be around 17 years old and capable of strangling her father. Also, it is mentioned “madness of his children”. How many children were there? It is not clear to me the exact reason (execution of Dom Francisco?) of this quarrel too. On page 60 it is mentioned of, “He (a Prince of Uva)… did not avail him to escape miserable death, for the Princess, hearing of his journey managed in such a way as to order him to be poisoned a Vilasem, and without confession [he died], with sufficient indications of the cause of his death, which I do not know whether he deserved, though felt I know it was, and we buried him at the foot of a tree…. that Dom Francisco was her relative and a most handsome person, in face and proportions, with natural and acquired parts enough to make his very enemies mourn, his unhappy death.” Who is this Fransisco? Page 67 states that “their Highnesses the Prince and the Princess (who was also there) embraced each other and began to sing, the one a treble, the other tenor, which it was a pleasure to hear… though His Highness went with the intention of becoming a Christian, this holy purpose did not prevent him from visiting the ruins of the temple of god Catragamma.”. Is this prince of Uva Kumarasinha and his consort?

@@ChiranWindsor Not only in Lineage of Emeprors , but she is mentioned in Baldeus's work too. The reason why she was selected for the crown prince was to get a more hereditary right for him, though he was the youngest.

@@maddagedonroshan970 Your last comment highlights the need for references on three additional points. 1. Lanka Adasin's mother, Sooriya Adasin, passed away during giving birth to Lanka. 2. The princesses of Jaffna were named Dona Isabela and Dona Maria, while King Sangili Pandara's queen was named Ganga, and the first two marrying K and V respectively. 3. Lanka Adasin married Francisco Baretto, who was the son of Antonio Baretto.
Dear Sir, As per my understanding, Wimladharmasooriya 1st was killed by the Senarath. Senarath and Rjasingha 11 are the brutal kings in our history....
